US soundtrack albums until maybe the late 1970s or early 1980s generally were re-recordings. So someone who is into 1960s and 70s US scores almost always experiences re-recordings.

Yeah but most of the releases that have had the album as a 'bonus' aren't those (and a lot of the ones that are, the OST tends to be in mono and I'm not interested in it in the first place). And I'm of the opposite opinion of those anyway, if they are are actually full re-recordings then I completely welcome them.

Most of the time I could careless if the original album is present with an expanded/complete release. Unless there were really unique tracks to the OST IE: Star Trek Insurrection with the track "Children's Story". As we know the album version of "Children's Story" was longer than the film version.

"If" is the key word. For every "Our Man Flint," there is a "Charade." And everything in between.

In some cases the original OST edit of a soundtrack album is worthy to be included because it was well made and a good but significantly different representation of a film score for pure listening purposes. At other times, it seems superfluous to include an original album sequence as bonus, especially when it is essentially the same music, just fewer cues. However, they never "bother" me; if they are included, great.

In some cases, I think the album edit is a tremendously important inclusion. E.T. - The Extra Terrestrial is such a case and a good example. While I was very happy to have the expanded E.T. score, since the original OST edit shortchanged a lot of the darker material of the score, the OST edit had nevertheless a grandiose musical flow and is a tremendous listening experience on its own. On the other hand, the OST sequence of Jerry Goldsmith's Alien is not even anywhere near as interesting to listen to as is its complete form as on the Intrada release.
