Awful! Just awful! The theme's new rendition sounds like a simple mock-up of something undeveloped and doesn't even call your attention to something interesting worth seeing.

While I liked the idea of Jodie Whittaker as the Doctor, the music (if the featured nonsense could be called as such) is unbearable and pretty much what I was presuming it will be after the name of the composer was announced.

Sorry to say it, but for me, the Dr. Who series have ended after the departure of the mighty Murray Gold. I understand that he can't carry on the torch forever, but anyway, his legacy for this series is so sublime.

Go back and watch the first NuWho episode with Christopher Eccleston and pay close attention to Murray Gold’s score in that. Would you say that synths drum loop score remotely hinted at the thematic orchestral majesty Gold would be able to achieve later on the show? Did his name somehow initially give you greater excitement than Akinola’s? I too agree this scoring and theme arrangement are disappointing, but maybe you could be a little more patient before swearing off the show altogether...

You might be right, Yavar, in terms of general perception. But from what I remember, the expectations regarding Murray Gold were higher at the beginning (however I might be wrong).

I think you can't compare the first NuWho episode with this one, because then was a new start, while now you have such a legacy established already and supposedly you go further from this.

As a huge fan of the series, this is a major disappointment (in terms of music). Sure you can try a different approach, but now there's no excuse for a worst one. I can't imagine a lower go down.

Very mixing feelings.
From one point of view - DOCTOR him(her)self is cool. Well, maybe bit too Tennant-like, but this is still cool.
From the other - it's probably the first time, when we see THE DOCTOR in 9 min. after the episode starts!
Sorry, but for me it's looks more like any other TV show - long introduction of new characters, etc. with little sci-fi elements.

As for music. I also was disappointed. And I don't know whom to blame for this.
We got music, based on it screenplay. Let's remember "Rose"? We got that great opening, 'cause the opening scene had such drive. Same with the first 11th Doctor episode.
And here we have "slow" episode, so it's not strange that music is slow.

Maybe next episodes will be better, but right now I think that I'll not buy Series 11 soundtrack, if it ever will see the light.

First off, I'm not onboard with the gender change, but it doesn't stop me from (I hope) being objective about the actual episodes and the music.

Underwhelming is what I'll say about both the episode and Ms Whittaker for the same reasons as the other critics on here.

I don't mind at all that they've got more minimalist in the scoring. Many disliked the Hollywood style blockbuster sounds of Murray Gold. I wasn't one of them. Infact I loved virtually everything he did, especially up to halfway through the first Matt Smith series, plus excellent other peaks such as the sublime Heaven Sent. But he's been doing for a long time, and a change here is fair enough.

But even he fell foul of the famous Ron Grained eventually. The last couple have been poor, with the last one for Peter Capaldi being excruciating, with that whiney melody line. I liked his first which is still the closest to the original, which uses the Derbyshire recording much better than the new one. The 'rock' one for the Catherine Tate series was pretty cool, and finally the first Matt Smith one with it's original intro grew on me to the same level as these despite hating it on first hearing.

This latest though is in line with the last two. Actually it reminds me of the one David Arnold did for the Paul McGann Big Finish audio series releases. All mumbled percussion and no drive and impact.

I liked it. It was solid. And that's what I wanted it to be: Solid. It was a really good introduction to Doctor Who. A terrific jumping on point. And for a "Doctor's First Episode" it had a lot of The Doctor in it! There has a been a tradition of introducing a new Doctor either very sparingly (Tennant, Pertwee, Capaldi) and / or not at full speed (Davison / Colin Baker / Capaldi). Tom Baker got through that nonsense in ten minutes.

I thought Whittaker was a delight. That wasn't surprising. Not sure where the Tennant comparisons are coming from. She wasn't nearly as "swashbuckling" as he was.

The music was very sparing, but there were several moments where it took closer to center stage and I loved them. I gotta admit that I adored that Akinola actually introduced the Doctor with the Doctor Who theme! Not having opening titles just about made me have a seizure, but I admit it was a good idea.

THE THEME: It's very similar to Gold's first season in that it is built on Delia Derbyshire's recording. (Gold was going to use and even more classic version of the theme, but he didn't feel it fit the episode scoring.) The bass almost sounds like either Colin Baker's second season or David Arnold's version. And I love both of those, so, win!

It's kind of funny that for such a "warm" Doctor that they went back to a very mysterious version of the theme.

Agree 100%.
It made the entire episode feel like a "cold open" and gave it a perfect sense of tension. "Where the f is the theme?" Eventually I figured out what was going on and when it finally showed up realized it was a subtly genius move.

I personally much prefer Akinola's new theme for Jodie's Doctor over Gold's last one for Capaldi.

If he maintains the focus on her theme and spreads it out throughout the series? It could be every bit as remembered as any of the other themes.

It's never going to beat Matt Smith's theme (not even close), which not only was the best theme IMO, but I easily rate it higher than even the classic 60s theme.

I don't rate classic WHO as a show anyway, so it's not hard for me to do that. Smith was my Doctor, and as far as I was concerned at the time, Doctor Who never existed before my introduction to him. I never actually knew the show was a reboot at all until nearing the end of Smith's first and fifth season.

When I think Doctor Who theme, I immediately think:

Watched it again with the kids.

The music in the Building the Screwdriver sequence was a highlight. It fits nicely with I Am the Doctor and Am I a Good Man. (Gold's first theme for the Doctor is a fave. Especially the season four version.)

Watching it again when the Doctor is introduced and that bass line plays under it, I grinned like a little boy.

I have high hopes.

FWIW: I'm reserving judgement for now. The opening episode as an episode was okay (but the plot very Predator-y); the introduction of the characters was fine and Whittaker seems good to me.

I didn't really pay attention to the score as the episode was playing, and I CBA to re-watch it.

The theme over the closing credits I'm not too keen on right now. The melody line is fine and reminiscent of early versions (which I approve of) but the rhythm feels clattery and hasty. Perhaps it'll grow on me.

This is the reason why the first two from the Radiophonic Workshop are the best of them all. In both of the above BOTH elements of the theme are well to the fore. They are the most important things, everything else is window dressing however nice they are. The ones since these tend to bury that exciting, almost biting (in the second version) baseline, and for me makes them less exciting.

Obviously that first Delia Derbyshire recording is the real deal. Ahead of it's time and one of the greatest ever electronic music creations. Amended slightly as time went on but there from 1963 to 1980. The second, Peter Howell version I thought back in 1980 sounded like Tomita had been employed! On first listen I both loved it and thought it was sacrilege at the same time. Within a week I loved the drive vibrancy of it.

It will be interesting to see if the new one grows on me, and we certainly need to hear it with the opening titles from next week onwards to see how well it fits.

Those are my favourite versions of the theme for sure. Perhaps that's it – that the rhythm is carried by the bass line (whatever instruments happen to be playing it) rather than some drum-machine-overlay sound.

If I were commissioning a version of the Who theme I'd want old-school electronica to the fore: analog synths, ondes martenot, theremin. Maybe some electric guitar. Swooshy sound effects. Unconventional instruments: glass harmonica? Should be a way to use the blaster beam maybe for the very end.

Everybody has their own opinions, I guess – no surprise that there are so many covers of it out there on t'internet. Have I given a link to the Traffic Experiment version before?

Two episodes into the new season (and doctor), and while the show itself is OK, I'm not terribly impressed with the music so far.

Totally agree. Last night's episode had a solo cello thing going on that Murray Gold could have done in his sleep. Nice though to be fair.

But the theme is very poor. A lot was made out of the fact that Akinola used the original Delia Derbyshire arrangement of it and was added to. Well, so was Murray Gold's first version, and to much better effect. Again, to be fair MG's different versions also used the baseline less and less until it was non-existent. SO WRONG, for me at least. The last one for Peter Capaldi was like a cat being strangled with that baseline sidelined.

The new one sounds like David Arnold's for those audio releases (with Paul McGann) that I don't bother with anyway. All base and no substance.

So glad you posted this - wasn't aware of it and I love it. (But then I'm a softie for just about every version of the theme ever made.)

I wanted to like last night's episode, but it was so dull. The lack of any real focus needs to be rectified and quickly or I'm not going to want to watch this season through to its finale. I fear the same will apply for many other viewers as well at this rate.

Poor Jodie Whittaker. Here she is acting at her best, coming across as genuinely likeable and delightful, but there's just nothing to allow her to truly show off her potential.... not yet anyway. They are also wasting the very expensive and beautiful cinematography on such forgettable material.

The only part of yesterdays episode that was interesting in any way was the excellent reveal of the new Tardis towards the end.

I've made my decision about the companions also. Graham (Bradley Walsh) is surprisingly growing on me. Keep him, ditch the other two. Ryan is okay, but not really companion material and Yazz is so painfully generic and boring she makes Clara Oswald look like Donna Noble.

Suddenly I'm starting to think the choice to jettison a story arc for standalone episodes for the entire season was very unwise.

My roommate abruptly decided to take offense when I stated that "the first minute of The Eleventh Hour was more memorable than almost the entirety of The Ghost Monument" I praised Jodie immensely so they didn't have a leg to stand on against my criticism.

Ideologies and SJWs on the cesspool that is Twitter are not enough to keep this show a float if something in the storytelling structure doesn't change and fast. Simply supporting mediocrity and below that because one wants a female lead amongst things to succeed is extremely damaging, not to mention a ridiculous ideal to have.

I want this show to be at the highest quality it can be, and I know it has the potential to achieve it with Jodie at the helm, as it did with the previous incarnations, if they could just tap into a strong narrative somewhere.

Thanks for posting. The music definitely is looking back at earlier incarnations of the show.
