LOTG aired in 1970 I believe, well after Planet of the Apes, so it's certainly possible Apes was an influence on that music--although some of these techniques just found their way into music of the period independently too and I doubt Goldsmith and Williams were looking over each other's shoulders too much. Still at that point, it was Goldsmith who was the more established film composer with a lot more major motion pictures to his credit than Williams.

Who knew there more than 2 seasons of this show?

I remember it as a kid, and I had the LOTG colorforms set with the giant cat and spool of thread. I now have the lunchbox.

I had those also, along with the board game. I loved the show - but what did I know I was 4 years old when it aired in 1968

I liked the fact that all of Irwin's shows seemed to take place in the same "universe". The Spindrift design in GIANTS is very close to the Flying Sub in VOYAGE, and all the vehicles have the front viewports (Jupiter 2, space pod,Seaview,Spindrift).
I always felt an easy explanation for the science flaws of GIANTS (that no such creatures could exist or support their own weight) was that the planet was in a parallel universe with it's own physical laws. And why didn't they ever ask a giant what the NAME of the damned planet was?
Love that JW score. I wish I could afford to buy the DVD set, which is still a bit pricey for me.

You might find it used on Amazon way cheap.

I just found a new factory sealed set on Ebay for 89.99 and took the plunge. Lowest price I could find.

Since we've been discussing Russ Garcia's FANTASTICA in another thread, I thought I'd point out that in several episodes of LOTG, some snippets of Russ' "Monsters Of Jupiter" appear as cues, re-recorded of course. I can't tell you which episodes use the cues but sharp eared Garcia fans who patiently watch the series from the beginning will hear them. And he got no credits I recall...I first noticed it when they ran LOTG on USA Netowrk back in the early 90s. I waited for end credits but no Garcia mention. I cannot recall who did the scoring which used it...(La Salle?)

Just finished season 2's "The Unsuspected" and that's where Russ Garcia's tune shows up...about 16 minutes in when Dan, Mark, and Fitzhugh leave the ship to look for the others. It re-occurs several times in the episode. Guess who did the score....Richard La Salle. So not only did he rip himself off a lot but others too. James Horner's inspiration?

That's interesting! I think the use of the Garcia piece was mentioned here years ago but never with that concrete information.

I've watched a couple more of La Salle's episodes...he is constantly using not only Russ' s theme but themes from some of his movies like THE DAY MARS INVADED EARTH and THE TIME TRAVELERS. (actually I love these themes so it doesn't bother me but where's his originality?)
I emailed Russ Garcia and told him about this and he wrote back "little people rip off giants" LOL

Time Travelers isn't a bad score. If I remember correctly parts of that score's great Main Title shows up in one of LaSalle's cues for the Lost in Space episode "The Derelict".

Yes, it's used at the climax as the Jupiter 2 approaches the planet. LAND OF THE GIANTS scores he did are full of TT references.

Although LaSalle is somewhat considered to be the "master plagiarist" I would love to see the release of especially two of his entertaining scores: Time Travelers and City Beneath the Sea. A release of City should be possible. It's from WB.

I enjoy all of La Salle's works...it's just that he re-used a few main themes he composed over and over so many times it becomes humorous. He actually started using new music in GIANTS series (I wonder if Irwin yelled at him to stop being lazy?) THE DAY MARS INVADED EARTH has some direct references to Herrmann's VERTIGO...MERMAIDS OF TIBURON has some nice cues but also is filled with his trademark chord changes...TWICE TOLD TALES is full of TIME TRAVELERS cues (slightly re-written). Even his LOST IN SPACE cues were recycled from TT.

I see that the imdb credits him with another partial score for the LiS episode "The Antimatter Man". Is that true?

I just finished watching the LOTG unaired pilot. Most of the score was stock from LIS however Alexander Courage does recieve the music credit so I assume it was for the title theme which seemed to be specially written for the show. It's a decent enough theme, typical of the period, but not a patch on William's, which makes you appreciate how genuinely exciting and important he made these shows sound.

BTW, the Giant entomoligist that captures Steve and Valerie looks like George Lucas. smile

Does he look different than the scientist who captures them in the aired pilot or is it the same guy? If so, I don't really see the similarity, I'm afraid.

I just watched the episode, "The Crash" again on Fancast - a fine score by JW - makes me want to dig out my Irwin Allen GNP set to hear this score again...:-)

I just saw season 2's "Home Sweet Home" and Garcia's Monster's of Jupiter is used right at the beginning in a great arrangement. The episode has one of the seven original scores by LaSalle for the series.
I also saw the episode "A Place Called Earth" which has a really great score by LaSalle. I wonder if we will ever see another release of music from Land of the Giants.
