This is a particular case where Mr Goldenthal was seemingly so well inspired that everything he wrote for the film was worth releasing, including alternate takes, etc. I agree with practically everyone in the thread that the original CD is one of the best presentations out there, ever. This just happens to be a rare case where an "archive" presentation seems warranted, considering the missing bits and bobs from the film, as well as alternate takes and arrangements.
That said, it is a shame that, to all appearances, the original tapes are either degraded or M.I.A. If they could be recovered, and a C&C release was possible, I would jump at it in a heartbeat.

Getting back to ALIEN 3, here's actually a rare case where I have some sort of preference of a film cue over the album cue, namely the sprinkler music. Far more aggressive and in-your-face and just spine-chillingly beautiful in the film, a bit more lackluster on album (but still rewarding).
That's what he wrote - nothing more than that and that's what's on the album - the film-version inter-mixes an alternate recording of ADAGIO AND it could also have an alternate recording of the sprinkler music but what is on the album reflects what is on the sheet.
Maybe. But I still prefer the film version.
We all love the film score album but it is just that, an album presentation of the score.
I think an expanded can exist much like BATMAN FOREVER and I look forward to hearing more music away from the film.
As I've stated, it would be awesome if a complete or expanded score could be re-recorded and released along with a re-recorded album release.
Has it really been 20 years?

I must be cookoo or something because my philosophy is this on expanded scores. I do not hate them, those that I don't need expanded, I'm glad that some are, why? It's pretty unselfish reasons. I think you can make more people happy with expanded scores. WHY? Those that want their original albums can easily make their own 40 minute albums or, trim a playlist down to the exact tracks they want. Also, those that want every note can get it. It seems to be best for everyone if we had expanded scores as everyone can make their own playlist as to what they want, PLUS we can be happy for our fellow collector on them getting all the music they want. Am I the only one who thinks of others in these releases? I'm not that selfish that I say, oh my gosh, I don't like expanded scores and I do not want to have to spend almost 3 minutes of my life to make my own BEST of CDR or playlist.
My way of thinking seems to be out of whack as I think of everyone else so often and my greatest joy is seeing others happy, especially when it comes to my fellow soundtrack friends!
Let's try to think about other people who want every note. Can we be happy for them, even if we do not need an expanded, we can at least say, great for them, that's awesome and for those that don't want expanded, well you can save another few dollars!
Well said my friend. Personally I am all for expanded releases. Sure there are some I would love to have and some I could care less about, but as Peter said there is something for everyone. If the labels didnt work as hard as they do, we wouldnt have such gems in complete or near complete form as the upcoming Trek The Motion Picture (or any of the other Trek films of which I am GLAD is out there), The Black Hole, The Superman Blue Box, Alien & Aliens among others. If you dont care for the expanded ones, then simply stick to what has been availiable for years. I actually keep the original albums even though I get the expanded ones, to always remember what it was like before. If a score comes out that I dont know or care about, then I am happy for those people that it pleases. I am very grateful to be able to have these things and I never thought I would...ever.
As for Aliens 3...I would love to see this expanded. I havent paid much attention to this score but I should listen to it and or watch the blu ray set that Ive got with the isolated score. For now, I am happy with expanded versions of Alien, Aliens, and Alien Resurrection...(regardless of what anyone thinks of the film) and look forward to the day when this can come out if possible. If not, at least we have something, as many films dont have a score album release of any kind.

Maybe I'm an old man, but 1992 seems like the modern era to me. I would have guessed ALIEN 3 was recorded digitally, and they'd have a safety copy on stable media, and in any case the elements are not very old, relative to numerous scores coming out.
It's an unhappy surprise to learn that some non-album portions of the score have decayed and are not backed up anyplace. Hollywood should take better care of its things.

It somehow feels incomplete without and the reprisal of the theme puts a nice definitive end to the creature 'element' before turning attention to the final climax of the movie.
