Steiner, Scott, Howard, Barry

An excellent idea: like all good awards ceremonies, announcing them in reverse order!

Steiner's score IS film music.

If the subject were "MOST IMPORTANT KONG SCORE," there's no doubt that Steiner is the only answer. But it's "FAVORITE KONG SCORE," and that's different.

Steiner's is the score I would love to own but a better version than some of the poorly re-recorded ones out there. Stromberg would defintely give us a wonderful version if it ever happens. In the meantime, I love the John Barry score. It is truly a beautiful score for a poorly conceived remake.

KING KONG LIVES - SCOTT

Of course my last post was but a jest. But the original is also my personal favourite. For me, not only one of the greatest of film scores, but one I too personally count as a favourite.

I also love the Barry score, and yes it has many of his trademark, lovely moments. I bought the album on release prior to seeing the movie. At first I was disappointed, but slowly got into the score long after the awful film itself became a distant memory.

But consider King Kong Escapes. It does have some nice moments. Whenever the heroine is in contact with Kong, we get an attempt at sentiment, completely missing from the previous Japanese Kongfest.

I don't enjoy films with apes and/or monkeys in them by and large. Or tea commercials, either.

None the less, I'm reasonably familiar with the scores written for several of them, and the one I like best for a Kong film - or indeed any film revolving around said animals - is John Barry's.

What about tea commercials with monkeys in them?

Steiner, Newton Howard, Barry. Sadly haven't heard the Scott.

It was tea commercials with monkeys in them to which I was referring - specifically chimpanzees, which I would very happily see become extinct. Tea commercials in general are fine, although there's one with Johnny Vegas and some knitted atrocity (a monkey? Who knows) that is also really annoying.

none doubt,
Max Steiner's King Kong is from far the best, there's no comparison!

All of these composers have created scores that I have loved, but I'm afraid
the film itself is not one that has much appeal to me.

Having said that, I would choose the Steiner 1933 KING KONG, if only because of
"The Boat In The Fog" cue. That particular scene & music sent chills down my spine.

Also I felt as though the original '33 KONG carried such a supreme significance to film music
in general, that all of the succeeding attempts were fairly or unfairly compared to it. So that
kind of takes away from the freedom a Barry, Scott or Howard might have had with the score.

Remember folks you might want to choose a minority vote for other Kong films like KING KONG VS GODZILLA, KING KONG ESCAPES, QUEEN KONG, KONG ISLAND.

I'm only really familiar with JNH's effort (which I greatly enjoy). I've seen the '33 King Kong and the '76 King Kong but barely remember their scores. I remember thinking that the John Barry score was overly indulgent for the film but I've never been a fan of that composer.

I haven't heard the Scott. I have to say the JNH is my favorite, although I strongly appreciate the Barry and Steiner.

When you're in the mood for Steiner's "Jungle Dance," it's hard to beat. smile

KING KONG by Steiner is my favorite, however I am also quite fond of HONG KONG.....music from the 1960s Fox-TV series, by Lionel Newman.
