I haven't listened to the samples--however every review of the FILM I've read has raved about the score. So while we fanboys are disgruntled because the director didn't reject the music with a dismissive "This will never pass muster on the FSM message board!" most of the other people in America will probably be happy.

Raving, seriously? Lets see how many non FSM score fans whom are raving about the score, actually purchase it.

What does purchasing the score have to do with anything?

Yeah I knew I didn't make that clear. In context of the film nothing. But all this talk that film scores can't have themes or melodies comes from ppl whom couldn't care less about the score, in or out of the film.

Well that's why we are here right? FSM wouldn't have existed if people weren't interested in purchasing scores. Now all of a sudden it doesn't matter how the music is outside the picture because the only important thing is how it is in the film. We get it, composers write music for the films but we all visit this web site because we are interested in buying music from films for I assume listening to it.

I'm sorry but I don't suffer from a predisposed notion of what a score should be based on the movie and what it shouldn't be; The funny thing about this thread is no one here has seen the movie! No one! And yet there are people who seem to know what music is used best for a movie they've only seen the trailer of.

How narrow minded, really... And whose to say that the album version wont feature a more adjusted listening experience? That suite (or patchwork) is just snippets and I got the feeling the thematic stuff was barely touched upon.

Try to keep an open mind until you've at least seen the movie or at minimum heard the full score, it is called 'film music'.

I think that's an over-broad generalization about why we're here, though yes, listening to music outside movies is a large part of it. We do discuss music in the context of films as well (and we engage in puerile name-calling, let's not forget that).

Regardless, we should have the wisdom to realize that the music was written to serve a different master. When somebody posts (as somebody did) that this score should have been rejected, he's not saying it should have been rejected from CD, but from the film. That is, he's saying "this music I'm hearing displeases me, and should not be in this film I haven't seen."

There is no shortage of music to listen to on CD; since this movie takes place in space, it seems to have given some people here an expectation for a more symphonic score for isolated listening. It's not that, and that's apparently irked some posters sufficiently to declare that it's the wrong choice for the film and to put quotation marks around the word "talent" when referring to the composer. This is a juvenile response. Listen to something you prefer, but allow that the filmmaker should choose what suits his film. And that it's a miracle when the music works away from the film. That last sentence is not my own thought, but a paraphrase of something John Williams said. He really should know.

Maybe you don't have a predisposed notion of other things also? E.g., you see a horrible-looking pair of pants and you need to actually put them on yourself to have an understanding of how horrible it looks on you?

I'm sorry but they're trying to sell a product and those things are called "PRE-views" for a reason.

Maybe the film itself will look amazing in its entirety. But those PRE-views make it look horribly fake, and gimmicky. The cliched droning score certainly does not help much.

And I say this as a massive fan of Azkaban and Children of Men.

Well facehugger, this thread is suffering from topic drift, as always. You think the film looks fake. Others are complaining that they won't buy the CD. There's a lot of disconnected disgruntlement here, but it's all over the map.

(What's funny is that the reviews I've seen, from established critics to internet fanboys, have been 100% raves on every possible level.)

As for the link being a preview, I'm pretty sure that i09 simply strung together audio clips available to preview the disc and called it a "suite." It is not the composer's or the studio's way of promoting the music (or the film), just the usual 30 or 60 second previews of each track cross-faded together. I wouldn't hold that Frankenstein monster against anybody but i09.

You do realize that SOME movies look LESS fake than others, hence BETTER, right?

I re-watched 2001 and The Abyss recently and they look much less fake (and almost not-fake, certainly NOT "horribly fake").

But I doubt you can tell the difference between a "horribly fake" movie and a much more "grounded" better movie.

What's funny is that not all reviews are raving 100%. They are certainly positive at the moment, but some reviews point out the flaws of the movie (i.e. one review is criticizing the emotional aspects of the movie). It may be a technical marvel, but from the trailers and, the SCORE, 2001 Space Odyssey this is not.

The score is an essential experience of a space movie, because, heck, "in space there is no sound". And this movie freakin' stars ONLY ONE character so not much dialogue is expected. Without an exceptional score (and I'm not asking for the traditional tear-jerking orchestral approach, mind), I honestly don't think this movie will be that great. --They could go ZERO music, with only Sandra Bullock's heavy panting and electronic beeping as background sound, AKA the 2001 Space Odyssey approach. But instead they went cliched droning and over-dramatic dissonant banging approach.

I don't like it. --Not that matters in the bigger picture. But one less ticket-buying customer for them.

I was referring to the reviews I've read, not the reviews you've read. Of course, some will point out flaws of the movie. What's your point? That it's not as great as a film considered one of the landmarks in cinematic history?

I don't care whether you like this movie or don't like this movie. Me, I haven't seen it. But I'm intrigued, based on the reviews I've read. By all means, enjoy feeling superior to me for lacking your insight and sophistication.

The reviews YOU've read? --You claim "it's funny that the reviews say great things blahblah" and it turns out it's just YOU being selective in reading reviews (i.e. "lack of insight")?

I'll be damned but this is pretty funny.

And I know you don't care about me. Then why bother to reply? Enjoy the rest of your day and ruminate on why I'm superior to you. --Hint, logic.

Well facehugger, there are two characters. George Clooney is also in it.

I don't see how it is off topic to the thread to discuss why the score doesn't seem like someone's cup of tea. Last time I checked this is not "lets not discuss anything because we haven't seen the movie".

Previews exist for a reason. If a film doesn't look interesting to someone in a preview then they should skip it in theaters because the marketing department failed. Interestingly enough, enjoying a score is not a requirement for my enjoyment of a film. I quite enjoyed Man of Steel and Kickass 2 as films but also don't like the scores on their own.

I'm actually very much looking forward to Gravity based on what I've seen of the film and I hope the clips with score are not representative of the whole thing or it may very well be a distracting score like facehugger said.

Yeah I also heard that the film is not actually only "Bullock-floating-in-space-for-120-minutes" as the trailers suggest. If that is the case, then the film probably works.

But I've seen clips of the film (the clip of Bullock been blown away from the exploding space station) and the score is really distracting, especially coupled with the CGI-ish scenes. Those constantly remind me that "this is just a movie and it's 100% fake." --Probably not the response the filmmaker is trying to elicit from the audience.

Jaws 3D had so many better effects shots.

James Cameron said Gravity is the best space movie he's ever seen. That's good enough for me. What I do find hilarious is that someone who hasn't even seen the movie would seriously suggest that the score should have been tossed, simply because it didn't encourage them to buy the album.

One of the best licenses we ever picked up was SOLARIS.

Sucker still sells for us AFTER all these years (and we are the second label to release it). Can't say the same about MOST things we released with BIG orchestras and BIGGER named composers.

We begged WB to let us release GRAVITY on CD. But, alas, Watertower is doing it themselves. So, because we are not doing it, now I know it will sell and most likely be nominated for awards. lol

You never know what appeals to the masses.
