Have you guys heard Hell? Their two albums Human Ramains and Curse and Chapter are some of the best satanic heavy metal I have heard. Quite theatrical they have clean vocals and dark themes. Some excellent guitar work there.

So I went down to a record shop in the city today to trade in some CDs, and lo and behold, there was Hell's Human Remains in the used metal bin for $5. Listened to it in the car on the way home and I really dig it!

I also snagged Death's Spiritual Healing and the latest one by The Black Dahlia Murder.

Moonspell ~ Under Satanae (2007)

Cool blend of gruff and clean vocals, with heavy beats and catchy riffs. Once I heard the track below I knew it had to be mine.

Awesome. Sometimes there can be a bit of a difference between how a band is live and how they sound on their album. A band we watched live in Nashville was awesome live with tons of energy. On the actual album they have no energy and sound terrible.

Augury ~ Fragmentary Evidence (2009)

This band falls under the "technical death metal" banner, but there's a plethora of virtuoso prog-jazz throughout the album as well, which makes for one of the most crazy-ass musical roller coaster rides I've taken in recent memory. Fans of growler/screamer combos will dig the vocals as well.

Gorguts ~ Obscura (1998)

Some of the guitar work reminds me of Sonny Sharrock.

I'm no metal head, but had to chime in because just this morning I was listening to the only Metal band whose music I own -
Blind Guardian.

Discovered them because of their Silmarillion album Nightfall in Middle Earth - couldn't resist the idea of a metal band going Tolkien for a whole hour.

It's not really my kind of thing - screaming is never gonna work for me and I'm not big on guitar-based music unless it's jazz or classical. But they've got great chops, lots of influences, and their songs have lots of choruses and clean vocals - and I love their hooks. And that their fans call them The Bards.

Much more enjoyable for me is their 2010 album At The Edge of Time, which again is almost all based on fantasy literature - Game of Thrones, Moorcock's Eternal Champion and Jordan's Wheel of Time, along with Norse mythology and even John Milton for heaven's sake.

Plus some of it is with an orchestra! Had to listen early this a.m. on Spotify and then cranked up the CD in the car, especially for Tanelorn.

Thanks for chiming in, Sean! I wasn't familiar with Blind Guardian, so I checked out your clip and some others on youtube and found myself drawn to their earlier thrashy stuff, so I added their '88 debut "Battalions of Fear" to my Xmas wish list. I won't give up on Nightfall or Edge, though; they might well soon grow on me (like Sirusjr's Hellish recommendation above).

This is a band I discovered way back during my Morbid Angel fetish. To me the best Vader sounded like something off of Abominations of Desolation or Altars of Madness.

On a curious note, though I love the albums above very much (Covenant was good too imo) my favorite MA album is Formulas Fatal to the Flesh.

I mostly stopped listening to the genre several years ago, but it sure was fun seeing Vader in this topic, not to mention a couple of other cool bands (never got into Power Metal besides Manowar though...I think they partly invented it anyway).

I just happened to be listening to the soundtrack to the 1989 Wes Craven film SHOCKER, which has a number of metal tracks. The bands include Megadeath, the German band Bonfire, glam metal band Dangerous Toys, and the Long Island band Dead On.

Also having rock tracks on the release are Iggy Pop, the New Jersey band Saraya, Voodoo X, and a one-off super-group called The Dudes of Wrath, which was comprised of Kiss' Paul Stanley and producer Desmond Child both on vocals, Vivian Campbell and Guy Mann-Dude on guitars, Whitesnake's Rudy Sarzo on bass guitar, and Mötley Crüe's Tommy Lee on drums. Also backing vocals by Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony and Kane Roberts.

I Am the Law and Caught in a Mosh by Anthrax. Probably the only two metal songs I own.

I saw Nightwish live a couple of weeks ago. I'm not sure if it was the location of where I was in the building, or the building itself, but the sound mix seemed off, and I wasn't able to clearly understand the lyrics from the lead singer most of the time. The music itself was great, and the musicianship outstanding, but I think I would get a better appreciation for them live in a different setting.

I'll be seeing Kamelot in a couple of weeks at a venue I know has great sound; it'll be my 3rd time seeing them and I'm still excited about the repeat visit.

I think it has to do both with the venue, the sound mixer, and sometimes where you stand in relation to the speakers. Glad you enjoyed it still mostly. Also exciting that you will be seeing Kamelot. I've been awaiting their new album and it is almost here. So it should be fun to hear some of their new material live. I skipped them this time around because the tickets have gotten more expensive and I am still bitter for how bad they sounded at Iron Maiden though ultimately it was the sound guy who screwed up.

I picked up Kamelot's new CD at a local FYE store a few weeks ago after reading the comments here. It's the first album I've heard by them, and I really dig it. Thanks for the heads up.

...and now for something completely different:
