GARY KESTER: Scary without makeup or high heels? If Zelda's not avaiable, RuPaul would fit the bill.

Seriously, if the remake is unfaithful to the novel (and that sounds like the case), as least I hope Industrial Light & Magic or whoever gets the special effects contract, I hope they at least are faithful to the Martians. The 1953 movie Martians bore no resemblance to Wells' Martians except they were both from Mars and could've used lots of Lysol.

Dakota Fanning will play Tom Cruise's daughter in TWOTW remake. Fanning previously appeared in another Spielberg project, the TAKEN miniseries. (I told you the remake would be a formula film with kids in it to appeal to kids so they can sell $$$$$ of Martian toy figurines at McDonald's, etc. just like JURASSIC PARK, et al.)

I must add, I'm much more interested in this than a modern day retelling of "The War of the Worlds." I mean, if you're going to make a movie based on the Wells novel, and you have the creative potential to really do it justice, why do we need another modern day adaptation after the 1953 and, God help us, 1996 version with Will Smith?

You took the words right out of my mouth!
What an unneccessary film.(and Tom Cruise to boot, ugh!)
And I am not crazy about the MUnich film either.

Come on Stevie baby, gives us some of the old magic.

Man, not even in production yet, not one frame of film shot and this movie has already been dismissed as horrible!

It's nice to see one of the most successful and talented directors of the last century dismissed as a hack. This is the same director who gave us Schindler's List, Color Purple, CE3K, Indiana Jones and a slew of other great films. To save himself embarrassment it would probably be smarter for him to just never do another genre picture because before he even has a script we all know its going to suck.

It's also great to see Tom Cruise being blamed for making the story suck just by starring in a movie! Apparently, no matter how good a script is, just casting him turns it to crap.

I am sure that the music will suck too! After all we have no idea whose composing it, but it will probably be that hack Williams. Why can’t Spielberg be original and bring in somebody like Hans Zimmer or James Horner?

Maybe you guys can strangle some other projects before they start sucking as well! Or maybe you should just kill all the directors who even think of making films, that way they won't make any bad films that so many people will want to see.

WOW!!!
mwruger: You expressed (in your own unique way, thank God) my exact thoughts precisely!
Ah, yes, the world is full of critics, and don't you find it somewhat humbling to be in the company of so many "experts?"
Quite amusing actually, if not downright laughable.

Mwr, I was going to respond earlier but thought better of it, until I saw your posting. Now who's over-reacting?

I just want to state here, categorically, that I agree with you, we should not prejudge this movie until it is a movie. And, despite the way this thread is turning, I really want to see Spielberg, Williams and Cruise turn Wells' novel into something new and brilliant and transcendent, as most of Spielberg and Williams' work has been to date, for me. In fact, that is my one true hope for this film -- that they will put a spin on it that none of us can see yet .

Personally, my initial knee-jerk reaction a few weeks back was based on (a) my disappointment that Spielberg was diverting from his Mossad project, which sounded like it was really shaping up to be something new for him, which I hope it still will be... and (b) my personal reaction to the news that this was not to be a literal realization of one of my favorite books, set in London (where I was born) and set in the Industrial Revolution (which had so much resonance for Wells to the theme of the book).

If you go beyond both those preconceptions and ask what are the possibilities for a new modern-day adaptation of this tale, there is certainly potential for contemporary socio-political parallel to alien invasion and bombardment, as there were in Wells' time. I will say no more, except I am sure those responsible have their spin on the subject beyond a Hollywood cookie cutter rehash; or at least that is what I am praying.

As for those responsible, Steven Spielberg has inspired and energized a lifetime's love of film in me. I am an admitted Spielberg nut. Williams, his musical muse, is unparalleled, so the same can be said there. I have no problem with Cruise, and have always been a fan since "Risky Business," although not every film he's made has been my cup of tea. "Minority Report" was a pretty great combination of the three, I'd say, so bring it on.

"The War of the Worlds" is without a doubt the score I'm most eagerly anticipating for summer 2005. Quite how they are going to pull it off, from soup to nuts in nine months, is anybody's guess. I really wish them the best, for all our sakes.

Hey, look at it this way: at one point wasn't there some talk that the only way this film could be made was if it was going to be a rock musical? As much as I love Jeff Wayne's 1978 album, at least we're now dealing with some filmmakers who have the power to put their own dramatic stamp on the story. I realize I am reversing my earlier statement now, but I hate to see these guys attacked before they've put a frame on film.

Ullllaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

I guess I should have used a wink, but I really didn't expect my post to need one... smile

mwruger and CAT, I agree with the two of you. I was just trying to say the same thing by taking the prevailing attitude of this thread to its extreme. (I had thought the AICN-like presentation was a dead giveaway. Oh, well.)

It's nice to see some people still have an open mind around here. smile

Guys: I'm not necessarliy saying the remake will be bad....but the novel is my standard of excellent sci-fi and I hoped that a film version would be a tribute to HG Wells.
But given that most of Cruise's movies rely on him being the cocky, arrogant superwarrior and universal stud, how does this bode for TWOTW in relation to the novel? I'm afraid this is going to be a butcher job just like the tv series was. Why can't Hollywood leave well enough alone. Wells is turning over in his grave.
As for the comment about having an open mind, sure the film may be good, but will it be good compared to the novel? If you've got a super stud with a precocious kid and maybe the stunning blonde love interest and stealth bombers and smart bombs.....where is that in the novel? If they want to make a film with a superstud hero, precocious daughter and stunning blonde love interest and high-tech weapons, do it like INDEPENDENCE DAY---just don't call THE WAR OF THE WORLDS.....because it isn't.

I think that Steven Spielberg took a look at the market he was going to pitch this film to and decided that more people were familiar with the George Pal version of the film and in the wake of the hugely successful ID4 movie that a modern setting would easier to get budget approval for. Considering the reported budget, this film has to widely successful to make money (the ONLY reason a Hollywood studio ever makes a film) having bankable star in a scenario that people can relate to is a must.

Can Steven Spielberg dazzle us? Sure he can. He’s done it before. Could it be a “1941” style bomb? Absolutely. I will wait until the film is completed to see if this is a good film or bad one and hope for the best.

I can certainly understand a purist’s point of view. There are many things that I feel that way about myself. It would probably be cool to see a period War of the Worlds. I think that there is resistance to this is Hollywood. When I feel violated by the system, I just don’t pay it. That’s the only thing it understands anyway, money

Dogplant – It was over the top. I was going for the whole Thomas Swift “Eat the Poor”, argument absurdum kind of thing..

MarkB – Sorry if I misunderstood your post. It seemed very inline with the other posts on the thread and I assumed that it was the natural progression of it. It was indeed your thread that prompted my response. I don’t do “Ain’t It Cool” anymore. I am in a 12 step program to avoid hype and drool. Skipping “Ain’t It Cool” is step 4 I think! smile

Mark, your post was totally awesome, dood. You rock and Speelburg roolz.

Dragon53, I completely understand your fears, and your points are well taken. It didn't do DreamWorks much good touting the Wells lineage with "The Time Machine," which I have to say was miserable -- give me Yvette Mimieux and Rod Taylor any day over the 1997 version.

Mwruger, where can I sign up for that 12 step program?

I understand dragon's fears too, but I just feel it's terribly unfair to preordain this project to failure. I happen to think (and hope) that this is a winning combination all around, and will be anxious to watch its progress.
And...NOTHING will probably ever come close to measuring up to the novel. But one can only hope for the best. smile

I can't speak for the others, but the reason I am disappointed is because I think Spielberg IS a great filmmaker!!
To me, directing another TWOTW would be like Spielberg saying his next film will be JURASSIC PARK IV.

As for his collaborating with Cruise again(oi!)I have two words to say about that: MINORITY REPORT
