MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: FALLOUT 2 CD UPDATE:

Artwork still not approved. It will NOT be going on sale tomorrow at 12 pm pst as scheduled. This title has been delayed until further notice.

As soon as everything gets squared away we shall move forth with the mission.

Sorry, guys.

This is mind boggling really. How could the studio not have everything approved by the films release? Wouldn’t the best time to release the soundtrack be with the films release?

Having zero inside knowledge whatsoever, my guess is that it's because Cruise is a very busy man between promoting FALLOUT and shooting TOP GUN 2.

Finally saw this movie! Thought it was fantastic!

Musically, I think it worked very well in complementing the movie, as a usual sounding 2018 action score, with a layer of Schifrin's themes peppered throughout. Listening to it as a soundtrack album, there is SOOO much music that is just same-y action ostinato stuff that is so common now where the orchestra is disguised with synths into some weird hybrid. I'll definitely still listen to this when I listen to the other M:I scores, but I'll probably only listen to a select number of tracks rather than the whole album. I can't help but wonder what this movie would've been like with someone like Kraemer coming back.

One of the things that bugged me was that Balfe didn't carry over the leitmotif's that Kraemer set up for the characters that reprise their roles, like Ilsa and Solomon Lane. He could've still applied his modern sound but still reprised those musical signatures in a unique way. That would've been amazing connective tissue that ends up feeling like a lost opportunity here since it's the first time they've directly carried over the main artery of villain and story into the next movie.

Overall, besides it really feeling like Balfe just took his personal contributions from TDK:Rises and repeated them through the action music, I think the music worked well in the film. In the 6 movies, I'd unfortunately put it toward's the bottom of the list, although I'm not sure where yet.

He specifically discusses why he didn’t bring back those themes in the above interview link.

Sweet, thanks. I'll take a listen. :-)

Amazon shows a release date of September 7. Has that been confirmed by LLL?

I've been coming more and more around on this soundtrack the more I listen to it (through YouTube bc I'm waiting to buy a CD(!) for it). It's still got some spots that I skip through, but overall, I am enjoying it more than I at first thought I did. Not sure if others, like me, who were really skeptical before it came out and a little underwhelmed when they first heard it are feeling something sort of similar now that we've had a lot more time to marinate on it...

Liking it as well. Yeah there are nods to Inception but luckily I like that score too. Def helps to see the film and hear it in context. Where is that darn expanded cd??

Just gave it another spin.

Still the laziest score I’ve heard in a while.

And any score that requires a playlist to find the good bits in all the flotsam isn’t a good score.

Because of threads like these, I really needed to write down my thoughts about this score, if anyone is interested in my opinion:

Saw this film the other night, I did not think that this was one of the best action films of all time. Within the context of the film, there score worked well during the action sequences, however for the non-action sequences Balfe's music was pretty poor.

This score sure is divisive. Some feel it lacks emotion, others feel it drowns in it. Some like the action scenes but hate the rest, others vice versa.

I find with the other MI scores even where they are good they tend to feel, away from the movie, that they are banging away at the main MI theme too much. This one at least tried something different. There is plenty of main theme still there but there is room to breathe.

I really do hope LaLa gets things worked out with the hold up on the CD soon. Waiting (im)patiently for it!
