Thor, are you familiar with South of Hell? It aired in the US late last year. Stars Mena Suvari (from American Beauty!) as an exorcist. I'm only just watching the first episode now but it didn't lose me in the first five minutes.

SALEM

Thor, I looked back through this thread and may have missed it, but ...

have you caught this show yet? You cannot get more paranormal than this show.

Set during the time of the Salem witch trials this show is about as dark and adult and intense as a broadcast American t.v.show could be. Produced on WGN, Chicago's superstation, man this is one hell of a supernatural show. Grand guignol style horror with better than average production values.

Again, it is a hard edged all out supernatural show imbued with a compelling story line with a very high gore quotient and extremely adult themes. Definitely not for the squeamish.

Awesome. Sounds up my alley! Thanks for the recommendation, I'll add it to the list too.

Just watched the pilot for STARGATE- SG-1

The 'sci-fi' element was just window dressing for what is basically a propaganda film for the US military intervention in the Middle East.
Is the whole series just a future set war/action show? If so , count me out.
BUT......
to my surprise and amazement the pilot featured a super hot chick butt necked!!!!!!
was this a premium cable show and is there nudity throughout the series??

if you have watched this your advice is most welcome

What is that, a new STARGATE show?

I really enjoyed the short-lived (one season) UNIVERSE, but don't care for any of the other, earlier incarnations at all, except the original film.

Ah....SG1. I read it as SGI (CSI: STARGATE? LOL!).

Yeah, I caught a couple of episodes of that show. Didn't care for it very much.

I've updated the first post with dates etc.

Many of the shows I'm following have ended their seasons (and some have been cancelled altogether, like MINORITY REPORT), but some are still on in their current season: FEAR THE WALKING DEAD, 12 MONKEYS, GAME OF THRONES, ORPHAN BLACK, OUTLANDER and PENNY DREADFUL.

I've also started watching HUMANS, the American remake of the Swedish series ÄKTA MÄNNISKOR (both have been on the list for some time). I was waiting for the Swedes to pick it up for a third season, but alas it seems to have been more or less cancelled. So I threw myself into the remake.

Another series I just discovered was HUNTERS -- a new SyFy series. I'm usually skeptical of SyFy-produced shows, but after the excellent THE EXPANSE -- and the entertaining KILLJOYS and DARK MATTER -- they seem to have upped their game. So I'm giving it a chance.

In the non-paranormal vein, I've also started watching THE AMERICANS, which I've also added to the list. I'm now up-to-date on that as well.

Well, HUNTERS was a waste. Came halfway through the first episode before giving up. This was back to SyFy's "old standard" again.

But I discovered a new series out called OUTCAST, about exorcism. It's apparently not scary enough, according to some of my colleagues, but I'll be giving it a chance.

Finished the first season of HUMANS, and it was very good; on the same level as the Swedish original. Here's hoping for more seasons.

I've also started watching PERSON OF INTEREST, which has been on the list for some time. Seen the first episode, and it's not exactly paranormal -- more like a technological action series -- but I'll give it a few more episodes.

Thor, you're wasting your time watching this stuff when you could be watching THE SAND PEBBLES -- having never seen it in your life?!!!!

I just don't get you, guy. But don't get mad... I'm just sayin'

Anyway, a new Sci-Fi series has started here in the States called "Wayward Pines" and I've tried watching the first two episodes, but it's just not gripping me. I'm giving up on it. I can't afford to waste my time.

Anyone else seen it and have an opinion?

By the way, "Penny Dreadful" I find quite dreadful. Just sayin'

Yeah, we talked about WAYWARD PINES earlier in the thread. I loved that show, and it's a shame it was cancelled after just one season.

I wasn't particularly enamoured with PENNY DREADFUL at first, but it's really 'getting into it' this season. I'm hooked!

I know THE SAND PEBBLES means a lot to you, but it's really a parenthesis in the scheme of things. In fact, none of the film folks I know have any knowledge of it at all. Still, I want to see it -- if nothing else because of how Goldsmith's score works in context. But as I told you earlier, it's a bit further down on my "to see list".

Can you give me an idea of just how long "further down" is? Life is short, Thor.

Also, I feel sorry you're not in a wider circle of people. How can you not know ANYONE who's seen TSP? Wow! You Norwegians!

Anyway, we have to have to subscribe to a channel called Showtime here in the US to watch PENNY DREADFUL, and I use to subscribe, but the first season just didn't do it for me.

My satellite bill was getting too large for my tastes, so I decided Showtime had to go, which I wasn't crazy about because I very much like their RAY DONOVAN series, but I don't miss PENNY.

Glad you enjoy it, though.

I think you may be overrating its position due to your personal relationship to the film. I would never even had known about it, had it not been for Goldsmith's involvement. Is this considered more of a classic in the US than over here, perhaps?

Oh, I don't pretend that it's a major American Classic Movie, only a minor one. Some think it overlong and ponderous, but others think it quite excellent. I'm actually somewhere in the middle. My affection for it is nostalgic that's true because it's one of those films my father took me to see as a kid and I've never forgotten it, but I believe there's something of a small cult following here in the States. Hell, there's even a fan website entirely devoted to it.

I wonder if it's on Blu-ray there in Norway, or available in HD streaming, because I'd only want tohear your opinion if you watch it in HD and on a large TV. What do you watch things on, by the way, Thor?

The US Blu-ray of THE SAND PEBBLES is unfortunately Region A locked, but if you have an all-region player, I happen to have an extra copy that someone I know didn't want anymore and gave to me. Give me an address there in Norway and I'd be happy to send it to you -- if you can play it and watch on a good-sized HD TV.

I'm not kidding, no problem really. You are a film scholar, correct? Believe me, it's just as much worth watching as PENNY DREADFUL, and I think more rewarding.

Thanks, John. Looks more like a period piece than a sci fi/time travel thing (much like OUTLANDER, really). But I've added TIMELESS as well as the new show STRANGER THINGS to the list.

Thor, I'm just following up on an earlier recommendation I gave you for SALEM. Just curious to see if you've had the opportunity yet to catch this yet or not. Truly, one of the better horror series on tv. imho of course.
