According to SAE, Jules Verne's The Light At The Edge Of The World is 6th place within their top 10 sellers as of Nov 23rd '14.

Quartet's marketing tactics seems to be working - that is, keep the titles in English (don't mention "Il Faro In Capo Al Mondo") and highlight Jules Verne instead of the composer's name.

This is a good thing, though. Has any other Piero Piccioni soundtrack (pre-order or otherwise) ever made it onto the weekly Top 10 best sellers?

Goodness, COLPO ROVENTE is alarming! I'm not comfortable with this kind outburst. Maybe I need a little time to find the Piccioni within.

I recently listened to THE 10TH VICTIM on vinyl and cd. It's disappointing compared to the lossless download version. Both in sound quality, album layout and missing bonus cues. For those who are considering getting this work.

Thanks for the info I'll have to check out the bonus tracks.

What CD of the 10 Victim did you check out was it the easy tempo disc

I love both of these scores especially Colpo Rovente give it a bit more time and come back to it again. Have not listened to Colpo Rovente for awhile but Camille 2000 which is about as close as you are going to get in style is still in regular rotation.

L'UOMO CHE RIDE I love this disc both the Savina and the minute amount of the Piccioni that was tacked on at the end. Depends on how you look at it something is better than nothing I had never heard of this Piccioni title before getting this CD.
Would love to be able to buy the complete score its extreme shortness on that disc is maybe a good thing it should not put another label off putting out a complete release after you have heard the trailer. wink

Hey wow, Easy Tempo. Camille 2000 is also available for download in CD quality, I'm not sure how that compares to the Easy Tempo print however the Juno download is excellent.

Has anyone found Piccioni worked on another Victor Hugo, apart from The Laughing Man?

I like most Le Dernier Jour d'un Condamné (The Last Day of a Condemned Man), alas no Piccioni.

IMHO in Piccioni's output nothing beats "C'era una volta" ("More than a miracle") for sheer gorgeousness and melodic invention.
The main theme, once heard, is impossible to forget: really life-enhancing music.
Thankfully available on a beautifully remastered, impeccably presented FSM edition.

I have had a quick investigation of the latest IL FARO IN CAPO AL MONDO. The sound quality is clearer and more open, probably due to Chris Malone's expertise, which is welcomed by me as I thought the GDM was a little "muddy".

Thanks to Quartet and all who put in their work for this edition.

Thanks I already own the GDM version but I'm always wondering about any differences in re issues and I did not know that Piccioni composed the score for Le Dernier Jour d'un Condamné

How have you found the track running order of the Quartet cd I have not tried to re arrange the GDM disc to listen to the LP program.

Looks like we are going to have to wait until next year to see the release of the mystery Piccioni title from Beat.

Hey WoW, I was only hoping Piccioni had a commission for something like Hugo's Le Dernier Jour d'un Condamné, alas he did not. The Miserables could have been interesting too. My day dreams.

This is Quartet's listing of the original album :

1. Ouverture (3:41) (On GDM this looks to be The Light At The Edge Of The World (Ovverture) @3'49")
2. Arabella (3:22)
3. L’Isola Misteriosa (4:23)
4. Jeux de Massacre (4:04)
5. Denton’s Flashbacks (4:51)
6. Love Affair (4:44) (On GDM this looks to be Love Affair (Emily Jane Theme) @4'46")
7. Kongre (4:07)
8. The Light (2:50) (On GDM this looks to be The Light (Denton & Emily Jane Theme) @2'53")

I based this on the times of the tracks most similar, as you can see. I think Quartet has managed this edition well with the tracks. GDM and Quartet both share the same track names. I do notice Quartet have slightly different theme numbering which seem due to the separation of album and film version.

If you have the GDM it seems clear you don't get any previously unreleased music, it is the work on the material which differs. So far to me, it looks wonderful, suffice to say nothing about the music. The work done makes the performance just a little more pleasant to hear, which I think is no easy task, that alone is sufficient for me to shell out for this and that I dearly wanted a CD pressing without forfeiting five or so other CD's.

Maybe an announcement will be made this year for the mysterious surprise from BEAT.

Also, despite the my slight distaste for Sordi Piccioni, which was likely to have been solid bread and butter for the Maestro, I'm looking forward to I TRE VOLTI, aka THE TREE FACES OF A WOMAN big grin Look at those directors may have been a great result.

Although I wouldn't put The Light at the top of my 5 favourites, it's up there with the best in my experience, but possibly a little too American? for me. Contrast it with Hands Over The City, The Foreigner or The Demon.

Thanks again you have saved me from having to try and work out the track list for the LP program and as much as I would like to order the new Quartet cd I'm giving it a miss have cut way back on ordering especially titles that I've already got in my collection.
Not sure that the Light would even make my top ten.

My top three Sordi titles:
Bello, Onestro, Emigrato Australia Sposerebbe Compaesana Illibata

Amore Mio Aiutami
Fumo Di Londra

Just received THE LIGHT AT THE EDGE OF THE WORLD. It's a beautiful score. No regrets in buying this CD from a movie I had never seen.

I only have I MAGLIARI and IN VAGGIO CON PAPA. They are my favourite big grin

I will do some more exploration in this area, however Piccioni + Sordi hasn't really caught my fancy yet. I'm in Australia's west so there is a chance I'll meet the girl if I travel a bit, she is a looker alright.

I recommended "More than a miracle" ...also on the classical-melodic side of Piccioni's output , I would heartily recommend his score to the Italian 1974 TV mini-series Anna Karenina.
In the "doomed love theme" department it ranks up there with the very best ..think Elmer Bernstein's Summer and Smoke ..it's that good, IMHO.
Incredible combination of beauty and sadness, a class act.
Unfortunately available only on a very expensive japanese CD, but with very good sound remastered by Claudio Fuiano.
On the loungey-trippy side, I absolutely love "Scacco alla Regina", with the voice of the incomparable Edda Dell'Orso, "used" by Piccioni rather differently than by Morricone.

Heads up!

A new Piccioni has been loosed by the ever generous Saimel.

L'ITALIA VISTA DAL CIELO

Fragments of this title have appeared on the Verita Note Piccioni TV 70's disc?

26. L'ITALIA VISTA DAL CIELO (TEMA TITOLI DI TESTA)
27. L'ITALIA VISTA DAL CIELO (BOSSA N 1)
28. L'ITALIA VISTA DAL CIELO (TEMA AMORE)
29. L'ITALIA VISTA DAL CIELO (BEAT)
30. L'ITALIA VISTA DAL CIELO (TEMA AMORE)

Seems so.

I own the Verita Note and I like the music overall:

However, I'm not familiar with any of the TV shows that the music is from.
It appears as though the program L'Italia Vista Dal Cielo has had different segments from several years using other composers, so I don't know if this new Saimel will repeat some of the tracks from the Verita Note or consist of unreleased material.

Perhaps 'misterkane' from Rosebud in Spain and/or Stefan Schlegel could verify the contents?

I myself was not involved in the production of this new Saimel CD, but at least I can tell you some facts about the individual episodes of the TV series L'ITALIA VISTA DAL CIELO.
Piccioni scored altogether five episodes of this series, two of which belong to the CAM catalogue and which are therefore not on this new CD. These were "Emilia Romagna" from 1968 and "Sicilia" from 1970. Both with very nice themes, the first one has a main theme which comes even very close to the Prince Rodrigo theme from MORE THAN A MIRACLE.
The music on this new Saimel CD however does come from these three later episodes:
"Toscana" (1971), "Lombardia" (1972) and "Lazio" (1975), all of which were formerly owned by General Music and now of course by GDM. All the 7 tracks which were available on the Japanese Verita Note CD were taken from the "Lombardia" episode from 1972. On the Saimel CD we now seem to have 5 tracks (30-34) from this "Lombardia" score, not all of which are the same ones as those on Verita Note. Of course, the Main Title is certainly identical (Track 26 on Verita Note vs. Track 30 on the Saimel CD) and also Tema Amore (Track 30 on Verita Note vs. Track 34 on Saimel). Among the others there seem to be slight differences and above all the Verita Note apparently has two additional cues.
The "Lazio" episode of ITALIA VISTA DAL CIELO is one of the longest of the entire series with more than 60 minutes and therefore also has most of the Piccioni music: Tracks 1-26 + 35 on the Saimel CD come from this episode.
The "Toscana" episode is represented with tracks 27-29.
In the TV episodes a lot of music can be heard, but at least about 50% was archival music by Piccioni either owned by CAM or by General Music. So for example in "Lazio" you also can hear some tracks from his scores for MONACHE DI SANT'ARCANGELO, TRAVOLTI DA UN INSOLITO DESTINO or ANNA KARENINA. But keep in mind that this archival music is just about 50% of the complete score.
The rest of the score was indeed newly composed for each episode and has a lot of stylistic changes, because the scenery changes often very quickly and therefore also the music has to change. Probably because so much music was needed for these episodes and there were certainly also some time or budget constraints, it was decided to partly draw on older Piccioni scores from the same music publisher.
But I am quite sure that only the newly composed music for these three episodes of which there is also quite a lot in the TV episodes themselves will be on this new Saimel CD.

That's quite interesting. I hope the CAM episodes will be released. There are also 2 tracks on the Easy Tempo releases from the late 90s that are not on the Verita Note release.

I'm also glad a label still has some interest in releasing GDM material since the GDM label seem to have abandoned the CD route and only propose low-quality Itunes releases frown

So this implies that Daniela Durrazini @ Gruppo Sugar has access to - and could offer license to release - those 2 earliest segments from that series.

Would you know if there exists any more unreleased music by Piccioni within the archives from C.A.M.?

I recall reading somewhere, Stefan, that there is a 1990s listing of all recordings/tapes that reside within the C.A.M. encyclopedia. Is this correct? If so, would it be possible to post this information here @ FSM so members could browse the listing of contents on which film titles whose music continues to exist?

When did GDM stop producing CDs, slint?

As of December 2014, GDM was still offering Ortolani (Tenderly & La Ragazza Di Nome Giulio) ... and they've been doing 2CD sets of Morricone in 2015.

Yes, there exists such a list from 1991 which was at that time meant only for the members of a planned CAM CD club. There are two problems with posting the complete list on this board:
1) It is a really extensive list with more than 50 pages in DIN A4 size. Also listed there are all those films where only CAM "repertoire" was used. Such a title would for example be METRALLETA STEIN which has just been issued on CD by the Cinedelic label and where only stock music from the CAM archives by several different composers has been used, but no new score was composed at all
2) I don't know if such a posting would be really ok with all those people who produce those Italian CDs. I don't think that everybody wants to lay all of their cards open on such a public board.

I also hope that the two early Piccioni scores for ITALIA VISTA DAL CIELO will at some time still be released. It could be that someone has already licensed it from them. Anyway, they are of course in the CAM list.
You also have to consider that this list now is almost 25 years old. So even though for the most part it is still valid, there can be a few cases where a title is still in the list, but nevertheless tapes aren't available anymore. Therefore I would say that the list is valid for about 90% of the titles.
There are still about 20 Piccioni titles in the CAM catalogue which have not been released till now or maybe only with one track on a compilation.
Besides the two mentioned episodes from ITALIA VISTA DAL CIELO these are the titles in more or less chronological order:
- IL SEGRETO DELLA SIERRA DORADA
- I RAGAZZI DEI PARIOLI
- L'IMPIEGATO
- BREVI AMORI A PALMA DI MAJORCA
- LA NOTTE BRAVA
- MONDO DI NOTTE (1 + 2)
- I DOLCI INGANNI
- LA VIACCIA
- L'ASSASSINO
- LE SVEDESI
- MANI IN ALTO
- IL GIORNO PIU' CORTO
- TRE PER UNA RAPINA
- GIOVINEZZA GIOVINEZZA
- ADDIO ALEXANDRA
- FERMATE IL MONDO...VOGLIO SCENDERE
- TOH E' MORTA LA NONNA
- PER QUESTA NOTTE
- CRISTO SI E' FERMATO A EBOLI
- LA PRESENZA PERFETTTA

But since January 2015 nothing else anymore on CD (and now also on LP) than those Morricone reissues. It seems that all other titles from the former Italian RCA catalogue which for CD purposes had always been co-produced with Intermezzo during the last few years now go directly to iTunes as digital download only. But no CD for these titles anymore. A sad development of things.

This is indeed very sad. Most of these new titles are very exciting, yet I have no interest in Itunes files. GDM provided me no explanation and no information about how we could eventually get them in standard quality. With only a bit of effort they could propose the downloads on a website where lossless files are available (QoBuz, etc) or propose the files directly to collectors, even for a premium. Digitmovies and Beat told me that the titles are licensed to GDM so there is no easy way to release them, and also *because* they are actually in Itunes, they become less interesting targets for CD releases. Intermezzo said they have no future plans to release these CDs. I hope Saimel or Alhambra can do something wink It's hard to believe I have to stick to 50 yr old vinyls.

Nevertheless, thanks to all other labels to keep releasing CDs! smile
