BBC AMERICA AND FATHOM EVENTS PRESENT DOCTOR WHO: THE POWER OF THE DALEKS ANIMATED SERIES IN CINEMAS NATIONWIDE FOR ONE NIGHT

FEATURING PATRICK TROUGHTON’S DEBUT AS THE DOCTOR

A Special Cinema Event on November 14 Only, in Advance of BBC AMERICA’s Premiere on November 19

New York – October 12, 2016 – BBC AMERICA and Fathom Events announced today a one-night special theatrical screening event of Doctor Who: The Power of the Daleks, a six-part animated series on Monday, November 14, at 7:00pm local time – 50 years after the original BBC broadcast – in advance of the premiere on BBC AMERICA on Saturday, November 19, at 8:25pm ET. The cinema event will also feature exclusive bonus content including interviews with members of the original cast.

Tickets for Doctor Who: The Power of the Daleks in cinemas can be purchased online beginning Friday, October 14, 2016 at 10am ET by visiting www.FathomEvents.com, or at participating theater box offices. Fans throughout the U.S. will be able to enjoy the event in select movie theaters through Fathom’s Digital Broadcast Network. For a complete list of theater locations visit the Fathom Events website (theaters and participants are subject to change).

The Power of the Daleks is one of the most celebrated Doctor Who adventures, and yet no complete film recordings are known to have survived. The master negatives were destroyed in an archive purge in 1974. This brand new animation, being released 50 years after its only UK broadcast, is based on the program’s original audio recordings, surviving photographs, and film clips. The six-part adventure features the regeneration – or as it was then called “renewal” – of First Doctor, William Hartnell, into Second Doctor, Patrick Troughton, and follows the Time Lord and his companions Polly (Anneke Wills) and Ben (Michael Craze) as they do battle with the Daleks on the planet Vulcan.

“Ahead of the premiere on BBC AMERICA, it is a rare treat to be able to bring the lost episode, Power of the Daleks, to life using modern animation techniques. Doctor Who cinema events have been incredibly successful, and this is extraordinary opportunity to allow a new generation of fans the opportunity to experience this classic adventure for the first time,” said Soumya Sriraman, EVP, Franchise and Digital Enterprises, BBC Worldwide North America.

“We’re pleased to continue our long-standing and successful partnership with BBC AMERICA to bring more fantastic Doctor Who content to the big screen,” said Fathom Events Vice President of Programming Kymberli Frueh. “The Whovians are always one of our biggest and most passionate groups of fans at the cinemas.”

Doctor Who: The Power of the Daleks is produced and directed by Charles Norton, with character designs from acclaimed comic book artists Martin Geraghty and Adrian Salmon.

Since its launch in 1963, Doctor Who has become one of the world’s best loved dramas and is certified by the Guinness Book of World Records as the most successful sci-fi series ever. Doctor Who is BBC AMERICA’s highest-rated series and has received numerous awards across its 53 years. The series set new records in 2013 with a global simulcast event of the 50th anniversary special on television and in theaters, in partnership with Fathom Events in the U.S. Doctor Who returns with a Christmas Special in December and new season in Spring 2017 on BBC AMERICA

Thought to be lost forever, The Power of the Daleks is the missing third serial of the fourth season of Doctor Who. No complete film recordings or master negatives of The Power of the Daleks are known to have survived an archive purge in 1974. This brand new animation is recreated from original audio, photographs, and surviving film clips.

The Power of the Daleks is one of the most celebrated Doctor Who adventures. The six-part adventure, presented in its entirety here as a single, feature-length event, includes the regeneration, or as it was then called "renewal," of First Doctor (William Hartnell) into Second Doctor (Patrick Troughton). The Time Lord and his companions Polly (Anneke Wills) and Ben (Michael Craze) do battle with the Daleks on the planet Vulcan.
The first-ever adventure by The 2nd Doctor (Patrick Troughton) comes to DVD at last! Doctor Who - Story #030: The Power of the Daleks was the first serial which aired following the first-ever regeneration (or "renewal," as they called it at the time) of our favorite Time Lord. It was the 7th story in which the Daleks appeared, and a powerful one (pun intended!) that shows how dangerous they could be.

None of the six episodes in this serial had survived the "junking" of the original source videotapes which the BBC routinely did back in the day. The BBC has completely recreated the video for these six episodes, and married it to the surviving audio tracks (which of course were cleaned up and restored).

The story will be shown theatrically in the USA on November 14th, and in Canada on November 30th...one night only, in both cases! On November 19th, BBC America will begin airing the story weekly. But what about home video for we physical media lovers? It's getting a UK release later this month. What about on THIS side of the Atlantic?

TVShowsOnDVD has checked with the studio, and gotten a direct answer from them. We've been informed that Doctor Who - Story #030: The Power of the Daleks will be available on DVD State-side at "wide" general retail on January 31st. Pricing, details, and North American package art have not been made available yet.

Nor have extras...but the theatrical release is being accompanied by "bonus content including interviews with members of the original cast"; it seems natural that this would also be included on the DVD releases as well, right? Let's hope so! We're sure, at the very least, that this title will have both black-and-white and color versions of the story.

This serial from the end of 1966 is seeing its 50th anniversary starting in two days (the first installment aired on the BBC on 11/5/1966), and we can't wait to finally see it after all this time! We should have more information on the title in the coming weeks; stay tuned for updates!

Fifty years after its only UK broadcast, one of Doctor Who's most celebrated, lost adventures is regenerated, with a brand new hand-drawn, black and white animation, synchronized with a digitally remastered recording of the original 1966 audio. After his first regeneration, the Time Lord and his companions, Polly and Ben, do battle with an old foe on the mysterious planet Vulcan. Can Polly and Ben cope with the new Doctor? How will the Doctor take to his new body? And will they ever overcome the power of the Daleks?
A month ago we had the scoop that the North American street date for a general "wide" release of Doctor Who - Story #030: The Power of the Daleks will be January 31st. At the time, details, cost and North American box art had not been finalized and announced. We're still waiting on a list of bonus material for the release on this side of the pond.

But now BBC Home Entertainment has revealed that the 2-DVD set will cost $24.98 SRP, and they've provided the finished back-of-the-box synopsis we've quoted above. Furthermore, we have the front package art for you below, obtained directly from BBC sources (and unlike the art currently showing at Amazon's pre-order listing - see the button link directly under this write-up - the word "color" is spelled in the American fashion, rather than the British fashion).

Fantom Publishing have released details on the next two releases in their Who Talk range of alternative audio commmentaries.

First up is the original television adventure, An Unearthly Child. Producer Paul W T Ballard explains:
"One of the first thoughts we had after the success of Web and Enemy, was to revisit the first Doctor Who story and complete the commentary for it. The original DVD release of An Unearthly Child covered only two out of four of the episodes, plus the pilot, whereas we have been able to introduce some new voices to the mix and complete all four instalments plus the pilot.

The commentary features William Russell (Ian Chesterton), Jeremy Young (Kal), Waris Hussein (Director), Brian Hodgson (Special Sound) and Clive Doig (Vision Mixer), and is moderated by the omnipresent Toby Hadoke.

The second release celebrates the Cyber 60s, with Paul saying:
Whilst we have an ongoing mission to cover episodes without any commentary at all, we are also having fun bringing new contributors to the fold to provide alternatives on some classic serials. I think Cyber60s is a fitting celebration of fifty years of one of Doctor Who's most popular monsters.

The set contains commentaries for the Patrick Troughton serials The Tomb of the Cybermen, The Wheel in Space and The Invasion. Moderated by both Paul and Toby, this release features Wendy Padbury (Zoe), Michael Kilgarriff (Cyber Controller), Sally Faulkner (Isobel), Sylvia James (Make-Up), Roger Bunce (Cameraman) and Marcia Wheeler (Assistant Floor Manager).

The company are also offering a special edition bundle featuring both commentaries: each set will be signed by an actor from each release as well as a both disc featuring additional commentaries on The Tenth Planet and The Moonbase. These CDs are very limited, and exclusively available via the Who Talk website.

Who Talk will return in 2017 with a full of schedule of alternative DVD Commentaries.

Bought Doctor Who : The Power Of the Daleks the other day. I do not know what to think. The Daleks animation is great, but the human animation in probably the worst I have seen on a Doctor Who show. What do others think?

I have always found the animation to be something of a hit and miss. The only exception being, The Tenth Planet. I much prefer the telesnaps. An example of this is The Web of Fear, episode 3. So yes, I would go for the telesnaps over the animation everytime.

German DVD distributer Pandastorm Pictures announced on their Facebook page the release of The Caves of Androzani ("Die Höhlen von Androzani") for the German market. The serial will be dubbed to German specifically for this release, as no German dub exists for any story before The Twin Dilemma, with the exception of The Five Doctors.

The Caves of Androzani has never been broadcasted on German television. In the late 80's and early 90's German TV channel RTL Plus transmitted all serials featuring the seventh Doctor. In 1995 the channel VOX aired The Five Doctors and all serials featuring the sixth Doctor. All those stories have been released by Pandastorm Pictures on DVD boxed sets in the past few years.

There will be two different versions of Die Höhlen von Androzani:

Collectors Edition Mediabook: Limited and numbered to 1,500 copies. This edition looks like a book and will feature an extensive booklet and the English- and German-language soundtracks and subtitles. Also includes all special features that can be found on the UK Special Edition DVD. Release date: 25th August 2017
Regular Edition: Will be the same as the Mediabook, only in a standard DVD slip case. Release date: 13th October 2017
All Doctor Who DVD's by Pandastorm Pictures are usually code-free. The DVD is not available for pre-order yet.

News has emerged that following 2016’s animation of the missing 1966 Doctor Who story The Power of the Dales, BBC Worldwide’s next animated project will be the legendary lost Tom Baker story Shada.

As fans will know, Shada was set to be the final story in the Fourth Doctor’s sixth season in early 1980, but was abandoned partway through recording due to strike action in the TV studio. With only the exteriors and one of three studio sessions completed, the story was only around 50% finished, and a number of attempts to remount the final studio sessions failed.

One of the reasons Shada is still held in such high regard is that it was then-script editor Douglas Adams’ final work on the series. As a six-part story, it would also have been his longest Doctor Who serial.

Shada has since appeared on VHS and DVD in an incomplete version, and as a novel, an audiobook, an online animation (with the Doctor recast as Paul McGann), and in an unofficial animated version from Ian Levine, completing the story utilising animated segments and voice recordings from most of the extant cast but – significantly – a voice artist’s impression of Tom Baker rather than an appearance from the actor himself. Levine’s version was offered to BBC Worldwide some years ago but declined.

All that could be about to change, with BBC Worldwide set to release their latest version this November.

According to actor Daniel Hill’s Spotlight account, he is credited with an appearance in “Doctor Who – Shada” for “television”, under the joint directorship of Pennant Roberts (the serial’s original television director) and Charles Norton – the director in charge of Worldwide’s Power of the Daleks project. The reference to “television” might be an indication of another North American TV broadcast for the serial.

Indeed, Hill himself tweeted on June 27th of this year: “fantastic time recording for SHADA 2017”, following this up on July 3rd with “v exciting ready in November apparently”. Hill was, of course, cast as the character Chris Parsons in the original production.

All of which pretty much confirms this as the follow-up to The Power of the Daleks. And although fans of the missing 1960s episodes will no doubt be disappointed at the news, the audio track for this new version will effectively comprise brand new “old” Doctor Who, whereas the soundtrack recordings for the missing black and white serials have already been released often several times over. With Tom Baker’s involvement an almost certainty since he’s finally become one of the “Big Finish Doctors”, the key question that now remains is, will this be a full animation of the entire story (perhaps the most likely option if a broadcast is indeed the intention), or a part animation of only the missing segments? Time, as they say, will tell.

For the first time ever, BBC Worldwide will release a completed version of the previously unbroadcast 1970s Doctor Who story SHADA, written by Douglas Adams (Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency) and featuring the return of Tom Baker as the Fourth Doctor!

In 1979,SHADA was set to be the celebratory end to the seventeenth season of Doctor Who. Critically acclaimed writer Douglas Adams had completed the script, Tom Baker's Doctor was at the height of his popularity, and the series had bigger audiences than ever before. But a strike at the BBC in November 1979 interrupted production and the adventure was abandoned. The story became legendary among fans.

Now, thirty-eight years later, SHADA will be seen at last in a new version combining remastered original footage with brand new, hand-drawn colour animation to complete the story. The animation will feature the newly-recorded voices of the original cast, including Tom Baker as the Doctor and Lalla Ward as Romana, performing the original script.

Tom Baker says, "SHADA was one of my favorite Doctor Who stories. I have many fond memories of shooting the location scenes in Cambridge, and it was disappointing not to finish the story in studio. I'm so glad that BBC Worldwide have found a way to bring fans a complete visual version."

SHADA finds the Doctor in Cambridge working alongside companion and retired Time Lord, Professor Chronotis, to defeat the evil alien Skagra who is attempting to steal the secrets to the prison planet, Shada.
In the summer of 1979, Douglas Adams began work on a script for what was initially called "Sunburst"...intended to air in January 1980 as the final serial arc for the 17th season of the original Doctor Who program. It was eventually renamed, and shooting began in mid-October for Doctor Who - Story #109: Shada, starring Tom Baker as the 4th Doctor and Lalla Ward as his companion, Romana (also a Time Lord...or Time Lady, if you prefer).

Unfortunately, at the same time in October 1979 as Shada production began, the BBC began dealing with a union strike, and as a result there was no lighting available for Doctor Who to film on location with. They tried to continue as best as possible, only getting around half of the filming done. The strike dragged on until November, and then December. When it became clear that the production couldn't be continued until at least January (when the first of 6 episodes was supposed to have been airing!), the production was shut down permanently (leaving Story #108: The Horns of Nimon) as the season seventeen finale).

In 1983, a scene from the produced portion of Shada was taken and re-purposed for the 4th Doctor's appearance (becoming frozen on a gondola) in the 20th Anniversary special, Doctor Who - Story #130: The Five Doctors. That wouldn't be the last we would see of that Shada footage, however! In 1992, a VHS version of Doctor Who - Story #109: Shada was released, with Tom Baker narrating from the original script for the parts which had never been produced on film. In 2013, BBC Home Entertainment released a DVD set titled Doctor Who - Story #109: Shada: More Than 30 Years In The TARDIS. Besides the VHS version of Shada, it also contained the documentary "More Than 30 Years in the TARDIS," along with a Flash (computer) version of Shada (starring Paul McGann, the 8th Doctor, and Lalla Ward as "Romana"), and a long list of other bonus material (many Doctor Who fans bought it for the extras, rather than the feature!).

Now, however, Shada is getting finished at long last! Several weeks ago the BBC News reported that "Tom Baker finishes abandoned 1979 Shada serial," explaining in the details that "It will be released on BBC Worldwide with the original footage combined with new colour animations and voiceovers to complete the story. The newly-recorded lines from Baker as the Doctor and Lalla Ward as his companion, Romana, will follow the original script by Douglas Adams, the creator of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy." In the UK, Shada will be released on both DVD and Blu-ray Disc on December 4th, following a digital release less than two weeks prior.

This morning we've discovered that both Amazon.com and the BBC Shop have added listings for a January 9th DVD release in the USA for this new version of Doctor Who - Story #109: Shada. There are only DVD listings for now; no Blu-ray entries have been located at either seller. And the Amazon listing isn't accepting pre-orders at this time, although the BBC Shop is taking them now! The discounted cost at the BBC Shop is $19.98, for a 2-disc set. Extras, if any, aren't listed.

Never has so much time been spent on a Doctor Who story. What a shame last Classic Series Producer John Nathan-Turner failed to in his attempts to get the BBC to remount it back in the day. So many imperfect versions! Personally I enjoyed the one produced by fan Ian Levine. The improvement here of course being the actual Tom Baker doing his own voice instead of an impression.

Hope the music score is accurately Dudley Simpson in style. No (vhs version) ugly Keff McCulloch nonsense!
