I knew it!

We're not talking about your football team now (or your face)! (say previous in the mumbled voice of a sulking 10 year old in the 1980s).

This is the short version of my review. The passionate, geeky version will be reserved for the Marvel comic book thread. smile

Captain America: Civil War 10/10

Count me as another who feels this s Marvel's best film so far. It may sound bizarre to describe it as "an intimate, globetrotting epic", but that's how I see it. Civil War managed to give plenty of the spotlight to quite a large cast as it deftly juggled between action setpieces and character stuff. I thought RDJ gave his best Tony Stark performance here. Plus, Chris Evans is spot-on perfect as Cap. I loved this movie and didn't want it to end. Great pacing and a lot more depth, humor, and excellent character chemistry. Black Panther was magnificent, but then he always was. Spidey, Ant-Man, and Vision were wonderful. Everyone involved was just so good. Hats off to the drector, editors, and screenwriter. Beautiful cinematography, too. Here's hoping the days of washed out drab teal and orange movies are behind us.

Best Stan Lee cameo, too.

Captain America: Civil War- 2.5-5

First hour and a half was dreadfully dull with paper thin motivations , dead pan acting, and elaborate action sequences that held no stakes. It also hurts they sort of redid Winter Soldier all over again.

I had two fundamental issues with the film. First the alliances were mixed up. Stark the independent egocentric billionaire would never conform to authority, while Rogers was born and bread to be a good soldier and follow orders. So the premise of the plot was flawed from the start.

Second was the fact so many of the MCU films are nothing more than a feature length trailer for the next movie or spin off in the series. If you get right down to it, by the time the end credits roll, the film resolved nothing, and there’s really zero character development.

Was there anything enjoyable here? Yes, the last hour was a blast. The film really needed a character like Thor who was missing this time around. But this was thankfully rectified with the introduction of Ant-Man and Spider-Man.

First we got a fun Superhero on Superhero smack down. It’s the only time I felt a little bit giddy, which is something I want to feel when watching a Super Hero movie.

Finally the film ends with a rather dramatic and far more serious fight sequence which juxtapose but complimented the earlier fun sequence . At least the film concluded with some emotional weight.

As always the score was only serviceable, and I can only imagine how exciting the action scenes could have been with a score that complimented the stunts and visuals. Imagine James Horner’s Rocketeer music during the Falcon’s fight sequences. I know I was.

At the end of the day the MCU is like washing your head. Wet hair, apply shampoo, rinse, and repeat.

Black Swan - 7.5/10

This was the second time I'd seen it and I liked it more than the first time. I think on initial viewing I was a little uncomfortable with where it was going and how far, but already knowing that gave the chance to watch out for the subtleties that might have escaped the first time.

Every participant comes out well, from the slowly disintegrating lead to the supporting cast, none of whom really put a foot wrong. The score was overwhelmed by the masterpiece of the ballet music, cutely adapted by Clint Mansell, whose original work didn't have a prayer against the Tchaikovsky and (I'd guess deliberately) was kept relatively low key and moved the film along. And I don't recall ever being given a homework assignment like the one Cassell gives Portman...

the independent egocentric billionaire would never conform to authority, while Rogers was born and bread to be a good soldier and follow orders. So the premise of the plot was flawed from the start.

Each character was acting in accordance with their character.

Stark says had two reasons to want to sign the accords: the "personal" story he was introduced to at the start from the Law and Order(?) actress and the Ultron/Sokovia fiasco as a whole.

Cap never just "followed orders", he always did what he felt was the right course of action wthin the framework of the orders--and is MUCH more of an individual than you think. He's also protecting Bucky, the last remaining connection to his past (perhaps selfishly). Cap in the comics was often at odds with SHIELD--so was Stark, btw, but that relationship had more complicated things with it.

I saw a lot of subtle developments with Stark's character and I wonder if they will address them in future films (will Downey return? I'm not a movie insider enthusiast like you people).

As for the awesome Ant-Man, is in the comics, he was a Stark International employee but in the film he sides with Cap, which is fine. He chose wisely. big grin

Civil War Spoiler-

My thoughts of where they were going to go with Captain America and Iron Man ended up being all wrong. I thought the actors wanted out, or Disney wanted to replace them with cheaper actors. So I thought Rogers would die in this film and Buckey would take over as CA. I also expected Stark to bow out and be replaced with the War Machine dude

Obviously neither is going to happen!

Jack's Back 3/10 - It's quite silly and not as dark as i was hoping for. James Spader is very decent in it. There's a couple of twists as to who the killer is which are okay. I always wanted to see it since i was little and would see the box on the video shelf and thought it looked scary.

Nice to know that you got at least some entertainment value out of Civil War, which I'll be seeing again this week.

I really am enjoying these Marvel films. Don't know how Dr. Strange will be, though; not big on sorcery mumbo jumbo.

Eye in the Sky - 8.5/9 out of 10.
A solid picture about drone warfare and ethics, and the mire of global politics.

An excellent movie, no superheros, no spandex or tights, almost no effects, no comics, which means almost no one will see it.

It's in my Netflix queue for whenever it comes to video.

You're not alone ado/solium. I say those same words to myself every time I watch the latest Woody Allen film and you people don't talk about his work, either.

I find most of Allen's new stuff at least as tiresome as mediocre superhero movies, to be honest. I did enjoy Midnight in Paris, but To Rome with Love was godawful and Magic in the Moonlight subpar. I do intend to see Blue Jasmine and Irrational Man one of these days.

I loved early Woody Allen films from the 70's. But for some reason grew tired of his shtick. But I haven't given him a fare look in 20 years. I should probably see what I've been missing.

I know it might be hard to believe but Ado and Solium really are different people.
I realize we agree to an uncanny degree.

I rather liked Allen's older movies, he said in the Hollywood Reporter that he likes very few of his own movies. I do admire his work ethic, but I feel like Woody is stamping these things out a bit too much just because he enjoys doing it, and sometimes his casting seems like it is a 'just because' kind of thing.

I do like Whit Stillman, and Love and Friendship certainly looks good.

Mastadge you should like Eye in the Sky- hopefully it is out on disc pretty soon, I would think so.

Yeah, I know Gavin Hood did his Hollywood thing. He might be done with it, he should be, he is a talented guy, and he can obviously can put a film together outside Hwood just fine. I have heard some people liked Enders Game just fine, but I have not seen it.

Ha, didn't even notice that. I maybe demented in some ways, but I don't play two members on FSM. If I did one would always be arguing with the other.

We've all seen this movie: it's called Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. big grin

Funny about the animosity towards super-hero movies but Star Wars always gets a free pass of devout worship.
