just started s.2 of THE 100

brm

not digging s. 2 at all, 4 eps in

Really? I think it gets better and better. The end of season 2 is pretty awesome, as well as the entirety of season 3 where an A.I. element is introduced.

.... it is so derivative of other , better post -apocalYpse shows (.eg REVOLUTION)

brm

not to mention GOT~

GAME OF THRONES? How do you get THAT association from THE 100?!?

But fair enough if you don't like it. As I said, I'd urge you to check out the third season (the plotlines for this are laid out at the end of season 2), but I'm not going to force you to continue or anything! big grin

the whole thing with trying to unite the various tribes to fight a common enemy; Mance Ryder, Jon Snow etc. is practically the entire scenario for s.2

Well, I got through 4 and a half seasons of PERSON OF INTEREST before giving up. I had read that it apparently got more serialized and that it would have more of a story arc in the last couple of seasons, so I stuck with it, but it certainly did NOT. The only story arc aspects were relegated to endings and beginnings of seasons. The rest is just your average 'crime of the week' episode with tons of rapid-fire plot information jammed into the dialogue -- something I absolutely DETEST! And the science fiction element I had hoped would be more pronounced, never happened.

So screw that! I know I only had 1 and a half season left before the series' end, but things were going so sluggish (I must have used about a year on those 4 and a half seasons), I just decided to pull the plug.

Big fan of what Jonathan Nolan is doing on WESTWORLD, though -- that's more my cup of tea (although that's also a relatively slow show).

Yeah, it is very slow.
I find myself most involved when the scientists are discussing the park and esp. when they "interview' the hosts.
The western action sequenced trend to put me into a stupor. Do others feel that way?

I've steered clear of BLACK MIRROR because it's an anthology show (if it ain't got an arc, it ain't worth it!), but some of my colleagues have said positive things about it, so I might give it a chance.

I recently watched them and found them to range from decent enough to really good. Think of them like condensed soundtrack albums! wink but I do think you'd like some of them at least. Some are a little straight forward.

WESTWORLD -

I was greatly intrigued that HBO was doing this show and had set up a hell of cast, especially landing Anthony Hopkins. Overall, the show has been OK as took then weeks for the much anticipate plot device to finally happen. I will admit that it dragged its feet for the first several weeks to the point that I was just about to give up on it. I also don't care of the music on the opening titles as it just doesn't lend itself to either a futuristic world on the brink of destruction or even towards the western flair of the show. It's just...off.

What I do like about the show is it does bring into focus artificial intelligence and the moral and ethical implications of what could happen if indeed our machines, who look and sound exactly human, become self aware and see what has been going on with them and their counter parts and their reaction to it. "Host" Thandie Newton to me is the series stand out. Watching her "robot" come to life before our eyes is memorizing and chilling at the same time. But she is closely followed by the mysterious and 2 steps ahead "creator" of Westworld, Anthony Hopkins. He is in fine form here as is really the rest of the cast.

So for me while the series creators probably spent 2 episodes longer than they should have in setting up the primary premise, the machine revolt as it were, it's an extremely smart show that does force questions that more than likely will have to be addressed and dealt with in the not too distant future.

7 out 10

So all the shows I'm following are currently on hiatus, and I'm not aware of any new shows I've missed. So perhaps it's time to consult the list in the first post for the shows I haven't yet explored.

I'm thinking perhaps MEDIUM (although not too keen on the 'procedural drama' bit). Other altneratives on the list are GHOST WHISPERER (which sounds kinda like MEDIUM), PERSONS UNKNOWN, SALEM, SLEEPY HOLLOW, SOUTH OF HELL, THE MAGICIANS, VIRTUALITY? Or anthology shows like MASTERS OF HORROR and BLACK MIRROR (although I'm not too keen on the anthology format; I prefer more serialized affairs).

What about The Crown, Thor?

What? The British royals aren't paranormal?

So I tried SOUTH OF HELL, but didn't manage more than two episodes. It comes off as very '90s cheesy' and not scary at all. I have no idea if the show was cancelled or not, but I'm gonna put this on the shelf for now.

I just watched season one of OUTLANDER.

It started out as a woman's romance with attractive actors and interesting history about Scotland in the 1700's.
But then................
oh my, oh my!

Tobias Menzies - who seems to be in every show on air- steps into the picture. The show then becomes an unrelieved wallow in rape, sado-masochism and depraved homo-erotic encounters.
WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?????
DO women - the intended audience- like watching torture and rape?

If Menzies is dead (unlikely) I will come back for s.2. Otherwise , I am done!
brm

ps the sadistic British officer seems to be a staple of period pieces...TURN, THE PATRIOT, REVOLUTION etc.

I agree that Menzies' actions sometimes border on the speculative, but I hope and believe there's a redemption story down the road. I don't mind witnessing such cruel acts if there is some purpose to it.

Just to warn you -- it gets far worse in season 2!

I just stumbled on the 2004 BBC docudrama SPACE ODYSSEY: VOYAGE TO THE PLANETS, which was a very nice 2-part miniseries. A sort of cross between DEFYING GRAVITY and the recent MARS series on National Geographic. Sure, some of the effects were a bit dated, and some of the dramatic potential was a bit unfulfilled, but I'm really a sucker for this kind of premise. Added it to the list as "seen".

Yeah. I mean that the violence (and "sex" scenes) do appear speculative at times, inserted for nothing else than their shock value. But I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt for now.
