I agree that Menzies' actions sometimes border on the speculative, ! "speculative" ? are you sure you are using the correct term THor? Yeah. I mean that the violence (and "sex" scenes) do appear speculative at times, inserted for nothing else than their shock value. But I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt for now. No, that is not the correct term. Sorry. Maybe "sensationalized' is what you mean. Don't feel too bad, you still speak better English than 99 percent of the Americans, brits, canadians and Aussies on this board. LOL bruce

SURVIVIORS - BBC I was a big fan of the original so put off watching this for a long time. I figured, correctly, that it would be a rehash of the original featuring a "multi-cultural' cast representing the "diversity of British society". I was correct about the 'diversity casting' but it is actually a credible rethinking of the original. IIRC the original was purely a survival story and did not include the bits about the two government agencies still operating. bruce

Taboo Tom Hardy is in fine, gritty form here, set in 1814 London England, which has never looked so dirty, grungy, gray and decadent. I'ts a good series, full of intrigue, political machinations and a tale of revenge, though of what and how is still yet to be seen. I love it so far and while it is not a paranormal series, there is a hint of some subtle supernatural occurrences. And for those who are "sensitive" there is more than one reason why this show is called Taboo. The language, violence and sexual situations are at times a hard R. But to divulge anything else may derail some of the plot or surprises of this show. Everything about this series suggests a lot of money has been spent and it shows in every scene. Great writing, performances, cinematography, etc, makes this a worthwhile addition on anyones to see list. True, it moves at a leisurely pace, but it does so to develop the story and characters. **** out of 5 Penny Dreadful I just finished season one and I was hooked after only episode 1. I am enamored by the cinematography and art design of this show. The performances are really good and the series is a gritty, dark and sometimes scary horror show. I am itching to start season 2.

I didn't want to go back through the whole thread to find out if you have seen it or not, but if you've not seen a short-lived (six episodes I think) series from 2000 called "All Souls", skip it. It's needlessly slow and not rewarding enough. Just in the second episode alone they blew a wad that should have been a season concluder. (scored by Joel McNeely, for those curious)

slightly OT: I just picked up KOLCHAK THE NIGHT STALKER and boy is it bad! Riotengine among others, loves it but it is a total misfire. The premise is fantastic - and thankfully X-FILES took it up - but the execution is all wrong. First, its played for laughs. Kolchak is Lois Lane and Simon Oakland is Perry White -threatening to fire him every second THe local police chief is the same guy from every Raymond Chandler etc. novel, threatening to jail him every ep. The paranormal aspects take up only a small portion of each ep. The schtick described above , takes up much of the running time. And, the Kolchak character is unlikeable, to say the least! Melle's music cant save this turkey BRM

I think the next one on the list I'm going for is PERSONS UNKNOWN, if I can find it. But there are several titles that have been on the list forever, that I've yet to check out. I've procrastinated because of various reasons -- MEDIUM and GHOST WHISPERER (because they're procedural dramas, which I don't really care for), MASTERS OF HORROR and BLACK MIRROR (because they're anthology shows without an arc), or several shows that are perhaps "too" comedy (DEAD LIKE ME, HYPERDRIVE, THE MIDDLEMAN, THE TICK, WONDERFALLS) or perhaps "too" fantasy (THE MAGICIANS). Any of these you would nonetheless recommend? I'm getting to the end of the list soon, and I need more stuff to check out!

Ghost Whisperer is to Medium like Charmed was to Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Almost the same show, but far blander. Medium was created by Glenn Gordon Caron, who made Moonlighting and Now and Again, and the accent is very much on good writing. But is is a procedural, generally. The episodes are mostly stand-alones, but they do remember what happened previously. Bryan Fuller created Dead Like Me, Wonderfalls, and Pushing Daisies, all of which are wonderful comedy/fantasy shows. His other big title is Hannibal, which is less funny, but also great. And he did the upcoming American Gods. I didn't check to see if these shows were mentioned - Limitless, BrainDead, iZombie, Crazy Ex-Girfriend. They all have comedic/fantasy vibes, definitely the offspring of shows like Medium and Wonderfalls.

Thanks for the comments, David! Ghost Whisperer is to Medium like Charmed was to Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Almost the same show, but far blander. Not a pronounced story arc, and with much reliance on procedural drama. Bryan Fuller created Dead Like Me, Wonderfalls, and Pushing Daisies, all of which are wonderful comedy/fantasy shows. His other big title is Hannibal, which is less funny, but also great. And he did the upcoming American Gods. I have issues with Bryan Fuller. Seen both HANNIBAL and PUSHING DAISIES and while there are some good elements there, I have problems with his 'quirky' or 'offbeat' tone. I didn't check to see if these shows were mentioned - Limitless, BrainDead, iZombie, Crazy Ex-Girfriend. They all have comedic/fantasy vibes, definitely the offspring of shows like Medium and Wonderfalls. CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND was mentioned in the 'sit-com' thread. I tried one episode and hated it. iZOMBIE I've seen mentioned before, but that -- too -- seems to be more of a comedy show. So are BRAINDEAD and LIMITLESS, but they seem more refined or subtle that way. I'll add them to the list.

So are BRAINDEAD and LIMITLESS, but they seem more refined or subtle that way. I'll add them to the list. Limitless is best seen as a direct sequel to the movie. It starts as basically a remake, but later ties in to specific events in the film. It does get very quirky in the humor - one episode is a tribute to Ferris Bueller's Day Off, replicating dialogue and scenes, one episode replaces all scary words with safe replacement words. Fans of the show consider those to be series highlights, but you might roll your eyes a bit. And it is a procedural. BrainDead is a funny political satire, but gets pretty quirky too. Episode recaps are presented as songs, sung by a guy who eventually becomes an on-screen greek chorus. I thought that was great, but that may not be your cup of tea. It does have a definitive finale, it finishes like it was a mini-series.
