I remember hearing some where that it was released as "Mad Max 2" overseas and called "The Road Warrior" in the US. Was this true? Yes. The first film wasn't widely distributed in the States, so the sequel couldn't really trade on the association.

I recently re-watched The Road Warrior along with the other Mad Max pictures because of Fury Road. My enthusiasm for Brian May's score was rekindled. The music for the first film is actually somewhat harsher and angrier, while there is a melancholy tone that hangs over the second film's score that broadens its scope somewhat. I found the soundtrack album from the first film to be pretty satisfying as far as what's in the film, and of course Tadlow release of Maurice Jarre's score for Beyond Thunderdome is complete and definitive. So that just leaves The Road Warrior. The Road Warrior is a highly thematic, very detailed score that I think would make a great listening experience in complete form. From what I can tell watching the film, the themes are introduced slowly over the course of the score from the spare main title on, but then culminate in the rousing orchestral setpieces heard during the big truck chase at the end. The gyro captain's theme is one of my favorites, and there is an extended treatment toward the end of the truck chase. It's a shame that it probably wouldn't be financially viable to make a new recording. If the stems do exist, hopefully one of our specialist labels could work their magic with it to expand the score to its full length someday. I really, really love this score. If I were to win the lottery (not likely since I never play), I wouldn't put it past myself to ask James Fitzpatrick to make a new recording of this score.

They're completely different composers working in completely different styles. Maurice Jarre's BEYOND THUNDERDOME probably wouldn't work cut into the first two films, but is anyone gonna call that a "pathetic attempt" at film music? FURY ROAD is a fine modern day action score that works great in the film, which is probably the greatest American action film of the millennium.
