One of the most boring pilot episodes of any television series I have seen....

Have you seen THE LEFTOVERS???!!!!

Both shows lost me with their lame pilots.
I mean Eva Green dressed like a spinster! Not even an glimpse of cleavage??

If only you had had a little patience... boy, if only you had waited.

I thought the show was magificent; I love that Gothic atmosphere, Victorian values, moments of horror.

FRankly, I MIGHT try again.
I was really put off by the introduction of VICTOR Frankenstein (a riff that has previously, recently been employed by another show) and the promise of more characters from fiction turning up. Not very original imo
brm

ps I will NEVER watch another ep of the truly awful LEFTOVERS aka 4400: THE PREQUEL...

So happy this is coming out. Just watched the final episode last night and the music really MAKES this show. Beautiful moving stuff. Can't wait for the cd.

Seems there is a 24 bit edition available from HDTracks for those who like that kind of bit rate:

John Logan about music in PENNY DREADFUL:
QUOTE:
[Kara Howland:] I am very curious about the music in this. Abel Korzeniowski is a Polish classical composer. He really does not do TV. How did he happen to come on this? Was he somebody that you chose specifically? How important to the atmosphere of this show is the music?
John: “It’s gigantic. It’s important in any show, in any sort of dramatic event because it can set a tone, a mood, counterpoint a mood. Juan Bayona, who directed our first two episodes last season, loved Abel’s work, so he made me familiar with it. What I liked about it, ironically for a show with so much passion in it, is it was very intellectual music. It was very smart music and there was something austere about it.
So I met with Abel and we discussed the feeling of the show. He said, ‘What do you want this to feel like musically?’ and I said, ‘I want it to be poignant and I want there to be anguish in everything; the pulse-pounding horror, the shock, the build of menace are extra to me.’ That’s the sweet spot of what Abel composes and this season, in fact, he’s composed three waltzes for us. There’s a major dancing component to this season and they’re all original. They’re all unique to the characters. There’s a Vanessa and Ethan waltz. There’s a larger waltz for the other characters. There’s a creature waltz. So seeing him write in that form specifically for these characters has been very exciting.”

Eagerly waiting for season 2. This score was one of my favorites from last year, surpassing almost every film score.

Some choral music in the Season 2 premiere, and a new theme for Brona.

And one sequence heavily temp tracked with Kilar's DRACULA score. But otherwise another exceptional work by Korzeniowski.

Series two is much better than the first series, which was a bit mish mash.

Its found its feet with the witch storyline - excellently played by the peaky blinders girl Helen mcCrory.

And im grabbed by the music too - quite gothic horror, more old fashioned style.
It certainly stands out and you notice it - something i hardly ever do anymore on tv, with just a handful of exceptions.

So you saw the rough edit with the temp track or are you just guessing?

I agree that Season 2 is better. But, in Season 1, a lot of time had to be spent introducing the audience to all the characters and understanding each character's situation. It's a very complex show.

And one major character is still a mystery—Sir Malcolm's servant Sembene. I have a feeling he's going to be pivotal in the future.

I can't wait to play this marvelous music on my Hi-Fi system.

My love with Korzeniowski began thanks to La-La Land (thank you Matt & MV!) when they released Copernicus' Star in 2011. After hearing this amazing work, I did seek for A Single Man (pure bliss too!) and I bought a lot of the following albums (except Polish CDs as I believe there is some dialogue over the music but I may be wrong on this point).

Anyway, if you're like me, in love with the Melting Waltz, you can pre-order the CD around different places:
https://www.varesesarabande.com/products/penny-dreadful-seasons-2-3
(you can listen to samples!)

For European consummers, it may not be interesting to order it from USA because of shipping fees and possible taxes.

So here are Europeans place where you can pre-order your copy now:

Hope it helps!
