Never "whittle" and never ever a thought to do so. I do not make playlists. I listen to albums all the way through: film scores, and all other music.

This 100%! Otherwise its pointless buying scores.

I don't think so, even if you're buying pop & rock albums, people may not want to play every single song. It's not pointless to select from 100+ minutes of STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE score my favorite 75 minutes, often because I don't have 100+ minutes to listen to it all, but I'd like to get through the highlights.

I don't find this any different than the "highlights" album versions of musicals that you can buy alongside the full, 3-disc versions of the complete musical, such as for Les Mis.

Alien: Covenant mini-album, using only the Jerry material:

The Covenant
Sails
Planet 4 - Main Theme
Wheat Field
Dead Civilization
Survivors
Alien Covenant Theme

Thanks to someone on the "Alien: Covenant by Jerry Goldsmith" thread, which I can't find for the life of me (does this board's search function not work anymore?). I think it may have been The Mutant?

Got mine also. And it is much better in this release than on the original album.

The previously unreleased tracks ad much more sense to the theme and variations approach adopted by Frizzell for this score.

New tracks like "Foot Massage-Fast Learner" and "Elgyn's Death" are great, but the highlights are the tracks for the finale, the previously unreleased portion of "Birth of the Newborn", "Call Meets the Newborn" (my favourite track of the entire soundtrack), the "Finale" (for sure the track more missed when the original album was released) and the End Titles march.

Really hope this one is selling well.

If I had to recommend an alternate "album arrangement" I'd ommit some of the suspense - short tracks from the begining of the movie, just to get faster to the fantastic final portion of this score, in fact I've programmed it for my IPod as follows:

CD1(1), CD1(3), CD1 (6), CD1(8), CD1(9), CD2(15) I prefer this edited version of the Aliens Escape - removing some of the start-stop structure of the original track to result in more full action flow, CD1(12), CD1(14), CD1(16), CD1(17), CD1(18), CD1(19), CD1(21), CD1(22), CD2(1), CD2(2), CD2(3), CD2(4).

Interesting. I think the ALIEN: COVENANT album is pretty much perfect the way it is. One of the year's highlights, this.

So, due to SBD and Graham telling me my RUSSIA HOUSE whittle was too short, I went back to the CD this weekend to see what tracks could/should be added.
The only two tracks that could make the jump are 'Crossing Over' and 'The Deal', but even those just feel a bit 'more of the same'.
I honestly think this score says all it's got to say within the first 6 tracks. I added Barley's Love cos it plays like a nice album closer.
I'm gonna play those two cues a few more times and see if they can take my existing 22 minute programme closer to an old Varese Sarabande 30 minute classic CD.
Cheers!

'The Family Arrives' is a good cue because it develops into a nice jazz track and would bring you nicely up to the 30 minute level...

Thanks for the suggestion Peter smile

Here's my 'Whittle Edition' for MINORITY REPORT, a score I do like, but find a bit heavy and ponderous on the lengthy CD.
1.Minority Report
2.Can You See?
3.Pre-Crime To The Rescue
4.Sean & Lara
5.Spyders
6.Everybody Runs
7.Sean's Theme
8.Anderton's Great Escape
9.Sean by Agatha
10.Psychic Truth/Finale
11.A New Beginning
Not sure how long my edited edition runs, but I do find it trims out a lot of the fat wink

I always skip a number of the "poker playing" cues in the middle of the Casino Royale CD, because they're seriously uninteresting. Taking those out reduce the album to a great 50-minute highlights reel. smile

Interesting, Kev. I've never felt any desire to make playlists out of John Williams' original soundtrack presentations, as they've been pretty much perfect all the time.

Regarding the Williams whittlings... well, you know I don't whittle, but I can see where Kev's coming from with his MINORITY REPORT prog. I do find quite a lot of JW's post-2000 CDs to be quite hard to get through in one sitting, although it might be partially due to my waning attention span. If I did whittle, I'd do something with the aforementioned MINORITY REPORT too, plus his other Spielberg collaborations WAR OF THE WORLDS and (possibly especially) MUNICH.

But as I've said before, when I listen to those albums, I prefer to "do" them in chunks of around 20 minutes, then continue later. That way even the dense, heavy, "boring" tracks sound like they're being listened to anew.

Yeah (Thor & Graham), while it is somewhat sacrilege to even dare 'whittle away at the Williams', his latter years scores have contained some 'noodling suspense/atmospheric' cues that may work great in the film, but slow down the pace of the 60-70 minute CD or even stop it stone dead. Like Graham says, Munich is VERY GUILTY of this, I would agree.
Seven Years In Tibet is another that needed some whittle (maybe Geisha too).
My bigger problem with War Of The Worlds wasn't so much any dull tracks, but the 'out of order' sequencing, which for me (this time) ruined the ebb and flow of the music.
Like the JNH/Shyamalan scores (The Village, Lady In The Water), once I re-jigged WOTW into film sequence order, I enjoyed it a whole lot more.
Saying that, stuff like War Horse and Lincoln, I canna get enough of.

Oh come on! Now we were having such a good time talking about reshuffling and abbreviating, and you had to drag in FILM ORDER! Shame on you, Kev, shame on you. wink

Attention, citizens of Whittleton. I have posted alternate album covers for the whittled version of The Goonies, The Russia House and Minority Report, over at the Custom Covers thread.

I just "whittled" my Close Encounters score for my home-made CD-R.

Disc 1....

Omit "Barry's Kidnapping" (I wasn't aware ETs demanded ransom for their abductees)
Omit "The Dialogue"

Substitute "Main Title" from the Arista CD for this disc's Main Title.

The perfect CE3K CD!

I always preferred the original track title The Abduction of Barry. Dunno why they changed it.

Lisa Gerrard and James Orr's science fiction/time travel score to 2:22 was one of my runner-ups to the Top 10 last year (fine score for one of the year's WORST movies), but it had a ridiculous 90-minute running time. So here's my playlist, which IMO heightens the score from OK to GREAT!:

1. Like it or Not
2. Someone to Stay
5. The Stars
6. In Control
7. Can I Help You
11. Eyes Meet
14. 222
15. A Drop of Water
16. Patterns
25. Out of Control
26. Back in Time
27. Change of Plan
29. Time Stands Still
30. Love Transcends Time
21: 223

Total running time: 48 min.

I can’t believe people remove The Conversation from CE3K! I even added Advance Scout Greeting to the main program! They are vital to the score!

Great topic, Kev!

Sacrilege or not, this is how I prefer Temple of Doom:

Return to the Village / Raiders March
Nocturnal Activities
Indy and the Villagers
Short Round's Theme
The Scroll/To Pankot Palace
The Temple Of Doom
Approaching The Stones
Short Round Escapes
Saving Willie
Water!
The Broken Bridge/British Relief
End Credits

Yup, it is indeed missing at least half the cues from the original album -- because Williams put all the wrong music on the original, and left-off most of the best stuff!

I've got Desplat's TWILIGHT-NEW MOON score CD here with me now.
72 mins worth!!
I remember it's got a nice main theme and some cool brooding cues, but the length has turned me off in the past.
Time to whittle.
Has anyone tackled this score yet?
Any nice 30-40 min play list to share?
