I've told the missus to look for a BOGOF deal on my coffin and stick all my CD's in the extra one and lay it beside me.

Naaaahhhh, not really, I think I'm gonna burn!!!

It’s worse here in the UK. It’s technically illegal now to import a legally purchased CD into iTunes (or other music software). How ridiculous is that?!

@ OnyaBirri - Are you saying when you buy a CD you're not buying a license for listening to the music? It's my understanding you are, and the medium used to deliver the music doesn't matter. Sell the CD and you sell the license for listening to that music. Under fair use you can make a back up copy as long as you don't sell the original.

I am not "saying" anything. Throughout the thread, I have been asking. I am asking if anyone can cite an instance of this scenario being addressed in either legislation or a ruling. I am not aware of any, and from what I have read over the years, the issue is far from settled. The example that I quoted above from the alleged copyright lawyer addresses the paradox.

TerraEpon's confession at how (easily) "amazed" he is. Good stuff coming from one of this board's "establishment" figures.

What does that even mean?

Maybe..I know its a drag..but maybe you can make a list of those LP´s which haven't been released yet on CD.
I´m sure some people here on the forum might wanna take a look and maybe buy some.

There are a lot of LP´s still unreleased:
THE LONG DUEL
THE HOT ROCK
THE CACTUS FLOWER
etc.etc.

Just a thought...

Don't forget folks that there's a big police satellite in the sky monitoring everything we write on the "computer" and what we say on the "telephone", so it's just as well I've never done any of the above. Especially the bit about the sofa.

This is one of the best replies I've ever seen.

There have been some truly great posts in this thread.

TerraEpon's confession at how (easily) "amazed" he is. Good stuff coming from one of this board's "establishment" figures.
Solium's passive-aggressive, "I'm not a copyright lawyer, but I'm going to post like one" routine
Basil's hilarious "gratitude." Humor from a Chelsea FC supporter. Who knew?

Of course, it was all undone a bit by Graham's having to mention that ham-fisted, allegorical science fantasy series from the forever-dead 1960s, but I'm feeling enough faux forgiveness to "let it go."

Huh? How am I passive aggressive? I simply stated the facts as I know them, and asked for clarification where I might be misinformed. No, I'm not a copyright lawyer but I know good amount about it. Though this music issue is confusing as hell.

Nothing against you, sol, but this topic started as a concerned film music fan's collection quandry, but it quickly turned into a bunch of internet know-it-alls popping their chops over the letter of copyright law.

Isn't that the norm around here?

I'm well into my 70s now and I've been collecting soundtracks for over 50 years so I've got a lot and many have not been played in 30 or so years. So at the behest (alright 'threat' ) of my wife I've decided tho reduce my collection down to around 250 of my most cherished LPs and CDs. So I'm now beginning to list all those that I simply cannot do without. And at least I can play each one at least once a year.
Most of my 'holy grails' have been released or re-recorded and I've signed up for James Fitzpatricks "King of Kings" and that will probably be the last.
What to do with the rest? I don't know I've never sold anything on eBay before but I'm sure there are places out there that would take them.
But it's the making of damn lists that I hate. Anyway it's been a grand life, if frustrating sometimes , and I don't want to "shuffle off this mortal coil" and leave my wife saying " What the f*** am I going to do with all this shit".
Cheers!!!!

Stovepipe,

Please send me on your list of CDs that you need to find a new home. My address is as follows: davidmoloney7(at)gmail(dot)com. I am based in Ireland.

The original poster says that he has barely listened recently to many of the records in his collection which he has amassed over 50 years.

Yet the first response says he should get an external drive and archive them there.

What is the point of this? He would spend hours and hours doing this and never listen to them there either, duh!

This reminds me of years and years ago when I used to dub soundtracks on to cassette tapes from movies which I had recorded with a reel-to-reel off TV, editing out all the non-musical parts. This would take HOURS and HOURS, so much so that by the time I was finished with this, I would be sick of the whole thing and I would never listen to this music again on the cassette tape EVER.

As far as selling your LP treasures is concerned, this is far too much hassle for what it's worth these days, considering the exorbitant postage rates (especially for overseas) and the "rules" you have to abide by if you are selling them on some place like Ebay or Amazon.

If I took things I wanted to get rid of to a local LP record store here in Vancouver (of which there are several), the people working there have even less knowledge about soundtracks than they do about classical music. You would be lucky to get a dollar each. I tried to sell some classical LPs once on Craigslist and people would e-mail me typical moronic Craigslist responses, saying "I'll give you 25 cents each for them if there are no scratches," and "Can you make a list of these for me?" (Yeah, like I would spend hours making a list if I am going to sell them for a dollar or less each!)

Eventually, I just gave away about 300 LPs (classical, not soundtracks) on Craigslist by putting them in the "free" section. Most of these were of no significant value whatsoever, they had been given to me by a friend who wanted me to sell them for him, which I obviously could not do. Some woman showed up and took them all away in her dinky car, saying her boyfriend was "really into vinyl." I told her, "You came to the right place."

If he's selling CDs on eBay, as he was talking about, he could back up a CD in the amount of time it takes to type the up the listing. Multi-tasking. Problem solved.

I'm truly amazed by all the interest this post has generated and by all the replies
I've begun my lists and initially I will be concentrating on the "big 10". Barry, Bernstein, Goldsmith, Herrmann, Rozsa, Steiner, Tiomkin, North, Waxman and Williams. However not everything I have by these masters will be included I will have to be very selective. There will be some notable exemptions, no Zimmer ( I don't have any anyway) I'm not enthused by much Morricone but I will include some 'one offs'. Carl Davis "King David", David Lee "The Masque of the Red Death" and Stephen Oliver "Lady Jane". I must also include some Brinislau Kaper and some Fernando Velasquez ( he's about the only one of today's composers I can tolerate).
To all those who've expressed an interest in what I've got I have your details and will get back to you shortly.

Thank you guys I didn't intend to start a war ( as A. Hitler said when the shit started to hit the fan)

There's a couple of good stores - pay good money - both based in Reading, got a friend who sold music there he got a decent price.

"Music Man Reading"
"The Sound Machine"

If your not happy with the above prices you could try record fairs - collectors are interested they do pay good rates.

http://www.vip-24.com/

You could phone Backtrackrye who specializes in collections - I'd also be interested if you list anythink here.

Ebay is ok when used at correct times - "when they offer "£3" only payment to whatever sold that's the best time to take advantage".
