..........Well ! , I think you're all wrong !
If you listen really carefully to that Main Title, it's quite obviously .... Edmund Purdom who's singing the title song.
Sheeeshhh!!!.....

Well, that's certainly possible, CH-CD. Purdom had great success singing in THE STUDENT PRINCE in 1954 too.

WAIT A MINUTE!!!

You don't think it might have been Mitchum dubbing for Purdom in THE STUDENT PRINCE, do you?

It certainly sounds like him!

No-no. He was elsewhere on the MGM lot doing all the dubbing for Howard Keel on "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.".....

Ahhhh. Makes sense. Keel could barely sing a note for himself by that time.

But didn't Mitchum also dub Lana Turner's voice in BETRAYED about the same time? Sure sounds like him......or was THAT Tennessee Ernie Ford? Or am I mixing it up with Barbara Stanwyck's voice in EXECUTIVE SUITE---now THAT really sounds like him!

Happy to see this thread revived. This topic came up again at the Classic Horror Film Forum a few months back, with some of the same people (that I cited at the start of the thread) STILL arguing (despite the TEF people disputing this) that Mitchum had performed the main title.

Will this be the soundtrack equivalent of "who shot first, Han or Greedo?" wink

I think the only way it will be settled definitively is if Intrada or FSM puts out a CD

Greg, it's truly a non-issue. It's Tennessee Ernie Ford.

LOL! Ron, I know that. You know that. It's a few of those other people! (Greg - waving arms wildly over his head like Lewis Black, gesticulating in cartoon-like fashion)

never mind about the non issue
The real issue should be some soundtrack company needs to release Cyril Mockridge's score with all the songs --- PLEASE!

What you don't know about this group is that they are all Russian mystics and each is channeling Robert Mitchum during this performance.

Isn't it funny that crazy old John Maher hasn't returned? Isn't it funny?

It has to be Tennessee Ernie singing the title song.
If it had have been Bob Mitchum, much would have been made of that fact by the studio, as an extra selling point.

What's funny about it, Bruce? What is it that I am supposed to be posting here?

Here is what you posted:

"I was never talking about the opening credits. And, when does Mitchum sing the song in the film? Finally, why should anyone care what I think?"

And here was my response:

WHAT? What does this mean:

"So, absolutely nothing definitive regarding who's singing. When I listen to TEF's recording of it, there are differences between how he sings certain words, compared to the title sequence in the film. I'm not convinced it is him, singing in the film. The voice on the film's soundtrack sounds exactly like the voice on Thunder Road, which is Mitchum. But, like I said, nothing definitive."

I have some marbles here, which I'm happy to send you, since you seem to have lost yours."

Now, there seems to be some confusion, doesn't there, John? In one post you compare something to the title sequence in the film, and then in another post you say you were never talking about the opening credits. I think you could have come back and posted something like "Gee, I guess I was wrong about Mitchum, given what I've seen in this thread, and gee I guess I sort of contradicted myself, didn't I?"

But instead, you make another disingenuous Internet-like post.

Except I never said it was Mitchum singing. So why would I post that I was wrong about it being him? All I said was that I haven't read anyting definitive. I haven't. All my searches have found statements that one is singing during opening credits and the other is singing during closing credits, or that Mitchum is singing both, or that TEF is singing both. Nothing definitive. I've found more hits saying it is Mitchum than TEF. That means nothing, I know, which is why I said there's nothing definitive. And yes, I was referring to the difference I heard on that recording vs. the singing during the credits, but I was thinking about the differences between the opening and closing credits, when I wrote that, and made a mistake. I have nothing else to say on it. In fact, I've stopped looking for any more information about it.

Hums the theme from The Twilight Zone.
