The Warner Archive Collection has released "The Outfit" as a made-on-demand DVD. It's in a remastered version, that unlike recent showings on TCM, is finally presented in a widescreen ratio.
"I think I have pieces of glass in my face."
"Die somewhere else."
I just got this the other day and am *very* pleased with the transfer. Great color, blacks, sound, etc. It even has the original theatrical trailer. WB Archive often has deals and I got this for $14.95 and free shipping.
My #2 most-requested DVD; after Farewell, My Lovely.
One disappointing thing about The Outfit is that much of Jerry's score wasn't used. It would've made the funeral scene ("Eddie's Funeral") poignant. However, the film does retain those great Fielding action cues: "Hotel Corridor/Bad Right Ear" is synched with the onscreen action to perfection, a "Quentin Blue" instrumental plays over the end credits, but I'd like to have heard the Steve Gilllette vocal somewhere in the film. I also like "Through the Fields of Summer", but that probably would've dated the movie too much for some. It's the type of song that might accompany sunburst lens flares, long walks shot from a great distance, and other early '70s tricks.
I finally received the new DVD for The Outfit, I had seen it only once on TV years ago. It's quite difficult to get it here in Europe without paying too much. It's still my favorite Fielding score right after The Mechanic - especially in the FSM "reconstruction"! One of Lukas Kendall's greatest achievements IMHO.
I picked up the DVD of 'Point Blank' awhile back. The dissonant score by Mandel blew me away so I finally ordered the FSM cd. This is one of the better releases. Really worth picking up.

Don't you love how that music plays over the DVD menu? Fantastic!
POINT BLANK is another great movie that routinely sells new on Amazon for under six bucks. There IS some justice in this old brown world!
Fielding's (unused) love theme for The Outfit is so beautiful. Heartfelt and poignant. He used (rescued) it also in Junior Bonner and an episode of the Bionic Woman:
The new Warner Brothers DV-R omits a 90 second scene. In the motel room after Macklin slaps the sh!t out of Bett, they calm down and talk about his gold pocket watch and his grandfather, who was a constable in the late 1800s. Instead, there's a cut to Macklin and Bett sitting up in bed. She mentions his grandfather, but we don't get the full impact of the scene when Macklin is at the funeral parlor and refuses to take the watch from the Henry Jones character. Turner Classic Movies does air the cut of the movie with the "grandfather scene" intact, but it is missing from this DVD.
Very cool links chriss, Thanks. That Bionic Woman clip is just gorgeous. Fielding's scores from that need to be on CD. Lukas and co, you need to get on it right away
