"Main Title" and "Charcot's Show" and then "Desperate Case." First part of "Main Title" is used for the acid scene and "The First Step" is heard later in the film when Ripley looks after Jones on the bridge.

Mike M.

For some reason, most people tend to miss that the FREUD track "The First Step" was also used in ALIEN (it fits between the tracks "It's a Droid" and "Parker's Death"). In terms of "Desperate Case" being an alternate take from what is used in the film, I'll take your word for it that that's the case, but I would argue that only the most anal retentive listener would be able to pick up anything that betrays that. For 99.5% of listeners, what you hear on the FREUD CD sounds just like what you hear in the ALIEN movie.

I don't know about that... it's been a couple years since I saw Alien but I remember the cue in the film sounding more menacing then what's on the Freud soundtrack.

This board isn't populated by that 99.5%. It skews heavily toward the .5%… look at any thread about an expanded release of anything if there was an unmentionable or alternate expansion with slightly different content.

Granted, but if someone wanted to get as close as possible to recreating the full ALIEN soundtrack, I would argue that it is better to incorporate these tracks from Varese Sarabande's FREUD soundtrack than to eschew them.

Check out the footage from a High School Drama club's play that expertly uses Goldsmith's score!

Trying to find the original recording of Hanson's Symphony No. 2 (Romantic) that was used for the end credits. Does anyone have info about the recording itself? It would have been recorded pre-1979.

I’m sure I recall reading it was Charles Gerhardt from the Great American Composers album:

Was just revisting the ALIEN Intrada set. Also later was trying to watch the movie with isolated scores on the Anthology Blu ray set.

The Blu ray only has 2 isolated score tracks:

1) Final Theatrical Isolated Score by Jerry Goldsmith
2) Composer's Original Isolated Score by Jerry Goldsmith

The original DVD release had 3 tracks if I recall. The 3rd one was: Alternate Music & Production Sound audio track. I couldnt find the Freud and Hanson pieces on these 2 isolated score tracks or am I looking in the wrong place?

Can anyone help me out here? Thanks!

Only two? That's two more than most video releases have. Alien fans are so spoiled.

That audio track where the on-the-set production audio and alternative music-score cues can only be found in the 1999 DVD, part of the Alien 'Legacy' DVD set.

BTW: Eventhough that production audio track is not complete, it has not been carried over to the 2003 DVD, the 2010 Blu Ray, and the 2019 UHD Blu Ray.

Amer, it's organized a little differently than that, but you have the content basically right. The original DVD has

First "Isolated music score by Jerry Goldsmith, presented for the first time in its original unaltered form, including previously unreleased music"

Second "Isolated alternate music and production audio track, reflecting music changes made in post production and raw audio from the set, including alternate dialogue"

Audio tracks 5 and 6, respectively.

I wish I could source this, but I can't anymore. It's extremely helpful, though:

It's from a Music From The Movies magazine article, circa 1999. Don't ask which, my copies are in an unreachable box at this moment ! Great article, was around 1999.

For my money, the 2-CD Intrada release of Alien is essential. Like Mary Poppins, it's practically perfect in every way. That's all I wanted to say!
