Not paranormal, but I've added the new Netflix show OZARKS to the non-paranormal section. Seen the first season now, and I think it's quite good (except one or two familiar tropes that would fit in the "In films, don't just hate it when..." thread). Sure, it's got the DNA of BREAKING BAD, but it is its own thing, really.
I watched the first disc of THE LAST SHIP. quite possibly the biggest pile of excrement ever spread across our tv screens. A shameless propaganda piece for the US NAVY and US imperialism. Bad guys are Russians and Arab 'terrorists'

yuk! brm
You're absolutely right. It's extremely black/white and -- on the surface -- rightwing-oriented (and I'm at the complete opposite side of the spectrum myself). At the same time, it's done with such overt tools that I find myself liking it. Just as I do films like INDEPENDENCE DAY or AIR FORCE ONE. I've seen the whole show from beginning to end.

Thor, I think you might have mistranslated here. "overt tools" doesn't quite compute in English.

what did you try to express? bruce
'Overt' as in 'obvious'. The series plays out like an Emmerich or Bay movie (not so strange, since Bay is the producer); or something like AIR FORCE ONE. The patriotism is so over-the-top that it becomes an artistic statement in itself. I find aesthetic value in that, even if it's overblown on a thematic level.
I've added the new Netflix show THE MIST to the list, which I assume is based on the Stephen King book (loved the Darabont film adapation, btw).
What a huge disappointment this series was and deservedly canceled. I wouldn't even both. I couldn't even finish it.
It was certainly a disappointment compared to the wonderful Darabont movie, but the premise was ultimately enough for me to want more. But I just discovered today that it was cancelled.

If the person I question was Emmerich (or Verhooven) than I might agree. But Bay is a flag waving soldier groupie. SO , no it isn't tongue-in cheek. b

Not too sure about that. In a film like PAIN & GAIN, for example, he makes fun not only of the style he popularized himself, but also the themes he tends to explore. Whether Bay is a subersive director, is hard to say (I know that there are many who claim that), but he certainly knows how to celebrate the medium; he has plenty of auteur trademarks (both visual and thematic) and the plays with tropes to the extent that they draw attention to themselves. Which makes them about more than just 'surface value'. It's that kind of pleasure I get from a show like THE LAST SHIP -- clearly modelled after Bay's own recipe -- even if I disagree with the patriotic "America! Hell Yeah!" angle.
