I am smack in the middle of watching it right now, and loving it!

True Detective (2014) -- 9.5/10

A brilliant, genius contemporary work of art.

---

If I had to quibble about just one thing about the show, and there really only is one thing I had even the slightest problem with...

One thing that I felt dragged on was Hart's constant inability to stay faithful and his affairs with other women, culminating in his wife getting back at him by using Cohle. I thought there was way too much of that plot thread. I get that it established his character and his shadings and inability to focus on family and what he wants and not knowing who he was and not paying attention to the good thing he had right in front of him and so forth (one of the main themes of his character), but it was just dragged out too much and too long and detracted somewhat from the otherwise superbly lean and swift overall story.

As Above, So Below - 8 / 10

Saw this in the theater last night, and can't remember a creepier found-footage horror movie since the original Paranormal Activity flicks. The story centers around Scarlett (Perdita Weeks) as she searches for the Philosopher's Stone in catacombs below Paris, and by the time the movie ends, I was left feeling like it was all a mix of The Descent, Tomb Raider, and Silent Hill. Make no mistake, this is a horror film like no other - it will both intrigue and haunt you beyond the very end. Highly recommended.

Wait until you see the director brothers' next film, The Coup, which is reportedly just as intense and scary, only in a war and heated civil conflict horror way. I've not seen As Above, So Below, but based on how intense I've heard The Coup is (which is not a "horror" film but more tense exotic thriller) I've wanted to see the film you just reviewed!

Red Cliff (2008) Full International Version - 10/10
Probably the best big war epic to have been made in the last ten years easy. You really have to watch the full 4.5 hour version on Blu Ray to get the full experience. I can't even fathom how this would have been if I watched the butchered US release. My husband had no prior connection to the characters (unlike I did from the Dynasty Warriors video games) and he still found the film to be engrossing from beginning to end.

Big battles let you see the bigger perspective of tactics not just focusing on one or two characters. The film also has a powerful thematic score by Taro Iwashiro that really shines at key moments with themes being used well throughout. And yes the entire film is in Chinese with subtitles but it is so good you will not mind.

Striking Distance (1993) -- 7/10

Fun, silly 90's Bruce Willis action movie set mostly on the river in Pittsburgh where Willis plays a disgraced cop and River Rescue Patrolman trying to solve an old case involving the death of his father and police corruption. A fun movie if you're in the right mood.

Great cast: Willis, Sarah Jessica Parker, Dennis Farina, John Mahoney, Tom Sizemore, Brion James, Andre Braugher, Timothy Busfield, Tom Atkins, Robert Pastorelli.

Free Fall (2013) - 6/10
My husband wanted to watch this German gay romance. It was not bad, but also very typical of the average gay romance. Main character is in the closet, falls in love with another man, lies to everyone about it, things go to shit. It is very typical German film style with longer takes and slower pace, along with a non-ending. It was interesting to follow the characters because they were well-developed but it felt like it could have been a bit more interesting with better execution.

Les Miserables with Jackman, Crowe, Hathaway, et al. I have had the original cast recording since it was released as well as the 20th Anniversary recording(and the laserdisc presentation of that performance as well). Enjoyed the hell out of this movie, although, Amanda Seyfrid was better in Mama Mia. Hathaway's performance was definitely Oscar worthy. Crowe was better than expected as the dogged Javert. A movie that will get repeated viewings.

hey DP! ... actually I think Hart's behavior in that respect was important in contrasting the differing moral foundations of the 2 characters and their emphasis on the value of truth. Glad you enjoyed the series in general. smile -G-

Lucy. Even allowing for it being a Luc Besson flick, it's weird how a movie predicated on increased brain power could turn out to be so forehead-slappingly stupid. However, it's so idiotic it's actually fascinating - and at least someone finally put Scarlett Johansson in her own action movie. Think we could get one with her starring as Black Widow next time, however? 4/10.

Angels of Sex (El sexo de los ángeles) (2012) - 8/10
Having fun watching Spanish movies on Netflix though sadly streaming doesn't allow for me to turn on Spanish subtitles to get the best learning out of it. This was a very interesting film that explored romance in a way that felt very real to me and also would challenge a lot of people. This brings new meaning to the idea of a love triangle and explores the fluid nature of human sexuality. Álvaro Cervantes really is the draw of the film and is what makes the love triangle so believable.

Baby Boom (1987) revisit -- 8/10

Charming 80's warmhearted comedy from Charles Shyer/Nancy Meyers, who would later go on to deliver Father of the Bride, What Women Want, It's Complicated etc. Hadn't seen this movie in nearly 20 years, since I was a little boy, but just remembered it made me feel good, and it still does. It has a light touch, a warm heart, and gentle laughs. My favorite Diane Keaton role; she effortlessly carries the movie and really shines alongside supporting players Sam Shepard, James Spader, Harold Ramis, Pat Hingle and Sam Wanamaker.

Continuing on the theme of big-city folk fish-out-of-water in the country warm-hearted comedies from the 80's...

Funny Farm (1988) -- 9/10

Classic, near-perfect 1980's comedy. Chevy Chase has never been better in this, my favorite of his films. The movie is hilarious and sweet and buoyed by an effervescent score by Elmer Bernstein. Wonderful!

Yes, a sweet charming movie. Kinda losses steam near the end but other wise a fun ride. Madolyn Smith was one beautiful girl too.

Continuing on the theme of classic comedies from the 80's wherein a man and woman find themselves in a series of epically slapstick comic misadventures...

The Money Pit (1986) -- 7/10

Never seen it before! Mostly hilarious, but only once Tom Hanks and Shelley Long arrive at the house from hell. Before that (and pretty much whenever they leave the house) the movie stalls for me. But when the two of them are within the walls of the house or anywhere on its property, this film was pure comedy gold and some of the funniest stuff I've ever seen.

Continuing on the theme of Tom Hanks comedies from the 1980's...

Dragnet (1987) -- 4/10

Mostly an embarrassment for all involved, although Tom Hanks and Dan Aykroyd use their considerable comedic star power to keep the movie afloat as much as possible, with some very funny moments from both stars. Aside from Hanks and Aykroyd however -- and a droll Dabney Coleman as well as Harry Morgan from the original TV show -- the movie is terrible, and plays like one of the worst Police Academy sequels you wish you'd never seen. I suspect that might have been the point, that the movie was intentionally played so excruciatingly goofy and lame as an homage to excruciatingly goofy and lame L.A. cops-and-robbers tales, but that doesn't really make this movie work necessarily. And Christopher Plummer, really? Yikes. The less said about you, sir, the better. Some very good comedy to be found in this movie, but what a terrible movie to find good comedy in.

Continuing on the theme of Tom Hanks comedies from the 1980's...

Turner & Hooch (1989) -- 2/10

One of Hanks' worst comedies, an unfunny "comedy"/non-thrilling "thriller" that was dull and (maybe not at the time) clichéd. Terrible, terrible stabs at humor. Oh, the dog rolls over and farts in the police station and all the cops smell it and make faces and one has to open a window and they try to continue a conversation but the smell is so bad they can't continue hahaha...roll eyes Basically an early precursor to the awful Charles Grodin Beethoven family films but with more cops and gunfights. Hanks, Reginald Veljohnson, and Craig T. Nelson couldn't buoy this inept attempt at fun, with a noteably atrocious over-the-top Randy Newman-esque bouncy comedy score.

Continuing on the theme of Tom Hanks comedies from the 1980's...

Big (1988) -- 7/10

Tom Hanks' winning, first Oscar-nominated performance carries this warm-hearted and smart comedy and offers first sight of the astounding depths of his acting capabilities. I didn't care for Elizabeth Perkins as the harried love interest -- not crazy about her as an actress and didn't like her character. Robert Loggia and John Heard were excellent however, as was Mercedes Ruehl as Hanks' mom, although I never understood why she wasn't freaking out more about her missing child. I guess it's not that kind of movie? Anyway, it's a sweet movie that holds up over time and offers critical insight into losing the child we once were as we grow into adults.
