THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD (1938) 9/10

I watched this undisputed classic of the Golden Age of Hollywood for the umpteenth time again this morning -- in HD on Blu-ray, of course. I find it a perfect movie to watch on a lazy, sunny Sunday morning with a nice breakfast.

I don't give it a 10/10 score only because of some corny humorous and heroic elements that were too juvenile even in 1938, but otherwise, this is a blueprint of how such a romantic adventure/action movie should be done -- even these days.

If only current filmmakers would stick closer to the formula so expertly handled in this movie with modern fare and leave out the crude audience pandering that makes, for the most part, current movies such travesties of the artform.

The Imitation Game - 9/10
Excellent film, with some great performances, dialogue that keeps you on the edge of your seat not wanting to miss any of it and judicious use of war time news reel. Great recreations of what I imagine the "radio factory" would actually have been like, plus the additional atmosphere of the school and the 50s police station. And believable, conflicted characters in the supporting cast in addition to the leads. Desplat's score added to it in the right places without becoming intrusive.

The Transporter Refuelled - 3/10
Not great in any respect. If I had to pick a good point it would be the respect paid to the working girls in the script. The fights were unconvincing (one or two of them Jackie Chan-lite in the use of props) and the score in my memory was generic and pretty predictable. The Stath did well to get out of this one.

Hummingbird - 6/10
Speaking of which, I think my exploration of his body of work might have reached what I believe the economists call "diminishing marginal utility". There was nothing especially wrong with this film, but I derived less enjoyment from it, having seen much of it before in other variations of the same character.

Love this movie since childhood... have not seen it in decades, so the last time was on "low-res" regular TV some long, long time ago.... the idea to watch this in full HD on BluRay is very appealing. :-)

1973 day of the jackal is a great film watched it last night and I liked Edward fox played a great role as the assassin good plots all the way threw fox 1 step ahead of the police/guards, government, till he gets sloppy at the end, would give the film a 8/9 film is a little grainy picture wise but was still enjoyable. didn't watch this film for at least 15 years. so a good watch.

If you haven't seen it in decades, then getting it on Blu-ray is a real no-brainer. The Blu-ray transfer is excellent, on a par with THE WIZARD OF OZ and GONE WITH THE WIND.

And the last time I looked on Amazon, the Blu-ray is only $10.

Supergirl. I hadn't seen it since I was a little, little kid. My dad refused to rent it a second time when I wanted to shortly thereafter.

I recently bought the Superman DVD box set and watched all five of them. Feeling nostalgic, I rented his cousin's movie this past weekend. I can understand why my dad didn't want to rent it a second time. The movie is laughably bad. It makes Superman III look slightly less awful. 3/10

On the other hand, it was laughably bad. I love laughably bad. And, unlike Superman III, it's not a bad comedy masquerading as a Superman movie. It's just a poorly written movie with often terrible visual effects, plot holes galore, a damn good score, and a newcomer giving it her all. As a piece of "so bad it's good" cinema, I give it an 8/10.

I just bought the Superman blu ray box and also bought Supergirl today as it was $5 and has a commentary. I remember not really eating it but wanted to rewatch.

That's good to hear. The movie was regularly on TV when I was a kid, and I watched it several times back then. Have not seen it since.

Last night I watched my second favourite Ealing film (after Dunkirk), The Night My Number Came Up 1955, it's not a comedy, but a delicious thriller, here's a synopsis from Amazon:

At a fashionable dinner party in Hong Kong a pilot is coaxed into revealing details of a dream in which eight persons take off from Bangkok in a Dakota bound for Tokyo and crash in the Japanese mountains. Amongst those listening is Air Marshal Hardie who is due to fly to Tokyo the next day. Hardie initially dismisses the dream because he is scheduled to fly out in a Liberator, but as Hardie arrives at the airport he discovers that the Liberator has developed mechanical problems and has been replaced by a Dakota. When, just before the flight is due to depart, two soldiers board the plane making a complement of eight, Hardie fears that the Dream may be coming true and he is destined to die.

A great cast headed by Michael Redgrave, & it really ratchets up the tension towards the end, can we die if someone dreams it? Beautifully written & acted, & who cares if you can see the strings holding up the model aeroplane. I suppose it's a bit of a precursor to The Twilight Zone really. 9/10

I can't see a DVD for America, but I see you can get it in HD from Amazon Instant Video.

Thanks! I've never heard of this movie before, but I see it gets four stars in Maltin's Classic Movie Guide and since I have Amazon Instant, I'm definitely going to watch this.

The Good Dinosaur (2015) - 8/10
A little strange because of how they decided to make it into a western and have talking dinosaurs but humans who are sniveling dogs. But the detailed environments are gorgeous and I really felt for the characters by the end. Some tears were shed during certain scenes as part of the finale. Musically, I wasn't very impressed by the soundtrack before I watched the movie but now I really got a feel for it thanks to the emotional connection I had with the film and the themes stuck in my head by the end credits such that I soaked them up as the credits rolled.

Batman VS Superman Extended Cut - 7/10
There is a lot of setup in the first two thirds of the film and some would say it was slow but I really liked how things were properly set up for the finale. I really got pulled into the universe and enjoyed the parts that played off of Man of Steel themes. For what they were trying to do, another movie taking these characters and putting them into the modern political climate, it was done well. Musically I was surprised to connect with various motifs and themes throughout, including the psycho violins for Luthor. Sure a lot of the music was overly noisy but I thought it gave the film some character.

Well, I just got through watching it on Amazon Prime in HD. Excellent print. I'm surprised it's not out on Blu-ray because it pretty much looked as if shot in the sixties rather than fifties.

Anyway, as for the movie itself, while I thought it very good and tense in its final minutes, I also thought it rather laid its premise on a bit thick. It was all veeery British, which was fine though a bit dated, but I enjoyed seeing it. I never heard or read of it before and I loved seeing the familiar faces in the cast, especially a brief appearance by Percy Herbert. It was a bit unnerving though to see a face that I eventually realized was George Rose. Knowing his ultimate fate in life made the part he had in this a bit creepy. My rating 7.5/10.

I agree, I think Good Dinosaur has a lot of charm, and the score works very well in the picture. Those riffs on classic western scores are a lot of fun, and the themes for the adventure in nature are good as well. The animation details for nature are pretty astonishing in this movie, but I think hardly anyone saw it. It is not a top list Pixar title for story, but the animation and score aspect are top quality.

My annual viewing of The Wolfman (2010) 8/10. I think it's better than the original (which I saw a week ago), production design & photography are stunning, it's one of the best looking Blu-rays I own (I know TG is also a fan). If the new Mummy film is anything like as good as this I'll have no complaints.

Jaws 2 - Pretty good. Not as good as #1 but the director did a good job emulating Spielberg`s skill at pre-event character development.

In the special features, the director spoke about showing more of the shark since Jaws had already essentially revealed it at the end. He felt they had to show more in #2. I agree... but only if your effects stand up! I cringed/groaned when the shark deformed its grin against the side of the sailboat... uggh. Should have shown less!

But it was still a solid 7.
