Concord Music BUYS Varese Sarabande 2/7/18

Think Concord would be more willing to give allow a release of the Spock to Spock track than Varese?

What is Spock to Spock?

I think it's the ONE AND ONLY missing cue from the INTO DARKNESS: DELUXE EDITION.

I think it's the ONE AND ONLY missing cue from the INTO DARKNESS: DELUXE EDITION.

Which is kind of sad since the music that was used during that scene wound up being Leonard Nimoy's final onscreen role. It's crazy looking back at all the Star Trek music I've collected that I have ALL THE MUSIC used for Spock's character... except for his very last scene.

It's like having all the puzzle pieces and you suddenly realize you're missing the very last piece.

I watched 'In the Flesh', episode 4, season 5, from Voyager yesterday and when Chakotay is surrounded by fake Starfleet officers I definitely heard a reprise of of the species 8472 theme that Jay Chattoway wrote for the Scorpion episodes!!

So post-Ron Jones the composers DID re-use some of their theme sometimes.
Could anyone explain the reason behind this? Why did the producers allow this all of a sudden?

Why not? It's a distinct theme for a distinct alien lifeform. If the composers wouldn't reuse themes a part of characterisation is lost. I'm always glad watching Klingons marching off to war with Jerry Goldsmith's Fifth-Theme (unfortunately Bell and McCarthy didn't used it; especially in DS9 it would have been glorious but they had their own style). Same for the Borg: I was happy when David Bell used the style from Goldsmith's First Contact for Voyager's "Dark Frontier". Best example: James Bond - 007 fighting crooks without the Bond-Theme... unimaginable!

Btw.: my wishes for the Star Trek Fan-Box: what's left from "The Way of The Warrior", "The Visitor" and "Sacrifice of Angels" (all Deep Space Nine).

It wasn't all of a sudden, it happened gradually over the course of DS9 and Voyager. Jay Chattaway had a theme for the Dominion War he reprised fairly often, for example.

It is so amazing that LLL has given us so much ST music. Thank you LLL!

But it is sad that this set will be the end of the golden age of ST music releases because there is so much good music left.

You make it sound like I disagree with the move te re-use a theme. I do not. On the contrary. Indeed, characterization IS lost but since the producers where against that sort of thing I found it to be curious all of a sudden.

It wasn't my intention to blame you for disliking themes. I don't care whether you like themes or not. And I've never read, that the Trek-producers didn't want the reuse of themes. It's right, that Berman for example wanted to have as much new music for every episode as possible. But McCarthy reused his Picard-Theme quiet often and his battle music from "Generations" two times in slight different versions after the movie had been released ("The Die Is Cast" and "The Way Of The Warrior", both Deep Space nine episodes).

To be fair, Chattaway did modify his 8472 theme in "Into the Flesh" so it wasn't an exact copy of the original. Maybe he got away with it because of that.

My one request would be the final cue of DS9's "A Simple Investigation", when Odo says good-bye to Arrissa. Lovely work there by Dennis McCarthy.

The pressure to lose the themes and to make the music less front-and-center really took hold around season 4 — 5 of TNG. You hear McCarthy phase out his Captain Picard theme, and later his Enterprise fanfare. Berman didn't like themes because he thought it sounded like tracking (this is from several sources, including the various TNG box sets). Indeed, if there is a criticism I have of some of those better latter-season TNG episodes is that there are times when they needed greater musical support than the composers were allowed to provide.

Over the course of the early seasons of DS9 and Voyager, the restrictions gradually eased over time as the series started requiring more dramatic impact from its music* — this is particularly noticeable in DS9 as the Dominion War started heating up — hence Chattaway's Dominion War fanfare — but also in the more emotional moments, as McCarthy had several stand-out music scores in DS9 (e.g. “The Visitor”). Voyager was reportedly conceived as being somewhat more musically aggressive than the previous series, which would become more rewarding over the course of the series.

* — This is something that seems to happen from time to time with a television show's music; the producers want to avoid making the music too prominent until they realize how effective dramatically music can be. See Battlestar Galactica Redux, among others.

You'ne never read that the Trek-producers didn't want the reuse of themes. Well, I did. Dennis McCarthy was told to not use the Picard theme again by one of the produces around season 3 when he employed it so he gradually stopped using it. He said in several interviews and I think he also said it in during the conversation with Jay Chattaway, Ron Jones and Jeff Bond on the season 5 remastered Blu Ray of TNG.

Hey @Lukas

My only request is the missing cue from "Hard Time" that I thought would have been on this most recent DS9 Box Set.

Star Trek DS9 - "Hard Time" - S4E19 - From 00:29:20 to 00:31:50

(AKA when Sisko benches O'Brien, O'Brien chews out Bashir, and then argues with Ee'char all the way back to his quarters)

I don't understand why this wasn't included, but I would request that it possibly included on the next one that's done? Or as a digital download? Something? It's literally like only one of three tv/film score tracks left that I cannot find anywhere.

Just one, 2 minute track. Then I'll be an extremely happy Trekkie.

Thanks for doing great work on these releases La-La Land, much appreciated.

Hey Lukas,

1) Thank you for your hard work through the years. Very much appreciated. I’m a fan!

2) Thank you for including the VERY obscure TNG Trailer Music cue (from the later seasons) in the 50th Anniversary Box Set. I was the one who requested it (thinking that surely it would not be included.) I was tickled pink that it made the cut!
