RIOTENGINE:

Do you think SATAN BUG will sell for less than $11.49 in the future?

Hi Dragon. Now that the Kino-Lorber sale has ended, a bunch of their blu-rays have gone back up in price. You can't really go wrong for the current preorder price. I'm pretty sure Satan Bug will only go up, and not down.

And there's this positive news...

Kino Lorber have detailed four upcoming Blu-ray releases: The Vikings, After the Fox, Donovan's Brain, and The Black Sleep.

The Vikings

Synopsis: Hollywood legends Kirk Douglas, Tony Curtis, Ernest Borgnine and Janet Leigh dazzle in this epic chronicle of brutal rivalry and blood-thirsty ambition. Roaring through the 9th century with powerful performances and 'brilliant visual drama" (Cue), The Vikings is a riveting "spectacle of have-at-'em action" (Los Angeles Examiner)!

Bitter hatred divides two brothers. Prince Einar (Douglas) is the son and heir of a savage Viking chieftain. Prince Eric (Curtis) is his unknowing half-brother, the bastard off-spring of Einar's father and an English queen. When the Vikings kidnap a princess (Leigh), her beauty inflames the desires of both men, forcing a bloody duel that decides their fate... and the future of the English throne.

Special Features:
"A Tale of Norway" - Featurette with Richard Fleischer
Trailer Gallery
STREET DATE: MARCH 8, 2016.

After the Fox

Synopsis: This wildly funny farce gives the comic genius of Peter Sellers free reign as he assumes several wacky personalities, each one funnier than the last! Superb direction by Vittorio De Sica (The Bicycle Thief) and a sparkling original script by Neil Simon (The Goodbye Girl) make After the Fox an absolute "must-see" (Leonard Maltin).

Millions of dollars worth of gold bullion is on its way from Cairo to an unknown Italian destination. There is only one criminal mastermind capable of stealing it: Aldo Vanucci (Peter Sellers), also known as "the Fox." Aldo devises the perfect plan to seize the gold: Posing as a flamboyant film director, he casts an aging, egotistical film star (Victor Mature) and his own voluptuous sister (Britt Ekland) in a fake film about a gold theft! But the action really heats up when the boat with the real gold arrives.

Special Features:
"Trailers From Hell" with Larry Karaszewski
Trailers for "After the Fox", "What's New Pussycat?" and "The Party"
STREET DATE: MARCH 22, 2016.

Donovan's Brain

Synopsis: Prepare to be scared senseless with this shocking horror-fest that's bursting with "startling special effects" (Los Angeles Daily News). Nancy Davis (Hell Cats of the Navy) stars with Lew Ayres ("Salem's Lot") in this "terrifying film experience" (Los Angeles Examiner) that'll blow your brain and fry your mind!

Dr. Patrick Corey (Ayres) has a hideous hobby - he keeps brains alive! So when the brain of dead murderer W.H. Donovan falls into his possession, bringing him back becomes his obsession. But the cunning cranium has its own agenda - to control the doctor's mind through telepathic messages! Now, Cory's wife (Davis) must put a stop to the devious brain before it destroys the man she loves - and her in the process!

Special Features:
Audio Commentary by Film Historian Richard Harland Smith
"Trailers From Hell" with Joe Dante
Trailer Gallery
STREET DATE: MARCH 22.

The Black Sleep

Synopsis: Basil Rathbone heads the cast as Sir Joel Cadman, who uses a mind-controlling drug known as "The Black Sleep" to place brilliant scientist Gordon Ramsay (Herbert Rudley) under his control. Cadman needs Ramsay's intellect and expertise to aid him in a series of mysterious, covert experiments involving brain transplants. Evidently Cadman has already endured a few failures, as witness the present feeble-minded state of his former "volunteer" Mungo (Lon Chaney Jr.). Ramsay and heroine Laurie Munro (Patricia Blake) finally learn what Cadman is up to when they stumble upon a dungeon full of his previous "experiments," including a demented, emaciated man (John Carradine) and a blank-eyed monstrosity (Tor Johnson). In his last mainstream film, Bela Lugosi essays the thankless role of Cadman's mute servant.

Ha, I still have the old Rykodisc of that soundtrack, The Hollies & Peter Sellers. Not a great Sellers film, but I enjoyed it. Victor Mature taking the micky out of his tough-guy onscreen persona is the best thing in it. And it's a new 2015 HD transfer. If it gets a region B release I'll buy it.

FINALLY! I've waited my whole life to get this on American video, since the day that I saw it in the theater in 1971. And kudos to Kino Lorber for not using the awful British DVD artwork:

and instead going with this:

which of course is derived from the fabulous original British theatrical poster:

The American theatrical poster went with another, equally exciting, depiction:

WHEN EIGHT BELLS TOLL is, like most films released in the U.S. by Cinerama Releasing Corp, somewhat of an "orphan film" when it comes to home video release. CRC did not hold the copyright on its releases, and as a result, video rights are scatted to the four winds, with video labels having to track down and make individual deals with the various production companies involved in the films.

WHEN EIGHT BELLS TOLL was one of two screenplays that producers Jerry Gershwin and Elliott Kastner had purchased from author Alistair MacLean. The other script, also based on a MacLean novel, was WHERE EAGLES DARE, a World War II drama produced by MGM and released in 1968. Gershwin and Kastner had a unique partnership by which they found and developed properties entirely at their own expense. Kastner was based in London and Gershwin in Los Angeles. It's likely that Kino Lorber has struck a deal with the Gershwin-Kastner company Winkast Films and/or Glen Alden Corp., which had been authorized by Winkast to produce and enter into distribution agreements for WHEN EIGHT BELLS TOLL.

Funny, I was just thinking about that film and when it will be released on Blu-Ray.
Just as "Where eagles dare", I love this one for its visuals. The wonderful sets and land-/ seascapes are a feast for the eyes. The story I still don't get, as with all Alistair Mac Lean stories. Ships vanish but are the destroyed because they witnessed the sinking of one gold transporter or were there several? Who cares, it looks fantastic.

Now can we finally have the soundtrack?!!!! My "Captain Nemo and the underwater city" is feeling lonely.

I ordered a DVD movie from Kino (my first order with them) which was released on Feb. 16. How long do they typically take for delivery? I tried sending an inquiry to their customer service email with my order number but so far no response. Anyone have experience with them?
