Oblivion 2-5

This film reminded me of a 70's sci fi "B" flick with it's simplistic plot, and small cast. Nothing wrong with that if you can write engaging characters. Here however, there's no dynamic personalities, or character development to speak of. I really didn't care about any of them.

Without divulging anything, the plot twist was pretty ridiculous as well. I'm sure aliens could come up with better way's of eliminating the human race. The ending reminded me a tad bit of another well known alien invasion movie. The only thing that kept my attention were the two rather attractive actresses, or I wouldn't have made it to the end.

Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes. Not brilliant, but better than the rise of the place. 7/10.

No a movie, but I'm halfway through the DVD set of, Ken Burns: The Civil War. Totally fantastic, I have to pay close attention to see who's fighting for what side, the carnage at each battle is really shocking. I'll watch another couple of hours tonight.

Love that, too. The Civil War has always been my favorite war, so to speak, and Burns' epic docu feature is a modern classic. The oft-repeated folk and popular songs of the time (specially arranged and recorded for the series) imprint themselves on one's memory. This is how historical documentaries should be done: character-driven.

I was going to start watching it this week. i'd heard it was excellent.

I recently watched a documentary about the California Gold Rush which was very interesting. Not sure who produced it, maybe the history channel?

The Rise
Brit revenge/robbery film about wannabee gangster/thieves, featuring a cast who must have had two weeks filming off Game of thrones.
Same old same old blueprint since Ritchie made a mostly poor genre a lot worse.
4 out of ten.

The best thing i can say is the bit-part girlfriend of the main guy was the most believable of the whole cast. Played by Vanessa Kirby. Never heard of her but she had good lines and improved every scene she was in.

The Squirrel Memorandum...

I'm sorry - The Quiller Memorandum. Let's say 7/10 on average. A miscast George Segal did his best but didn't cut it as the "bitten-eared alley cat" of the books, and cutting the (admittedly realistic) inconsequentia of conversation out of Pinter's script would have tightened the running time considerably.

Plus points were the great direction and photography, together with some wonderful character actors. What drags the rating up from about 4/10 are the two 10/10 aspects (still with me?) of John Barry's pitch perfect music and the leg-collapsingly lovely Senta Berger.

Cosmos (1980)- 5-5

I saw Cosmos when it originally aired and recently revisited the series. It's remains an engaging program. No one can explain science better than Carl Sagan.

Cosmos (2014) 2-5

Never warmed up to this updated series. Hated the cheap animation and Neil deGrasse Tyson spent to much time on the biographies of scientists, instead of actually discussing science.

StarTalk (2015) 0-5

I just find this show cringe worthy. Though I usually find informal entertainment shows cringe worthy to begin with. I've just come to the conclusion I don't like Neil deGrasse Tyson the entertainer. Love him in lectures and speeches but not like this.

Bill Nye, the Science Guy (1993) 3-5

I realize the idea behind this series was to make science fun and interesting for kids. But it was a bit to silly for my tastes. Never saw the series in it's original run, so maybe I would have enjoyed it more then instead of now.

I'll have to watch the original Cosmos. I wasn't very interested in the remake when it aired. I barely got through the first episode.

Heavenly Creatures (NZ 1994), 9/10 - Absolutely smashing teenage angst drama, much more intriguing and memorable than anything else I've seen by Peter Jackson. I am a big fan of Melanie Lynskey and can't quite believe that after her mesmerizing performance here (she was 16, and this was her first film) her career didn't take off like Kate Winslet's did (who is just as good). OTOH I'm very glad that Lynskey is doing so well (indie films, Togetherness) *now*. Intense, truly terrifying drama.

Inside Out. Wonderful, and proof you don't need to have villains in an animated movie. Plus how can you not want to give Sadness a hug and go "There, there, it'll be all right"? 10/10. And poor Bing Bong.

Just finished the Blu-ray of Parker, you can't beat a bit of the Stath. It goes like a steam train, lots of action, & it looks great 8/10.

Mission Impossible 5.
It is refreshingly, surprisingly good.
No comics, no super powers.
Well written and well directed action picture.
It is in my top 5 of the year so far.

8 out of 10

Enemy (2013) 9/10

Intriguing thought provoking doppelganger thriller starring Jake Gyllenhaal (twice obviously) that holds its own till its unsettling last frames and well after the end credits roll. Definitely one to revisit.

Maggie (2015) 5/10

What an odd choice of project for Arnie and as far as zombie movies go, this one didn't stand out from the herd. Couldn't he have guest starred on Walking Dead instead?

Chappie (2015) 3/10

Like watching jar jar binks play lead in the Robocop remake of the week; I truly can't wait for the next Alien movie to take place in Johannesburg. roll eyes

Wanted (2008) 7/10

Basically the Matrix light with no machines and philosophical discussion, but a much hotter Trinity. Mindless comic book action but very entertaining and some great eye candy sequences.

Just checked into this because it sounded like Dostoyevsky's novel, "The Double", which I read a few months ago. Coincidentally, a film version of "The Double" has also been recently released - also 2013. Would be interesting to watch both films together to compare and contrast. I was disappointed with the novel, but I'm not sure it wasn't the translation that I should blame.

Yep - saw this recently. A good adaptation of the Stark/Westlake book. I might have said 7/10 but wouldn't cavil about 8/10.

Interesting, I'll need to check out that movie as well. "Enemy" appears to be based on José Saramago's "The Double", to add to the confusion. big grin

I wonder if this would make a great double bill. wink

Paul - 3.5/10 - Ah, i wanted to like it. A Pegg/Frost script and they star. But it feels like their sensibilities have been Americanized. Or maybe they just wrote a not very good script. Lots of Saturday night Live "comedians" which is never really a good sign for a comedy. Lots of sci-fi/fantasy references bunged in there regardless of whether they make sense or not, in a "hey look at me!" kind of way. Just quite dull and free of laughs.

Tomorrowland 4.5-5

On a side note I just read Disney decided not take a loss on Tomorrowland. Perhaps it (at least) made it's money back.
