After a tough loss with Jacob deGrom on the mound against Stephen Strasburg in the first game of the series against the Nationals, Matt Harvey, once again, stepped up to shut out the Nats last night. It was Harvey vs. Max Scherzer. The marquee pitching matchup last night. Scherzer at this point appears to be the new Nationals ace. Harvey did not have his good fastball and he only had 3 strikeouts in the game, but he used all of the other tools in his toolbox to shut down a good offense. For last nights game, Daniel Murphy was moved to third (where he played years ago in the minors) and young Dilson Herrera was brought up to play second with Flores remaining at shortstop. Herrera came to the Mets from the Pirates in the Marlon Byrd trade. Flores has been horrible at short as I've gone on about, and last night was no different. Herrera executed some crisp double plays at second showing how it's done. Without getting these key outs and shutting off a potential rally the whole pattern of the game can change as was shown the other night with deGrom on the mound. deGrom was sailing along against the Nats early, Flores made another error, and the game changed dramatically from that point on. Plus, when the innings get extended, so do the pitch counts. It's becoming particularly interesting to watch the ways that Harvey goes about frustrating Bryce Harper, one of the best hitters in all of baseball. Harper has become so frustrated in trying to hit Harvey's assortment of pitches that he actually tried to bunt against him last night. The Mets scored only one run off Scherzer until later in the game but as it turned out the Mets pitching made that one run hold up in the victory. Mets closer Familia was called upon in the 8th by Mets manager Terry Collins to get a five out save and once again Familia shut the door. Familia has been dominant so far out of the bullpen. Matt Harvey is now 5-0 on the young season. Scherzer has an era under 2 and so far this season has been brilliant with his new team but he still has only one victory so far this season to show for it.

It will run so long as there is a game called baseball. Yankees win the first two in Fenway. A-Rod wins the first game with the first pinch-hit HR of his career which tied him with Mays as well. His past is always going to be there and it will keep him out of the HOF, but so long as the guy just plays and does his job it's time to move on from that unless he commits another transgression whereupon all bets are off. Second game they win and Betances shows why he is on his way to being the Rivera of this era. Tomorrow alas *another* Sunday night game. Honestly, I would like to see ESPN banned from doing *any* Yankees-Red Sox or Yankees-Mets games on Sunday nights for a whole year.
