Something I've been meaning to ask regarding English football announcers. I'm going to generalize, so please be kind. It seems that the announcer or "play-by-play" as they say here--usually has a "proper" English accent whereas the guy who does the analysis, or "color commentary" as they say here is permitted to speak in a Scottish, Irish, or northern English accent (if he's a former player). Is this arrangement a policy for the Beeb or Sky or every other broadcaster? Hah - that's pretty much how it works out. The commentator is generally a career journalist/reporter who traditionally would have ironed out any regional accent in order to fit in with the norm on TV or radio. That's less of an issue nowadays, as shown by one of the younger radio guys, John Murray, having a pronounced north-eastern accent The pundit is invariably a former player, 99% of whom are drawn from the ranks of the working class, where regional accents abound. All the commentators are pretty good at what they do, whereas the quality of the pundit varies. Some of the better ones of the latter include: Pat Nevin - a great speaker and football thinker if you can follow his Scottish accent. Can't remember if he does much game stuff - I've usually heard him interviewed on the radio (BBC Five Live) where he's great. Andy Townsend - an Englishman who played for the Rep of Ireland due to family qualification, and who's a sharp guy when it comes to the round ball game. Clarke Carlisle - former Leeds player (for about 10 minutes) and luminary in the footballers' trade union, the PFA, who's very good when he sticks to football and doesn't get sidelined into race and politics. The latter is of course important but out of place during a game...

sory kev thought playin tmro and cdnt remember who they playing. Woulda said Liverpool win though. i waz only discussing with a liverpool mate this week just how shit Glen johnson and joe cole now are. And that it wouldnt be long before johnson was playin with cole at villa - thats about their level. last stop before boro or wolves! And they both score!! anyway bit off with my west ham prediction but thats ok. pleasantly chuffed with that result. espec as 1 up before they went to ten men in last 15.mins. great result for leeds. even better than i thought. chelsea looking strong against sundrland but finding it hard to break them down and get that first goal.

i hear the sound of Roy Budd opening the case to his baton! probably for Sunderland. but hammers n liverpool had good results after lean times. perhaps, though, Roy and Jim should look to Tgs Leeds for his SAS theme?

another good evening for Hammers, liverpool and er...man utd! west ham rode their luck a bit, but played well considering not full strength side. Nice overhead kick by Andy Carrol which led to Nolans equaliser.

BT Sports had the footy rights tonight (and tomorrow , I think). Watched da Pool hang on at 10 man Leicester. It wasn't pretty. But another 3 points away from the drop zone Win our next two home games (Sunderland and Basle) and things will seem a whole lot rosier!
