Any love for the Gerhardt Citizen Kane highlights cd?

It's really a crime that it did not sell well for you, especially considering how sales are doing on other titles of yours. There are some composers who should be no-brainer purchases and Herrmann should be one of them. I know that low sales for Obsession will most likely deter you from other great scores by him -- after all, it is a business -- but I hope you reconsider visiting another score.

Well...I'M fretting over it because it's really bizarre imo. Obsession has everything a person could want or envision in a Bernard Herrmann score...only now it's been rerecorded with a great sound. It's hard for me to imagine a fan of Vertigo or Journey to the Center of the Earth not wanting that CD.

It's also nice Tadlow DIDN'T do the obvious: Psycho and Vertigo have pretty darn awesome McNeely recordings imo. So does Ghost and Mrs. Muir (Bernstein).

The McNeely rerecordings are generally good (his Psycho is the only one that nails the timing IMHO), except The Twilight Zone. Just a mess that suffers from alternatively being sluggish, inaccurate to the source (why is that redundant part of Walking Distance's coda there?), to just being in the wrong key (the 1959 opening title).

Ouch, I love that recording. I must say, however, that I feel the original recording that was played on the Twilight Zone episode "Little Girl Lost" is easily the best one. Bernard really pushed the envelope there. He was a great composer, and whoever conducted that episode (might have been him) did it with plenty of nuance and care.

One of the worst suggestions I've heard here in a while. Those recordings are very, well, bad.

-Joshua

You are very, well, right. Great sound, lousy performances. Herrmann revisiting his own work was always disapointing.

I haven't heard those recordings yet, but have been told his conducting method became more and more lazy and harder to follow as he became older. To me that's especially sad because Bernard really wanted to be a world class conductor.

I just found the Varese Citizen Kane for a decent price (I already have the Chandos and Gephardt and like specific things about each). I'm really interested in hearing McNeely's take on it, as I admire his Vertigo and Psycho (not as wild about his Torn Curtain...I think most casual fans would be better off with the Salonen suite for that).

To me the only Ghost and Mrs. Muir (as far as complete) is the Bernstein recording I love it.

The Stromberg Mysterious Island and Fahrenheit are top of the line imo. I like the Five Fingers/Snows combo, but kind of bum out over the flat production. Really good performances there...I probably need to hear the original recording of Snows to make a firmer judgement.

The Bernstein Ghost and Mrs Muir is a great listen but it is far from complete and really can't compare with the original tracks...

Paul, could you help me with a recommendation of an original recording of Ghost and Mrs. Muir? I didn't even know the Bernstein was incomplete duh!

I do have the blu ray with the isolated score track...heaven.

That's the first I've heard about the Blu-ray having an isolated score.

As for a CD of the original recording, Varese issued a CD in the late 90's, but that was incomplete and had a weird fadeout on the finale (Forever). They later expanded and corrected it for Herrmann at Fox set which sold out ridiculously fast. And considering this is one of those scores Varese has in perpetuity, we may be waiting a while before we get another one (and hopefully it won't sell out before I get wind of it like last year's reissue of Journey, but that one I at least have the TT Blu to keep me occupied).

With any luck, Varese will decide to reissue their superior complete master of The Ghost and Mrs. Muir in their Encore or 500 series, since their 500 Edition reissue of the Fox Box version of Journey to the Center of the Earth successfully sold out in record time.

That would be super duper...but I think I'd like it even better if Tadlow redid the whole score, not just an adumbrated version like the Bernstein (which is all I own).

Until then I'm trying to figure out my best bet as far as the complete, OS goes. There are at least a couple...I can't believe I thought the Bernstein was complete lol!

In the meantime, just bought the Intrada Ghost and the Darkness (skipped Under Fire for now, but that's in my future).

Oh, I also picked up McNeely's Citizen Kane...I have the Chandos and really like it (though Hangover Square I think comes across better on that recording imo). Still haven't checked out the Gephardt.

Hi Paul, great to hear from you! I've only been able to sample a bit of the McNeely (it's in the mail today). But I must say, it's going to be hard to beat the opera performance on the Chandos. I LOVE that woman's voice, and to me that cue is ample proof of Bernard's status as Great Composer.

REALLY looking forward to giving a more informed answer after mail today smile

This is a pretty stunning version of "Salammbo's Aria":

It may be my favorite -- but I'd have to compare all of the versions, including the two by Te Kanawa, before deciding for sure -- and I don't think I have all of the various versions in my collection in any event.

Hear hear! Bring it on. Still waiting for Ghost and Mrs Muir as heard on the Herrmann Fox Box that I missed. It can't be hard to sell 500 copies, better still make it at least a 1000!

The Ghost and Mrs Muir is my #1 request from Varese and I have their first release. I want the version with the correct fade out as well as the additional tracks and the remastering.

Whoa, hope to hear this comes out soon. In the meantime, about to pull the trigger on the original soundtrack.

Oh wait, I found the Varese:

Would this be my best bet for the complete original recording until the Varese rerelease? Any help would be hugely appreciated.

There's also this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008B0B1EK/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_7?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

The first one above appears to be the one I have. Varese' first release of the original tracks. Not familiar with the second one listed. The version that was part of the Herrmann box is the remastered, complete and corrected release. That's the one I hope that Varese releases separately. The first release is fine but knowing that there is a better one leaves me wanting...

Hmmm...I really do want a complete G&MM. Maybe I should just grab the first for now. And thanks Paul!
