Les Miserables -- One of my top Poledouris wants, in fact quite possibly my favorite Poledouris score! We all know how disappointing the original album on Mandalay/Hollywood Records was -- not the greatest sound quality, poor packaging (the track lengths were totally off), and the score lumped into four lengthy "suites" making it difficult to go to your favorite cue (even though I admit it's certainly not a problem to sit through the whole score!) This, perhaps his last true *masterpiece*, absolutely deserves a definitive presentation with more manageable tracks, remastered sound, great packaging and liner notes! Since the album is owned by Disney it is Intrada we must look to, as Doug recently confirmed they can do Hollywood Records stuff (specifically mentioning Goldsmith's Ghost and the Darkness).

This is especially a bummer for me, because I recently checked out the suites on youtube and really, really liked them.

It's interesting to me that this thread is nearly five years old and Intrada and/or Varese haven't released this obviously magnificent score. Curious about the movie.

Why would Varese release it? I don't think they've ever expanded a Hollywood Records album, and while they have (on fairly rare occasion) expanded albums by other labels besides themselves (i.e. a DE of Stargate) I don't think they have done it for a while, thankfully concentrating their expansion efforts on titles they control in perpetuity which no other label can do...and they already do that too infrequently for a lot of people's taste.

I wouldn't be surprised if it were on Intrada's list as they've expanded other Hollywood Records albums. But I know their Disney wish list is very long, and who knows where this would fall on their priorities?

I really like the film. Of course it's nowhere near the book and takes a lot of liberties with that source material, but it's such a long novel and I don't know of an adaptation that doesn't. This one is an excellent production with really good performances and an amazing score, which is more than enough for me to forgive it any other faults. I recommend you give it a watch -- the score is superb in context.

I really like what I've heard of the score, but I'm going to take you up on watching it on Amazon today.

I still think it's ridiculous this hasn't had a proper release.

The existing album is a reasonably-generous 49 minutes long (think of all the 29 minute albums Varese put out in the 90s!) and a great listen, actually. I can't think of any hugely important cue that was left off or anything. (It has been a while since I saw the film though.) It's just annoying to me that it's smushed into four long tracks as if it were a symphony, when it's really just a succession of cues like any other soundtrack album...it would have been nice if they were separated, but as I mentioned I love the whole score and would probably usually listen straight through anyway. But if I felt like including some highlights on a Poledouris compilation or something, they're more of a pain to extract than they should be.

Well, Filmtracks mentions a bootleg that IS ordered correctly and actually sounds better. However, not too big a fan of that kind of thing, personally.

And I agree, I heard a couple of the suites from the abovementioned album and it is a really, really good score imo. Deserving of MUCH better treatment. Not sure what the hold up is.

Probably just other scores being a higher priority. Intrada has often been doing just a single release every two weeks for a while now, with the occasional exception like their great end-of-2017 release of Damnation Alley with that mammoth 11 score Waxman set. I gather that they've been going slower than they used to (almost always a pair of releases every two weeks) because the projects themselves have been more complicated. So far this year they've given us significant expansions of two fan favorite scores that probably weren't simple projects (Kamen's Robin Hood and Silvestri's Roger Rabbit). As much as I'd love a new release of Les Miserables, I frankly wouldn't fault them if it's lower on their to do list.

I forgot about the existence of that other album of the score, though I'm sure I also learned about it from Filmtracks years ago. Just FYI, we're not allowed to discuss bootlegs here at this forum. Industry people frequent this board. Instead we occasionally skirt that by speaking about "footwarmers" or better yet, "unmentionables". smile

Good to know. I don't like unmentionables anyway...wait. that came out only part right.

I'm surprised Yavar has revived this yet, with the new Volume 3 from Dragon's Domain.

I was just getting to that. I removed Dolphin from my first post...I had somehow even omitted Tintorera. Remarkable that we're getting two *70s* scores of Basil's (composed on either side of Big Wednesday, though sadly not orchestral like it) on a 2-CD set for the price of one!

Here's the good news for anyone who missed it!

Wow. And little did I know Varese was already working on it! Behold -- 79 MINUTES:
https://www.varesesarabande.com/products/on-deadly-ground-the-deluxe-edition

Now that is an epic expansion considering the original album was only half an hour. It's almost like getting an entire new Poledouris score!

Also, BSX has recently announced Vol. 4 of their Poledouris Collection -- an unusual and fascinating release of his piano demos for The Blue Lagoon:

I believe that this video footage from Free Willy's recording sessions has been posted somewhere else in the message board :

Interestingly enough, what we can hear is a noticeably different version of "Friends Montage", here is the one featured in the album (and used in the movie, I think ?) :

Bonus track material for an expanded score album ? We can only hope ! :-)

A message to Ford:

Please, Could you tell us if in your collection dedicated to Basil Polédouris you are considering the possibility of including the famous "Honor and glory" take in a future album?

Thanks.

Bit of a bummer that we had no more new Poledouris in the four years that followed this post of mine, but at least Intrada has FINALLY broken our long Poledouris fast earlier this month with their spectacular and long-awaited complete release of Conan the Destroyer:
https://store.intrada.com/s.nl/it.A/id.12114/.f

(It's currently backordered from them until January, but it's a good sign for its popularity!)

I gotta admit, the orchestra sounds small but the performance is overall much better than I remembered!

I wonder what the future holds. Does Intrada have more Poledouris in the works? Are LLL or Quartet going to surprise us? Will Varese Sarabande expand one of their remaining unexpanded Poledouris albums, like For the Love of the Game or Hot Shots Part Deux? Will BSX/Dragon's Domain ever put out a Vol. 5? And most importantly of all, WILL ANYONE EVER OFFER A COMPLETE FREE WILLY 2, beyond the mere 10.5 minutes that have been commercially released of this great score so far?

Looking forward to receiving both Conan scores whenever they arrive!

Both Free Willy scores deserve proper Intrada / LLL treatment. Would buy in a heartbeat.

Now that the full unsold pilot "Pros & Cons" has popped up and I've heard the score, I'd like to recommend it gets released:

Quigley Down Under. I know there was an expansion on Prometheus in 2006 and while I don't know if it is complete, it has been 17 years and the secondary market on this one is nuts!

I'll always take more Poledouris.
