FAR HORIZONS/SECRET OF THE INCAS! Man, I know a long-time Chicago collector (now deceased), who would have given anything for SECRET OF THE INCAS.
I'll certainly buy one of these CDs. I enjoy both scores.
Bruce, you have a great knack for putting out things I never knew I wanted until I see that you've put them out. Then, it's like (smack in the head), "Wow, I could've had a V-8!... Of COURSE I want that!"
(*By the way, anyone under the age of 50, if you don't get the "V-8" reference, don't feel surprised or left out. Look it up on YouTube or something.)
And, for those who DO want the Yma Sumac songs from SECRET OF THE INCAS, they were not re-recorded for the film, they were grabbed directly from her Capitol LP (available on CD), "Voice of the Xtabay."

Exactly - they were not available to us and were added to the film's soundtrack as an afterthought. Mr. Buttolph uses one theme from the Yma album very judiciously in the main title - it's quite beautiful actually. Yma, Uma. Uma, Yma.

I have Yma's XTABAY Cd. After 2 or 3 listens, I was hooked. Really unique unusual vocalizations.

bruce, you mentioned that film nusic from warners is a tough nut to crack, but i know that other labels have released music from w.b., so is a case of warners only putting out a certain amount of film music from certain composers and leaving the rest in vaults? speaking of tough nuts to crack, it would be nice if you could mange to crack open the vaults from united artists and universal so we can hear so we can one day hear more beautiful film music. take care.
It is an ongoing battle, Warners, exacerbated because others have gotten in there. I will continue the good fight because the things I want to do are not the things that will ever get done otherwise.

You know very little Max Steiner has been done. We have the wonderful new recordings by John Morgan and Bill Stromberg. The recent (Disney) Those Calloways on Intrada. BYU was doing Steiner but has seemed to fade away. Out of 250 FSM CDs only one was Steiner and that was a reissue of the 3 LPs. Max is my favorite, hope some day you will be able to do a few. There must be a lot of Steiner at WB I would think.

The Republic library is now owned (controlled) by Viacom, of which Paramount Pictures is a part. Since Bruce seems to have a good rapport with Paramount staff and has licensed quite a number of scores from them, it would seem logical that he might try to access this little-touched Republic archive for some outstanding scores by Golden Age composers.
Bruce is, of course, a natural for this, since many of these scores would never be released in large numbers by other labels. His boutique Kritzerland label is ideal.
Among others, I'd love to hear a remastered and complete Steiner THE LAST COMMAND and COME NEXT SPRING, Victor Young scores including DARK COMMAND, BELLE LE GRAND, WILD BLUE YONDER, PERILOUS JOURNEY, SANDS OF IWO JIMA, FAIR WIND TO JAVA, JUBILEE TRAIL, TIMBERJACK, THE MAVERICK QUEEN, and JOHNNY GUITAR, and Nelson Riddle's FLAME OF THE ISLANDS and LISBON (....from which the 1950s hit, "Lisbon Antigua" derives.)
There are also little-known but interesting scores by Walter Scharf, Dale Butts, Nathan Scott, early Ernest Gold, George Antheil, Marlin Skiles and others, in the library.

It seems that anything from the Golden Age is better than what we're mostly subjected to now, which to me sounds more like aimless noise...

Hi Manderley, always enjoy reading your comments. I think we have the exact taste in film scores and films too.
I had forgotten about the Republic discs at BYU. Yes, sure would like to see new cds to The Last Command and Come Next Spring. I remember seeing both films when they first came out, always liked them. Wonderful Steiner scores in both. I saw Come Next Spring one Saturday afternoon at my local theatre with a bunch of other kids. At the end of the film we were fighting back the tears. I don't think the hyper active kids of today would enjoy or sit still for a film like this.
Would love to see all the Victor Young films you listed on cd. Max and my favorite and Victor is a close second.
Years back BYU was very active producing Steiner cds. Other than the fairly recent Since You Went Away things seem to have come to a halt with them. The cds BYU have done are outstanding, could not be any better.
Is BYU difficult to deal with? I seem to get that feeling.
Bruce, is it possible you can do something with the Republic discs of Max Steiner and Victor Young at BYU?

I got your reference, but I think the whole Yma Sumac/Amy Camus thing is just such a part of brain, that it didn't jump out at me in your post. For those who wonder what's going on, and for those who might not know about Yma Sumac, here it is in a nutshell:
Yma Sumac was a Peruvian singer with a five-octave range, and supposedly was a descendant of an Incan emperor. She made a big splash in the U.S. record market, starting around 1950 or so, with her vocal exotica albums. There really wasn't really anything else like her out there at the time, or probably since then.
Anyway, after all the ballyhoo about her Incan heritage, etc., somebody started the rumor that it was all a publicity stunt, and that she was really Amy Camus (Yma Sumac spelled backwards) from New Jersey or somewhere.
In conclusion, buy Bruce's CD for the score AND the Yma Sumac "Voice of the Xtabay" CD to complete the experience.
