Matinee isn't on my list... BUT if Varese one day revisits this and Looney Tunes, then I believe that will close the book on the Dante/Goldsmith collaboration as far as definitive soundtrack albums go. An amazing feat I must say!

You're forgetting one really good one: Small Soldiers!

D'oh! You're right. I guess when I wrote that post, I had it in my mind that it was definitely coming or something. smile

Even if among the many Goldsmith titles listed there isn't a single one you want, why bother saying "enough Jerry already"?

Yavar

Because it's become like a religion on here. And if people from Varese really do frequent these boards I want them and other record companies to know that they'd have more sales from me if they stopped mining mediocre back-catalog Goldsmith scores and did some out of print Elfman or Goldenthal. That's all. Not trying to be inflammatory.

Fair enough. The thing about Goldsmith is he was so prolific over a long career, so there are a lot more Goldsmith scores for us members of his religion to need. smile But Varese does hold a handful of good Elfman and Goldenthal scores in perpetuity as well, so let me join you in pining after Elfman's Dolores Claiborne and Hellboy II, and Goldenthal's Demolition Man and Sphere in particular!

Well the votes are in and I've done a tally!

Our Man Flint (1966) 5
In Like Flint (1967) 5
Planet of the Apes (1968) 7
The Mephisto Waltz (1971) 8
The Other (1972) 14
The Omen (1976) 7
The Final Conflict (1981) 6
Raggedy Man (1981) 4
Lionheart (1987) 4
Leviathan (1989) 15
Love Field (1991)
Mom and Dad Save the World (1991) 6
Medicine Man (1992) 6
Mr. Baseball (1992)
Malice (1993) 1
Matinee (1993) 7
Rudy (1993) 5
Angie (1994) 1
City Hall (1996)
Air Force One (1997) 23
L.A. Confidential (1997) 7
U.S. Marshals (1997) 19
Small Soldiers (1998) 29
The Haunting (1999) 7
The 13th Warrior (1999) 15
Hollow Man (2000) 8
Along Came a Spider (2001) 5
Timeline (2003) 7
Looney Tunes: Back in Action (2003) 4

In addition to these titles Varese controls in perpetuity, other titles people included were: Thriller, Freud, Chinatown, MacArthur, Shamus, The Man, The Reincarnation of Peter Proud, Damnation Alley, The Don Is Dead, Supergirl, Mulan, The Mummy, Lonely Guy, the Barnaby Jones pilot score, and one person joked Crystal Heart (by Joel Goldsmith, not Jerry). Plus, a lot of people answered that they wanted "all of them," some of whom included specific picks in addition and some who did not. I think it is telling how much people want Starship Troopers because several people mentioned it even though it's by Poledouris and not Goldsmith. smile

RANKED:

The clear #1 winner: SMALL SOLDIERS, with 29 votes! I think Varese has gotten a loud and clear message about what score people want next.

In solid 2nd place, AIR FORCE ONE with 23 votes. (Some people wanted Randy Newman's rejected score to be included and some people didn't care.)

3rd place surprised me as I find it a fairly generic action effort and I had no idea it was so beloved, but I'm guessing the brevity of the original album is playing a major role in people wanting more: U.S. MARSHALS with 19 votes.

We then have a TIE at 4th place with LEVIATHAN and THE 13TH WARRIOR at 15 votes. (If the latter is released multiple people have expressed interest in Graeme Revell's rejected score being included.)

Right behind them at 5th place we have the first "Classic Jerry" score on the rankings: THE OTHER (14 votes).

The rest of the titles received under 10 votes each, ranked as follows:

8 votes each: THE MEPHISTO WALTZ and HOLLOW MAN
7 votes each: PLANET OF THE APES, THE OMEN, MATINEE, L.A. CONFIDENTIAL, THE HAUNTING, and TIMELINE
6 votes each: THE FINAL CONFLICT, MOM AND DAD SAVE THE WORLD, and MEDICINE MAN
5 votes each: OUR MAN FLINT, IN LIKE FLINT, RUDY, and ALONG CAME A SPIDER
4 votes each: RAGGEDY MAN, LIONHEART, and LOONEY TUNES: BACK IN ACTION
1 vote each: MALICE and ANGIE

The only Varese-controlled titles which no one voted for were LOVE FIELD, CITY HALL, and MR. BASEBALL...though I would point out that in this thread and others, people have recently asked for expanded editions of all three of these even though they aren't as high of a priority as other titles.

City Hall Complete Score Breakdown (about 12 minutes of missing music estimated): http://filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?threadID=110759&forumID=1&archive=0

Love Field (not a breakdown but discussion of a key highlight cue which is missing on CD): http://filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?threadID=114459&forumID=1&archive=0

Well, this was a fun exercise with some surprises. Thanks to everyone who participated!

LIONHEART, without any hesitation !

What a masterpiece.
The 2 CDs are old now, and some music is certainly missing.
Very impressive score, very elegant, touching.

Well, although I don't think Varese is going to do anything but what they think they can make a profit on, I'll put in my vote for PLANET OF THE APES if only to get it to an 8.

December 20, 2017 will be the 50th anniversary of the first day recording session for APES. Given the landmark nature of the score, a remastered/restored CD from Varese would be nice, but I won't be holding my breath.

I'm quite alright with that top three. It would be great to have all of the Goldsmith action scores finally complete. Throw em in a playlist, hit shuffle, sit back and enjoy.

Just watch, Malice or Criminal Law will be the next Deluxe Edition, and it'll be sold out in hours. wink

Malice!!!! That was one of the bottlecaps I collected back in the '90s I got rid of long ago. Haven't missed it. Not meant as a knock against the score or Goldsmith, of course, it just does nothing for me. I like '60s and '70s Goldsmith best.

Okay, for all its worth, here is my wish list...THE FINAL CONLICT-- basically for the improved sound a new expanded pressing would achieve. RAGGEDY MAN-- because I am missing it in my collection. THE HAUNTING-- would be nice to hear the complete score. TIMELINE-- again for the improved sound. MEDICINE MAN-- personal fav and would like to hear a more complete score with better sonics. there you go!!

Well, I went ahead and honored the few votes that came in after I did my first tally. The top five didn't change at all, so for those who are curious, here is the current (updated) standing of all the scores which received fewer than 10 votes each...

8 votes each: PLANET OF THE APES, THE MEPHISTO WALTZ, THE HAUNTING, TIMELINE, and HOLLOW MAN
7 votes each: THE OMEN, THE FINAL CONFLICT, MEDICINE MAN, MATINEE, and L.A. CONFIDENTIAL
6 votes: MOM AND DAD SAVE THE WORLD
5 votes each: OUR MAN FLINT, IN LIKE FLINT, RAGGEDY MAN, RUDY, LIONHEART, and ALONG CAME A SPIDER
4 votes: LOONEY TUNES: BACK IN ACTION
1 vote each: MALICE and ANGIE

i've been all about small soldiers for this and I still am, but how about fierce creatures. that's a pretty amazing album that slipped my mind for a while. is there more to be added to it. a sound overhaul? it's one of jerry's best and a little hard to categorize for him.

Varese does presumably own the rights for any potential reissue, but from everything I've heard, the complete score and then some is on the existing album. Supposedly Jerry recorded some additional cues specifically for padding out the album since the complete score was so short. Does someone know of any cues in the film but not on the album?

By the time I wrote my response, Yavar had already written his. I've deleted mine in the interest of being slightly less tedious than I usually am.

Hey, I didn't find it tedious. Great minds think alike and all... smile

Not sure if any more usable slices of music exists, but I vote for:

Fate is the Hunter

Love the solitary trumpet with the background voices.

Varese doesn't control Fate Is the Hunter; years after they released just a few minutes in their box set, Intrada put out a pairing of it with Shock Treatment, both significantly expanded (if perhaps not quite complete; I'm unsure). Still available from their Amazon storefront, though no longer on their website for sale: http://www.amazon.com/Shock-Treatment-Hunter-Jerry-Goldsmith/dp/B00CBJSLY0
