Couldn't just 100 be pressed? I've seen in these reports from Lukas how they will press odd numbers of like 2300 of a 3000 title so just because they could do 500 more, couldn't they decide to do just a part of that, a little at a time in relation to demand?

I ordered this on day one, so it doesn't matter to me, but I think some clarification on this would be helpful.

If FSM prints the last 500 copies, there's no hurry anymore. The people that have waited 2-3 years to buy this, suddenly upset that they missed out, would STILL wait.

They may, or they may have been prompted by this to take the plunge. But either way, a lot of the people who've posted here about missing out WILL get it eventually.

Funny. I had this in my proverbial shopping cart and was ready to check out only a couple of weeks back. I don't recall if I decided to wait or just got distracted. Now the ship has sailed. Rózsa is one of the guys I am growing to really admire, rather than one in my short list of true heroes like Jerry and Johnny, so this isn't the end of the world. But I do hope I run across this one day down the road, for less than an arm and a leg.

You know whose fault it was that I missed out on this? Mine. So I won't ask FSM to do anything differently. If I find a copy for a more affordable price, great: if I don't, well, I'll live.

If FSM where to press just 100 more, who would be first in line? The speculators! And then we will have pleas to press 100 more! What will happen is, in 5-6 months Kritzerland will start re-issuing these individually, you know it is going to happen, since so many people are saying they missed out on it.

I did not buy this when it first came out, but I did get at the end of last year and I still have not opened it. Too many other titles jumped in front of this. I will get to it some day.

Right now there are many on this Forum who underestimate FSM's latest project, but once some people have received their copies and reported their views on the new 5CD BEN-HUR, sales for the set may accelerate in a way similar to the recent Treasury sales.

I missed out. I don't blame myself. I blame Lukas. There should be 500 or more copies left. FSM is totally awesome in almost every respect, but you simply can't trust them when it comes to how many copies they say they're going to manufacture for many of their titles. Earlier we found out they overpressed... After that revelation I thought they couldn't be trusted to not print more... but now they're manufacturing LESS then the promised number. It's extremely frustrating.

I was planning to buy one but the price always caused me to put it off.
Additionally I felt that the set was bloated. It contained too much.
The only piece that I really wanted was The Power and having to spend that much for one score made me procrastinate.
I hope that another label will release that one score on it's own.
Actually Lucas should release it since he already sold us the crumby album version already.

Duplicate post.

It wasn't worth reading once, never mind twice.

I don't know why you blame Lukas - other than publicly stating he was going to press more and than suddenly publicly stating that they are not. That doesn't seem like the best PR, but you read this article with the juicy details on how the Raksin was funded - It doesn't take a genius to see what is probably going on here.

It's unfortunate because this is a very stellar set, but I I see no reason to vilify Lukas.

I would absolutely wager that LK's hands got tied on this one. There's simply no logical reason for LK to say mere weeks ago:

we have parts to make another 500 and will do so when needed.

....and if there is, we'll never know, so that's my interpretation and I'm sticking to it.

You can vilify LK all you want, but all I have to do is look at my Rozsa shelf and over half must have FSM spines - and Ben Hur isn't even here yet.

How long has the Rozsa Treasury set been available? Months? Years? Lukas has/had a business to run and must avoid excessive inventories. How long would it 'take' to sell off another 500 copies?Years? How much would it cost him to produce the 500 copies? When would he have to pay for these costs? It makes no sense to continue to front costs if one is not sure they will ever be able to recoup their costs.

Lesson learned...buy what you want as fast as you can...

Didn't get this but can't complain, I had plenty of opportunity.
I really only wanted 5 of the CDs and I could not justify to myself paying $180 + shipping for 5 CDs.

I wouldn't say Lukas should be villified but I think in fairness, you can make a case that these actions are not 100% blameless. The low quantities reports have been designed to give us suggestions on what will not be pressed any further and let us make better informed judgments on what to get sooner than later, and with all due respect, that wasn't done with the Treasury. In contrast to other titles, the implication was more that the remaining 500 would be pressed which was how I read it, and while I'm among those who wanted to get it right away and did, I can understand why some people are a little annoyed at this point.

You missed my point - I definitely think an entity is responsible for making a financial decision that forced FSM to scrap parts instead of utilize them, my opinion is that people are misdirecting their "blame".

Oh well.

Poor Lukas. He doesn't deserve any of this criticism.

Of all the entrepreneurs in the soundtrack business I think he was the most patient and took the most risks since his first FSM album in 1998, putting out a reasonable 3000 copies per release, with often 20 releases a year, more often than not with little prospect of a quick return. Most of these releases sat there, month after month, year after year, but being a soundtrack lover himself, Lukas did this primarily for soundtrack lovers like you and me. He set the benchmark for great production values and well-researched and informative booklets with complete track-by-track liner notes.

When other soundtrack retailers started to cut their runs to 2000 copies or 1000 copies in order to make a faster return, Lukas struggled to maintain his 3000 run for the longest time, but even he was finally forced to cut his losses and reduce quantities. Yes, if a certain release was doing well, he pressed more than he had originally agreed to, but that revenue went to subsidize other new releases that he knew some collectors still sought as well as to compensate for other releases that were underselling.

Inevitably some collectors have turned on him and blamed him for their own poorly thought-out purchasing habits... and yes, for their acquired sense of entitlement.

A few more runs around the spina and the chariot race is over for Lukas at FSM. He will have completed the race, perhaps somewhat bruised, but with his wits and integrity intact. He has fought the good fight at the service of all those who appreciate his efforts and consider his achievements a victory.

Absolutely Mr Komar

Poor Lukas indeed... all he's done is gone and produced hundreds of best quality and/or definitive editions of great soundtracks to film music fans that the big-suits in the big studios wouldn't have. I can't imagine how he must feel. I mean, how DARE he? If only there was an Oscar for this...

This set clearly had a lot of time and effort (and money) thrown at it by several individuals and the result was a set retailed at a not unreasonable price (given the number of discs). Perhaps it might have been split but then maybe some of the individual CDs might not have sold so well... or may not even have been pressed at all. I know times are tough and some genuine fans are resentful of the so-called "speculators" with eBay accounts, but the set has been available for a period measured in years.

Mine is on it's way (to the UK) and I got it by sheer chance and fortunate timing on Feb 22. How? Well, "Land of the Pharaohs" was recently on TV here and I watched it, recalling that some preferred Tiomkin's score of that film to the Hermann/Newman masterpiece (which makes the otherwise bland "The Egyptian" such essential viewing). Well that being the first FSM title I bought (elsewhere), I Googled for LotP and was directed here... Well of course I couldn't help but notice the then yet-to-be-released "Ben-Hur" set. Therein was a link to this Treasury set and I had to have a look, and then went over to the SAE site.

I kept thinking of reasons not to buy given the price, but continued to look around the FSM site. Now I'm probably going to annoy someone by admitting that in my panic AFTER I'd seen the blog where it was officially stated that stock was down to the low 50s, I misread and misunderstood the notes on "King of Kings" (one of my favourites since I was a kid). For some reason I thought that it was saying the box ALSO contained the "Rhino" OST version which I don't have, and this was the final reason to order, less than a day since I knew of the box's existence, and I'd never even heard of "The Power"! Then after my order confirmation I looked again the following day (I had saved the page link) and it was GONE... and I panicked again, until I received my shipping confirmation!

Well I may be naive, but now I had to find a copy of that Rhino set online, and I have, and was compelled to order that too, and now some things I was intending to buy (inc. non essential food and of course alcohol) will not be. Let me make amends to the envious to say that if you can't find something, ask Google [other search engines are available], and JUST KEEP LOOKING. I've just Googled for the Treasury set today, Saturday 25 Feb, and, em, found it NEW IN STOCK on an independent British record retailer's site, at normal price. It's sold out at source yes, but some third party non-speculative non pound/dollar-signs-in-their-eyes retailers may have it still. If you want it and are fortunate to be able to buy, search NOW. Stop reading this. NOW.

So for FSM [Lukas?] still reading: I'm sorry you're intending to close down production soon. Who's going to press "Witchfinder General" UK OST now??? Sorry this is so long. [Edit: Speling Misteak correction in my very first post... now that's what grinds MY teeth]
