I just remember the Laurie Johnson re-recording as being painfully slow.

Since the Intrada has about six more minutes of music on it than the Rhino, but there's no alignment between track times and titles between the two, can anyone more knowledgeable than me pinpoint where the new music is to be found on the Intrada?

Just got this yesterday, and it sounds really good. I think my favorite track so far is "The Balcony/The Match Box".

Intrada has an extra track:
28. The Crash 1:53

The running times of some Intrada tracks are longer than the Rhino:
01. Overture/Main Title 2:19 (Intrada), 2:14 (Rhino)
02. The Streets 1:07 (Intrada), 1:03 (Rhino)
.
.
.

What does that mean?

Is that what it's called?

It's not a "Match Box" in the movie, of course, it's a "match book."
(There WAS a difference once-upon-a-time! smile )

A "match box" containing wooden matches, like Diamond-brand matches today, would have crashed to the floor so loudly everyone in the room would have heard it.

I wonder if Herrmann was the one who mis-titled it "match box"......

A few months ago I saw the hygienist's cut of the movie in which Cary Grant throws a Nicorette gum box that indeed crashes loudly to the floor. So, unfortunately Cary Grant is shot to death and there's no Mount Rushmore sequence. frown

Okay, there's two minutes' worth. Another four minutes of new music still unaccounted for...

*whistles*

Not a bad soundtrack, but since I've never owned a previous release, the hissing noise heard throughout does kind of get to me. I guess it's the best it can get without sacrificing quality.

Just received this. Congratulations to all involved for a splendidly presented CD (really nice booklet). I never had any problem with the sound quality of the Rhino but even my tin ears can detect a worthwhile improvement in the sound quality. Still, I'll hang onto the Rhino which provides a handy aide-memoire for where the tracks fit vis a vis the film.

If I'm not mistaken this is the first of the classic M-G-M soundtracks to be released by Intrada (i.e. pre-1986 M-G-M films owned by Warner Bros). Hopefully, the first of many.

I think you're on the money with the 1st release. The other special Rhino for me is the Raksin, can't imagine that one being bettered much.

Has anyone else ever thought that the main theme from the original 1980s V mini-series was awfully reminiscent of North by Northwest's main theme?

Yes. Very close. Love the score to V. smile

It was the second thing I thought. First thing being that the "V the final battle" opening theme is infinitely better.

It was the second thing I thought. First thing being that the "V the final battle" opening theme by Barry De Vorzon is infinitely better.

The Rhino release had severe sound problems! Very noticeable. But it was the best they could do at the time. The Intrada release is good. Not quite the slam dunk I was hoping for but considering the damage represented in the Rhino release...a vast improvement.

Apparently matchbooks were sometimes called "match box" at the time. I just saw a film from early 1950s where a small folded paperboard containing matches was referred to as a "matchbox". It was placed on an aircraft propeller blade to demonstrate how well balanced the propeller was.

7:22-7:37 "The balance of these blades is so perfect that, believe it or not, the weight of a paper matchbox will make them revolve."

Again, why do people need to chime in and tell us why they're not ordering this or that title? No one really cares...at least I don't. If a score is released and I have no interest, I don't comment. There are others who will love that particular release.

Okay, I was all ready to rant. I had just a/b'd the Intrada with the Rhino WITHOUT reading the fine print. It was driving me crazy that the action cues sounded so much better on the Intrada while the quieter cues were all either the same as the Rhino or lacking some punch in the Intrada!?! Then I read the fine print - the action cues had suffered deterioration and had been improved since the Rhino. So, I'm fine with this release. It's a worthwhile improvement especially for the action cues and for those who don't have any version of this score well worth picking up.

It's called "discussion," and absent a violation of the stated rules of the board, that kind of comment is perfectly acceptable and does not require your approval. By the same token, you're allowed to say you don't approve, under the same parameters. So, moving right along...
