Wow... nearly $300 for a set of music that only contains 25% previously unreleased material?!! In what universe does this make sense? A disappointed "pass" from this fan. frown

The cost for the set is around $225. This is a lot of money. What really kills this is the $125 they want to charge for shipping and handling. So the cost is closer to $350. I just can't wrap my brain around $125 shipping cost.

The Star Trek set was $225 and was 15-CDs with really nice booklets but more mundane packaging. This set has extravagant packaging but is only 11-CDs with only 30% of it new content at best. So the Star Trek set was superior in new music content and the same price. Shipping for it was also much more reasonable. Shipping from US to Europe was $29 for the Star Trek set but here this set costs almost $100 more to ship from Europe to the US.

This $125 shipping simply boggles my mind. Silva needs a domestic partner in the US to handle freight on this thing.

Where can we read that they are charging $125.00 for the shipping? We have been putting money aside for this set, but if that is what they are charging, we will have to pass on this set, too.

Okay, I found it on their site. Well, guess we can stop saving now. I do not believe in paying postage that is half the price of the set. The 4 CD set will have to do. Very disappointed. My father passed on the Elfman set and we were glad he did after everyone's started falling apart. I hope that those of you who can afford this one, that it is better constructed.

Right on their website:
https://cart.tmstor.es/product.php?id=17797

76 British Pound (GBP) converts to 125.30 United States Dollar (USD).

Also remember you will pay an extra international transaction fee on your credit card. This varies by bank and credit card agreements. This is a $350 set.

So is anybody here ordering this? I am going to bite the bullet because despite the insane shipping cost, the set looks like a beautiful collector's item. (The light on top comes on when you open the Tardis...how cool is that?). I know of at least two friends who are Doctor Who fans and soundtrack collectors but don't post here that are buying. Who else is splurging?

I was going to buy it when it was originally announced. I still would like to have it but I am going to pass on it. I did order the UK edition of the anniversary soundtrack with the four CDs from Screen Archives. It will have to be good enough. They should arrange a domestic shipping partner and get the shipping fees under control then perhaps I would change my mind again.

Yeah.. I think I will. It is a bit steep and I debated it a lot but I'm an old school Dr Who fan and i know I'll kick myself if I don't. I've been listening to some of the stuff on the smaller set and it's given me a new appreciation of music that I had previously written off as 'pretty awful'!

The postage came down from $125.00 to $91.00 and it is a sizable jump, but still out of reach for my Father and me.

Based on the conversion rate one can argue for paypalcharge now or credit card pay later.

Why do I get feeling orders will be lackluster and they'll knock down price further penalizing those who order early,

I think you missed the part where they said that the set will only be on sale for seven days.

I had e-mailed Silva after they announced the postage rates saying that I had planned on purchasing the set but just could not justify $125.00 for shipping. They sent me a very nice response basically saying they really tried to find the lowest rates possible and that was the best they could do. Then I received another e-mail from them saying that they were still working on trying to get a better rate so apparently the 55.00 GBP is it. I honestly believe that this is likely the cheapest they can get it at this point. I am sure they realize they are going to lose some sales even at that rate but they aren't willing to lose money on shipping.

As for myself I am considering having it shipped to a friend who lives part time in the U.K. and then asking them to bring it back with them to the States. The difference in U.K. and U.S. shipping works out to around $75.00 so don't know if that is worth it to inconvenience them. I am going to e-mail Silva to see if they can tell me what the dimesions and weight of the package will be.

I passed on the Elfman/Burton mostrosity a few years ago and did not regert it. I think it's great that they can make these fantastic packages but just unfortunate they cannot also release the same set in a plain slipcase that is a little more affordable to those that just want the music.

Having said that I think Silva seems like a good company that are trying to do their best with this set. Not sure they realized what it would cost them to ship this set overseas when they decided to create it.

Exactly. I think any hoping to get it later at a reduced price will be sorely disappointed. Silva is only manufacturing the number of actual sales they make in that 7 day window. There will be no remaindered sales. There are enough die-hard Doctor Who fans (possibly in the UK alone) to make this work for them. I'm comfortable that they are trying their best to get the shipping costs down. I do some international shipping myself and the costs skyrocketed within just the last few months. Since they are also dealing with what will be a fairly heavy item that also must be well-protected to prevent damage...this cost seems in line. At least it's now below $100 US.

Why do I get feeling orders will be lackluster and they'll knock down price further penalizing those who order early,

From the official Newsletter [13.12.2013]:

...
When the pre-order closes you will no longer be able to purchase the Tardis Box Set and it will not be available in any other on-line retailers or shops. The current price is £135 plus postage and packing and we will deliver to anywhere in the world. There is a possibility that the price will be less than this, in which case you will be charged the lowest price when your order is completed.
...

My personal interpretation:
The more people ordering the Box, the cheaper it might potentially get for all buyers.
Unfortunately given the rather high starting price, chances are that not enough people are ordering it to warrant a significant price reduction.

In any case I'll be ordering it - I've long been considering buying a comprehensive Dr. Who CD-collection and this seems like the perfect chance to do so - even though the price is a little(?) bit steep.
(Luckily I'm currently living in Europe wink)

Potential customers might find the following information, posted by Paul Smith on my website's message board, useful...

http://www.zetaminor.com/roobarb/showthread.php?42266-Silva-Screen-DW-Soundtracks/page24

Here's a breakdown of which tracks haven't been released before. (That is, not previously released on a Who CD, and obviously not everyone will have every CD previously released.)

Of the total 389 tracks, 106 (27.2) haven't been released before these two sets, 91 of which (23.4%) are exclusive to the 11-disc set.

By disc:

1 -- 58 tracks, 6 new (10.3%), 5 exclusive (8.6%)
2 -- 71 tracks, 19 new (26.8%), 14 excl (19.7%)
3 -- 36 tracks, 19 new (52.8%), 16 excl (44.4%)
4 -- 37 tracks, 10 new (27%), 8 excl (21.6%)
5 -- 22 tracks, 6 new (27.3%), 4 excl (18.2%)
6 -- 14 tracks, 13 new and exclusive (92.9%)
7 -- 22 tracks, 19 new (86.4%), 17 excl (77.3%)
8 -- 34 tracks, 10 new and exclusive (29.4%)
9 -- 36 tracks, 4 new and exclusive (11.1%)
10 & 11 have no new tracks, 8 on the 4-disc set are not on the 11-discer and several are shorter than their original Series CD releases

Cheers Julian K for posting Paul Smiths breakdown here that is incredibly useful. It will help me decide if I want to get this or not. 27% of new music isn't bad, but I was hoping it would be a higher figure to go with the price. Its disappointing give how much unreleased music from docs 9, 10 & 11 there is that more wasn't included.
