Coincidentally, but somewhat irrelevantly, I had a dream about Tom Baker this morning. I was his VIP guest of honour. He could climb specially-made carpet-like walls with his fingers and scoot across the ceiling. And he threw a bucket of water over Rolf Harris, who cried.

Tom Baker would no doubt laugh uproariously at this.

When asked during the recent Doctor Who Celebration what he remembered about meeting Jon Pertwee for his regeneration scene, Fourth (and arguably most popular) Doctor Tom Baker said that he remembered nothing!

“Absolutely nothing at all. He didn’t speak to me. Maybe he was grieving. I don’t remember anything about him at all.”
Baker then had a little bit of fun at the late Pertwee’s expense:

“I do remember he never bought me a drink. He had – we call it on Gallifrey – Alien Hand Syndrome. His hand wouldn’t go where the money was…I remember nothing except anticipating future glory.”
All joking aside, grief may very well have played into how Pertwee interacted with Baker. We know from previous documentary interviews that Pertwee’s decision to leave the role was largely due to the leaving of Barry Letts and the death of actor Roger Delgado (the Master), who had been a close friend. And perhaps deep down, like the Tenth Doctor’s last words, he truly didn’t want to go.

Baker, as we all know, certainly did go on to achieve “future glory,” and Pertwee did reprise his role in the 20th Anniversary special, The Five Doctors, as well as a few audio adventures in the ’80s. However, it is surprising to learn that they had no interaction at all during the filming of Pertwee’s last and Baker’s first scene.

Tom Baker has expressed his heartfelt thanks to fans around the world for their support, saying he felt 'swamped in love' following his appearance in the 50th Anniversary episode of Doctor Who.

The veteran actor, who turns 80 later this month, posted a New Year’s message on his website, reflecting on the past year and his plans for the future. He said wonderful messages came in from around the world following his cameo in the The Day of the Doctor, which he revealed was filmed in Cardiff last spring. Through the wintry darkness of April, I travelled to Cardiff where my scene was to be shot. Matt and I did not discuss the scene or talk about what it might mean; God forbid! No, we started just after eight o' clock and about four hours later I was released.

Baker also spoke of his experience at the Excel Centre in London, where he attended the 50th Anniversary Celebration along with thousands of fans."It was tumult: the fans cheered as if I had come back from the dead and the cheering did the trick... I travelled back in time: it was wonderful. I enjoyed it all."

In the message Tom Baker tells how he spent Christmas without power, following storms which hit the South East of England just before the holiday, Sue & I had to manage the best we could in the darkness, trying to be cheerful and entertaining ourselves. He looks forward to completing more recordings for Big Finish Productions in the New Year. I have never been happier at work than I am with my colleagues at Big Finish. The actors are well cast and are wonderful company.

Tom Baker thanked fans for their emails and messages on his facebook page. I am constantly touched and amazed by the personal stories people have told in my guestbook about how watching Doctor Who helped them through difficult times and inspired them to make something of their lives. Thank you for sharing these wonderful stories with me and other fans. I certainly find it very interesting.

Tom Baker was born 20th January 1934 and today celebrates his 80th birthday!

Of course, we all know Tom best for his portrayal as the legendary fourth Doctor. A role he remained in for seven years between 1974–1981, making him the longest serving incarnation to date and the one most fondly remembered of the classic era.

Fortunately Tom was able to make a brief but unforgettable appearance for Doctor Who’s 50th anniversary last year as the mysterious Curator. Will we ever see him again? Who knows…

I really liked Donna but quite shocked she's number two. Good for her. Can't stand Rose, but loved Amy. (My fav) I guess they canceled each other out!

Tom Baker celebrates his 80th birthday today and the BBC has simultaneously released a short video in which the actor discusses playing the Doctor and his return last year to the programme.

In it, he says:
It's 30-odd years since I finished with it but I still get recognised. Everybody in the village calls me "Doctor" and people on building sites still shout "'Ello Doctor!" which amuses me no end!

In addition, a slightly longer audio-only interview has been made available via BBC Worldwide's Doctor Who site in which Baker says he stayed for so long in the show because it made him so happy:
I've been gone and I keep telling people I wrote an autobiography and said how happy I was doing Doctor Who and here I am now about to have my 80th birthday event and I'm Doctor Who again, you know, so my happiness is restored.
Asked to sum up in one line his Doctor for someone who had never seen him, Baker responds: "One word, I think: Adorable!" and laughs. The interview can be listened to below:

From the sidebar of ABOUT TIME co-author Lawrence Miles' blog:

"But I will mention that in 1977, the same year Mary Whitehouse's assault on Doctor Who reached its most vitriolic point, she presented Jimmy Savile with a special award for his "wholesome family entertainment". Then, as now, morality campaigners were very bad at spotting actual immorality. Even when it was standing right next to them in a DayGlo vest."

Big Finish have announced a new set of adventures featuring Tom Baker as the fourth Doctor with Louise Jameson as Leela, written by the pair's original producer Philip Hinchcliffe alongside Ghost Light writer Marc Platt.

Philip Hinchcliffe Presents (Credit: Big Finish)Philip Hinchcliffe Presents
Starring Tom Baker and Louise Jameson
Written by Philip Hinchcliffe and Marc Platt
Released September 2014

Former Doctor Who producer Philip Hinchcliffe has been reunited with his stars, Tom Baker and Louise Jameson, for ten brand new episodes of Doctor Who made for audio at Big Finish.

Doctor Who: Philip Hinchcliffe Presents will consist of two epic full-cast stories, filled with all the drama and chills that marked Hinchcliffe’s era of the TV show.

The Ghosts of Gralstead is a six-part adventure, and it finds the Doctor and Leela returning to Victorian London, in the year 1860:
At St Clarence’s Hospital, respected surgeon Sir Edward Scrivener requires the bodies of the dead… At Doctor McDivett’s Exhibition of Living Wonders and Curiosities, miracles are afoot… And in Gralstead House, the ghost will walk again. Mordrega has come to Earth...
Carolyn Seymour – who is known for Quantum Leap, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Voyager and, notably, for playing Abby Grant in the original Survivors – plays Mordrega. Sir Edward is played by Gethin Anthony (Game of Thrones).

The second, four-part adventure is called The Devil’s Armada:
The TARDIS materialise in Sissenden Village in the sixteenth century. Catholic priests are hunted, so-called witches are drowned in the ducking stool, and in the shadows the Vituperon are watching… and waiting...

Doctor Who: Philip Hinchcliffe Presents also includes a special hour-long documentary featuring interviews with Tom, Louise, Philip and the cast, and is released in September.

The CD boxed set will be launched at Big Finish Day 5 in Slough on Saturday 13th September, which Tom, Philip and Carolyn are attending.

Tom Baker seems to be enjoying his stint revisiting his greatest role with audio producers Big Finish. It may have taken some doing to persuade him to appear as the Fourth Doctor again but now there’s no stopping him, and currently we’re into his third series of adventures with another batch promised next year and more treats to come before then.

Latest snaps from Big Finish show Tom (he likes his braces doesn’t he?) with co-star Farscape’s Virginia Hey in latest release White Ghosts, the second release of the current run. Next month we can look forward to The Crooked Man with co-stars including Neil Stuke, Sarah Smart and Lizzie Roper. Series three sees Tom paired up once again with Louise Jameson as Leela, warrior of the Sevateem.

As if that wasn’t enough to be going on with, September will see the release of the eagerly awaited Phillip Hinchcliffe Presents box set with the classic era producer dreaming up some hopefully truly terrifying scenarios for the Doctor to tackle. Tickets are also on sale now for Big Finish Day 5, with Baker and Hinchcliffe set to appear in Slough on 3rd September.

Tom Baker says he’s thrilled that the classic Doctor Who series is to be screened on the Horror Channel.

Speaking today, the Great Man of Doctor Who said

Horror is my very favourite genre so I am thrilled the classic Doctor Who series have been picked up by the Horror Channel.

There was clearly a darker edge to my storylines, which I think brought a new dimension to the series. I remember hearing of the series scaring children – I wonder how the audience will react to the series today, all grown up.

Horror Channel has completed a deal with BBC Worldwide to broadcast 30 stories from the Classic series which ran 1963 to 1989 featuring the first seven Doctors, starting with William Hartnell and concluding with Sylvester McCoy.

Launching on Fri 18 April (Good Friday) the season begins with the very first story An Unearthly Child, and then leads into a special WHO ON HORROR weekend – a classic marathon featuring one story from each of the Doctors across the Easter weekend. There will then be weekday double-bills in daytime and evening slots with stories shown in chronological order starting on Easter Mon 21 April.

Says Tom:

The Horror of Fang Rock’ is one of my favourite stories so I’m looking forward to that one!

It can be said, without debate, that Tom Baker’s turn as the Fourth Doctor is one of science fiction’s most iconic performances. The booming voice, the alien-like persona, the cocksure attitude; every bit the “genuine article.” However, if all you know of Baker is his time in the TARDIS, then you are certainly missing out. As incredible a performer Tom Baker is, he is equally an immensely interesting person. And now is the best time to get to know him!

Originally released in 1997, Who On Earth is Tom Baker?: An Autobiography gave an incredible insight into the life of the most popular actor to portray our beloved Time Lord. Of course, now it’s 2014 and books tend to disappear and go out of print over time; what’s a curious modern Whovian to do? Fear not, dear reader! The autobiography is now available in Kindle format from Amazon!
