Since you seem to like In the Garden of Beasts which I also found really interesting, you should try another Erik Larsen book called The Devil In The White City, which was written a few years ago. It reads like a novel but is totally based upon historical facts. Really good.

A few years ago I posted about reading the first volume of this series. It seems fitting to post that I am now reading the final book in this series. Although it is a terrible shame we lost Robert Jordan before he could finish his story, Brandon Sanderson has done a great job working with the notes and materials Jordan left behind to complete the series.

Recently finished Me and Earl and The Dying Girl by Jesse Andrews. Although it was marketed as a young adult novel, it's just a highly enjoyable book telling a hilariously funny and sadly sweet story . One nice touch is that it is NOT about a girl who bravely battles a fatal disease, so it avoids the usual cliches but still packs an emotional punch ( had me wiping my eyes a few times ) and will make you laugh out loud.

And the movie is splendid, too.

Good suggestion. I'll check it out.

KEEP WATCHING THE SKIES! (AMERICAN SCIENCE FICTION MOVIES OF THE FIFTIES) by Bill Warren

I've had this book for years and years, and it's a treasure.

I love science fiction, horror and fantasy, especially in the short form. So I read all of the "Year's Best" anthologies (Strahan, Guran, Horton, Datlow, Dozois, Adams). These keep me going for months.

I just finished "Was", by Geoff Ryman, and was knocked outta my mind. It's a fantasia based on themes and characters from "The Wizard of Oz", with detours into the lives of L. Frank Baum and Judy Garland. I immediately bought an anthology of his short fiction, "Paradise Tales", and burned through it in two days. I love this guy!

Next up is "Brain on Fire", by Susan Callahan.

"Of All the Gin Joints in the World" by Mark Bailey.

An amusing chronicle of some of Hollywood's most famous boozers (generally speaking: every star actor and director) - including the recipes of the drinks they savored and sketches of some of the places where they got wasted.

Also, I've been reading a lot of actor autobiographies lately: Robert Wagner, Tony Curtis, Roger Moore, James Garner, Ron Jeremy, Richard Chamberlain, et al). Some general observations from those:

- Steve McQueen was not an actor
- Charles Bronson was as unpleasant in real life as he was on screen
- Ray Milland was a nice fellow

In particular, the Wagner autobiography is a very smooth read:

EMPIRE OF THE SUMMER MOON - The Rise and Fall of the Comanche Nation

RECKLESS - My Life As A Pretender by Chrissie Hynde
This was a bit of a let down as i am a huge Pretenders fan, Hynde was basically a groupie/stoner until her mid20's when the Pretenders seemed to form out of nowhwere. And the original lineup only lasted two albums which is where the book ends (yeah, nuthin' about LIVING DAYLIGHTS frown)

On a personal note this book was a bittersweet read. Hynde mentions underground artist S. CLay Wilson numerous times. Wilson, who created the infamous x-rated Checkered Demon was a long-time friend and drinking buddy of mine. I found myself wishing i could tell him about all the mentions in the book but that is no longer possible frown

Just received Mr. Mike: the Life and Work of Michael O'Donoghue. This was a library discard (from the Oceanside Library of NY) but it's a valued treasure in my personal library. In the lead up to my purchasing this book I must have found at least twenty online retrospective articles on Michael O'Donoghue. He'll never be a popular or well-known (or well liked) figure, but to me he remains a fascinating creative individual.

The book even goes into detail about the legendary SNL season one "Star Trek" sketch (which O'Donoghue wrote), with Belushi as Kirk and Chevy Chase as Mr. Spock.

In the mood for some Robert E. Howard. This volume has a great assortment of Conan, Kull, Solomon Kane, crusades stories, and more. The companion volume that was published is great as well.

I really enjoyed Wool and am now into Shift by Hugh Howey. Not as deeply sucked into Shift but that's prequels for ya.

I've also been reading The Seven Power Questions a fantastic book on the best strategies to use questions to the fullest in all areas of life. Also enjoying 48 Elements of Power a guide to navigating the halls of power and avoiding people taking advantage of you.

SPQR by Mary Beard

A couple of weeks ago I re-watched the "Rome" and "I,Claudius" mini-series, both of which I have long considered excellent in their historical detail. When "SPQR" hit the best-seller charts recently it was a natural to fit it into the era. I enjoyed the book, which cleared up some misconceptions about the times, however, it did seem to drag somewhat near the end. Recommended to all who have interest in the rise and fall of Rome.

I just finished High Rise by JG Ballard. It was decent but I found it a hard slog towards the end if what is a relatively short book. The film coming out soon will have to do a lot to make it watchable, as every character is horrible.

Live From New York: An Uncensored History of Saturday Night Live

After finishing the superb Michael O'Donoghue biography, I've continued my SNL history exploration with this. I'm already 100+ pages in and am learning a lot about the way the original cast---let's just say that Dan Aykroyd "got around" more than Fred Garvin. Once the book reaches the mid '90s era, I'll be less interested since that was when I stopped watching). This is an earlier (2002) edition of the book. Good stuff.
