Ok, got it this morning, just four days after I ordered it -- super service from Intrada!

Haven't listened to it yet, but will in a couple hours. Now, you know what's going to happen next? I'm going to want to see the movie in order to know what the music underscores. But I see from my Maltin Guide and other sources that the film is only average, which is not surprising for a Disney movie from that era. I've never even seen the movie pop up on satellite or cable.

Rory. Please check back with your impressions. This thread inspired me to revisit the score after some time and it still knocks my socks off. But be warned, the movie doesn't live up to the score (although it isn't a bad flick). Goldsmith paints such a grand canvas, especially for the balloon flight scenes, that whatever images you have in your head after listening to the music will be promptly ruined by what is actually on film.

I've already looked on Amazon Prime if the movie can be streamed in HD -- and it can, for $3.99. But on your advice, I'm going to hold off.

So far, I've only had time to listen to the first few tracks in my car as I went to work. Hearing CAPRICORN ONE-like stuff in some of it. But I'll give it a proper listen when I get home.

I am sad that this one is going away. It's one of my personal top 10 Goldsmith's of all time, soaring and gorgeous but dark and edgy too. One of his best. I am surprised that it's going OOP given the majesty of the music.

Mine just arrived. I had been meaning to order this and never got around to doing so because of so many other good releases. I had listened to a cue on Youtube and decided I should get it, but that was a few years ago when it came out.

I just listened to it this morning. W O W. I am nearly speechless. This is rock solid late 70s/early 80s Goldsmith. I hear things that are in the flavor of "The Blue Max", "Capricorn One", "Star Trek: TMP", "Outland," and "Poltergeist" with a dash of "Medicine Man"... at times brutal, and at other times overwhelmingly beautiful.

WOW. WOW. WOW.

I agree. Very glad I finally got around to getting this, which because I've never bothered with the movie, was completely ignorant of.

A must-have for Goldsmith completists.

Interesting. When I started amassing soundtracks in significant numbers, I usually bought them "blind" so to speak, especially with anything Goldsmith. Since those were the days before YouTube, the internet, sound samples, one could be genuinely surprised (and more often than not, delighted). I remember how thrilling Night Crossing sounded to my (un-jaded) ears way back when I first received the first edition of this score.

Still thrilling BTW.

Same here generally, though in case of NIGHT CROSSING, I remember seeing the movie first (on TV) without any possible access to the soundtrack (LP back then). Regardless, the score sounded thrilling to my (un-jaded) ears way back. :-)

Just being realistic. I'd like to be a Goldsmith completist, but I doubt I'll ever be. There's still music of his I've never heard, and I'm actually OK with that.

I have been *thoroughly* enjoying this since ordering it at the last minute when Intrada announced it would be disappearing.

QUESTION: In "First Flight", starting around the 4:20 mark until 4:45, there are a series of four dramatic "WHOOOSING" sounds that float over the music, which are incredibly dramatic. Can someone tell me what they did to produce that sound? Thanks in advance!

Goldsmith also made prominent use of this sound in THE BLUE MAX. It's produced by a specialized instrument called a wind machine (a.k.a. aeoliphone). You can read more about it here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wind_machine

Wedge, thanks! I really appreciate it. Honestly, I thought it almost sounded like pulling open a set of cloth drapes from across a door wall, if you pull them fast enough sometimes they make a soft "whoosh" sound. I love the sound, but it was starting to bother me each time I heard it!

I've noticed the similar/same sound in The Blue Max (both the LLL release and Tadlow new performance). I thought I had read somewhere that in The Blue Max that there was a portion where Goldsmith had some brass players remove the mouthpieces from their instruments and just blow through the mouthpiece, although I can't imagine it would make a sound as great as that dramatic whoosh sound from the aeoliphone.

Thanks again!

As much as I love Goldsmith, didn't find anything in the samples that I wanted to hear again, which was disappointing.

Yes, Ron Hardcastle's honesty and tough love ARE missed.

Boy, Doug Fake and Roger Feigelson, am I glad you guys kept this one available until the last possible moment. What a thrilling score!

In the middle of a ripping frenzy, I started with Capricorn One and moved on to Night Crossing, of which I'd never heard a single note before. I only bought the disc because it was going out of print again, and I wanted a new chunk 'o Jerry for the portable player, so I included this.

Smashing sound and performance.

+1

I completely agree! This is a fantastic work, one of Goldsmith's lesser-known greats.
