Glad to see that this thread is still alive, thanks guys! My faves are still the older, jazz-flavored tracks from the 60's & 70's. Two each of my all-time faves are on Fan Albums Vol 1 & 2 as bonus tracks on Itunes. I have all the others on the fan albums and Autumn Thunder, but I'm balking at forking over $16 for 4 songs. Ah, well...

Is there any chance that "Up She Rises" and "The Lineman" might be called something else on the Autumn Thunder set? It doesn't change my mind one bit to have gotten 10 discs for something like 1/5 the cost, but I do need to know what else (other than The Power and the Glory) that I'll need to buy subsequently.

Yes, both pieces are included in the set with different names. "Up She Rises" is "The Golden Boy", but I can't remember what "The Lineman" now stands for. In any case, I am certain these are included in the set.

That track is found in the Autumn Thunder set on Volume 3, Track 11, known as The Mob. It was used often to great effect on some Spongebob episodes and can be found on Youtube. Hope this helps.
When i was young i looked forward to the Saturday evenings when This Week in the NFL was on, not just for the visual highlight but all that fine music as well, so too with the NFL game of the week. Fond memories, this also was the roots of my interest and aprecation of film music. Funny though i don't think my father a sports fanatic ever even notice all that music.

Dan, thanks for sharing, my experience is very similar. I only wish that more of Mr. Spence's work was available. There are still some that I have had rattling around in my head for some 40 years now but I have not been able to locate.

Alex Thanks! I was very happy to see the liner book with the comparison table. For the record, it's "Forearm Shiver", disc one, track seventeen. I think I've made it through three discs so far; at this point, I'm starting to wonder about taking a look at Our Man in Munich.
Whether I can place a specific track with a specific use is almost irrelevant---you can just about put together a mental reel just by title and perhaps a bit of knowledge on NFL Films' style. Now, if I could find the Ron Jones TNG set for the same price!
I have loved Spence for as long as i have been hooked on NFL films . I was pleasantly surprised but equally disappointed when Autumn Thunder was released . This , because while most of the signature pieces are there , some really great moments were missing . I later learned that a lot of the music in the 70's and 80's feature films were not Spence but a collection of composers housed in the KPM library . Since , I have bought these a song at a time . Does anyone know who composed / performed the piece of music from the superbowl x film that plays during the incident involving kicker Roy Gerella , Cliff Harris & Jack Lambert ?
I got the colossal 10CD "Autumn Thunder" collection as a gift for christmas and I was blown away with Sam Spence's music. If I had to sum it up in one word, it'd be: EPIC. I grew up watching many NFL films documentaries so you can call me biased, but I never knew Spence was such an accomplished musician. Not only did he study with Arthur Honegger - upon listening to the music one can hear how masterfully he handles the fugal treatment in his melodies, the power that breathes out of his percussion and brass sections. All in all, an important composer that completely changed the way we see sports. He gave football an epic quality - the "modern gladiators" owe this nickname to Sam Spence's epic music.
Thankfully, FSM dedicated one of its print issues to this wonderful musical legacy. Any takers?

Steve Sabol last I heard was battling cancer, hopefully he's winning the fight but you don't hear much from him lately. Best to him and his family. Steve and his father Ed were pioneers in preserving the history and mystique of the NFL.
This was a fun thread. Unfortunately most of the You Tube links have now been lost over time but there are a few that remain. It's still interesting to read through it. Quite a few regulars here on the board had something to say. Everytime this thread is brought back it gets a fair amount of views so I gather there is still some interest.
A lot of the Spence music and some newer compositions by Robidoux are now available fairly cheaply to pick and choose as downloads, but I still like having the Autumn Thunder cd set on the shelf. Except for the cardboard sleeves that hold the discs it was very well done including the informative oversized book. A nice set.
Sorry to hear about Steve Sabol, & if you haven't heard of him, the important thing to know is that he fully committed himself to something he loved, and he was duly rewarded for his endeavors.
Spence is classic. I wish I could see his & TWIB music w the original clips that I saw when I was young in the 70s. Most of the YouTube vids are dead bc NFL & MLB are very protective of their content. I did an arrangement for Roundup before I even drove.
Jet Set is definitely 70s cool, but Gathering Crowds is the one. I did this one when i was very young also - maybe when I was 11 or 12. He's changing keys around the circle of 5ths, and that's why boys like it (so, down a 5th w every change). This wiki page credits someone else w the music, & this has been a source of confusion for me since I was young. I had some info from a library in London when i was living there, but it doesn't match this post or the wiki below. Bizarro.
I bought this collection years ago but never played it. Started on disc 10 and WOW! Epic stuff! What was this going for on initial release? It's priced at $80 to $120 dollars on Amazon. I know I didn't pay anything like that for my set.
