Come now, Schiffy, don't act completely baffled by that comment. While I do think that it is somewhat of a leap at this early stage of the game to make that assumption, it is also easy enough to infer from Abram's comments that he wanted Giacchino but was not given the choice by the higher powers that be.

..And once Abrams was done asking Giacchino to score Episode 7, Giacchino would have slapped him across the face and told him to go hire John Williams.

I think it was a mistake on my part to give much weight to public statements. His initial comments invited the inference that Williams was on board for technical reasons of having "been there first." Later comments by Abrams advanced the theory that Williams is a "God" and not actually a human being. I'm being facetious but there are so many agendas and egos involved that these things have to be taken with a grain of salt. He may have wanted Giacchino or he may have only wanted to not seem disloyal to Giacchino by seeming to spike the football in Giacchino's face with the news that Williams would be scoring his film.

Having said that - though Hollywood is a director's medium, in the case of Star Wars I think as previously mentioned, a lot of these things went above Abrams. Williams was not only on board but seemed to be part of the Disney public relations strategy. There was the video early on of Williams confirming his involvement and giving an endorsement of sorts to Abrams. And that kind of thing continued throughout. The film felt kind of safe in a Disney-is-behind-the-curtains-kind-of-way also.

Does anybody have the chronological order for the OST? Forgive me if this has been posted already. You could just direct my attention there if it has been, but I'm not combing through 167 pages to find it. smile

I think it's already in chronological order on the disc.

I still can't get into this score. I've listened to it 43 times (thanks iTunes). I've tried listening to it intently and also while doing other things. Kev McGann's love of it made me go back and relisten to specific parts. And I know people have mentioned the Steps bit being a favourite. But I just can't break it. I forget what I'm listening to half the time until an old theme pops up. I remember it being pleasant enough in the film but the second I step away from the score I can't remember any of it. Though Rey's theme is sticking a touch now. Maybe one day it'll do something for me. McGann won't be happy with me. Tsk.

This spreadsheet prepared by Jason LeBlanc should answer all of your questions:

Leave it for a year and go back with new ears. You might be surprised.

43 times?! Bloody hell, I'd be hard pushed to listen to a score I do like 43 times!

(I've only listened to it twice so far!)

You know, I just don't care for this one either. Although there are some dynamite cues, the only one that's really outstanding for me is "The Jedi Steps And Finale"... both for the incidental scoring, and for the amazing medley during the End Credits.

Other cues are solid ("Rey's Theme", "Farewell And The Trip" and "The Starkiller" et al), but the action music is all kind of a let down, honestly. I think the prequel scores all have much more memorable and exciting action music than "The Falcon" and "Follow Me" do. The new themes for the Resistance, for Kylo Ren, and for Finn and Poe Dameron are all just sort of "present" for me, and there isn't much of an emotional punch to the score overall.

So I don't know... I think Episodes I-III are worthy additions to the Star Wars song book, but this one sort of leaves me flat.

Search your feelings... you know this to be "kinda mediocre."

Don't let your love of Star Wars or your admiration for John Williams prevent you from giving this score a fair evaluation.

Honestly, while it ain't the first three (4-6), I do enjoy it much more than the prequel scores.
I wonder how much of that is down to my enjoying the JJ film way more than the JarJar ones.

This was my feeling as well. The "suite" cues like the end credits or Rey's Theme shine brightly, but the underscore in most of the other cues isn't anything memorable (at least for Star Wars).

I still get the feeling that a lot of this was ghostwritten. Again, just a feeling, not going on record as a conspiracy or belief here.
