GOD ONLY KNOWS (2009)
An adopted Jewish Police Detective (Will Smith) is challenged with a crisis of faith, as he is not permitted by his community to hunt for the serial killer who preys upon his victims on the Sabbath. Mandy Patinkin, Rachel Weisz, Jeffrey Tambor, Lili Taylor, Steven Hill, Frank Langella, and Jeff Bridges as "Mitch"

In an interesting stretch, imagine Robert Conrad having a short cameo as Smith's elderly adoptive father.

I can only imagine the on-set tension.

Now that you've mentioned it, yeah.

My What Could Have Been, But Never Was* tribute to the late Sir Roger Moore. Rest in peace, "Prime Minister Simon Hopeworthy":

HELL INTO BELFAST (1973)
Directed by Michael Winner.
When a British prime minister's family is murdered by the IRA, he resigns and reassembles his middle-aged WWII commando buddies for a bloody vendetta of vengeance. Roger Moore; Richard Attenborough; Susannah York; Ken Hutchison; Malcolm McDowell; Ian Hendry; and Edward Woodward as "Hatcher."

*Thank God.

I remember that one. Thank God Sir Roger turned it down. The role eventually went to Peter Wyngarde. There was a harrowing scene where the very young Kenneth Branagh was blown to smithereens by a terrorist shoe-bomb. Wyngarde was traumatised by that, as he'd paid the boy to sell papers outside the shoe-shop that was a cover for terrorist activity. The celebrated chase scene when Hatcher spotted the bookie with one shoe running down the alley was actually filmed in a real black cab.

Roy Budd's title music was replaced by an ironic treatment of Percy French's 'Come Home, Paddy Reilly' playing from an on-scene cassette recorder as the terrorist wrapped Semtex in silver foil to look like Cadbury's Fruit & Nut.

Wow, this film--and your post, William--just keeps on giving. More timely prescience.

“Sam the Clam”
The touching story of Sam (an oyster, actually) that lived in the Western Interior Seaway during the Cretaceous Period and how he and his friends lived in harmony and love until the sea level receded, bringing about their demise.
He couldn’t have known that only about 80 million years later a relatively new and reckless species - homo sapiens, would bring about the melting of the polar ice caps and destroy themselves with global warming and rising sea levels.
In a surprising twist, Sam’s descendants, dwelling in the newly restored Seaway discover fossils that confirm that they are actually back “home”.
The film was shelved when early screenings proved troubling to young children with its themes of death and raising unanswered questions about where sea levels are supposed to be.

The Trouble With Undocumented Tribbles

After Jones caused an uproar with his introduction of Tribbles and the difficulties they caused, legislation was enacted which required inoculations, registration, birth restrictions, etc. and caused a dramatic increase in the cost of importing them, which was passed on to buyers thus reducing demand and profits.
Jones found an end around and began importing and selling cheap undocumented Tribbles and business boomed once again. Trouble soon arose upon discovery of Jones’ work and tensions mounted as the crew of the ship divided into two camps: the Red Shirts were alarmed and protested the undocumented Tribbles, citing the threat of disease and lack of population control, especially when the documented Tribbles began dying suddenly, much as in the previous Tribbles episode. The Blue Shirts claimed that importing them was humane and considered them refugees from hostile environs. And, as before a frustrated Kirk found a Tribble in his chicken sandwich and “caffee”.
Just when it looked as if civil war would break out aboard the ship, it was discovered that yet again the quadrotriticale wheat/rye had been poisoned, this time with a different, previously unknown pathogen. As it turned out, the undocumented Tribbles had genetic immunity to the toxin and they found sudden favor among all the crew, with reservations of course, as "Bones" could use them for stem cell research and not only immunize the documented Tribbles but the quadrotriticale as well. Yet again, for his misdeeds, Jones was made to do all the inoculations, registration and cleanup.
Turned out, they “…were no Tribble at all!”

big grin
