It's mind numbing to me that actors do this kind of stuff. It's clearly prostitution!

I just watched "While Your Were Sleeping", which had in your face production placements for Oreo Cookies and Duncan Donuts. I didn't mind the Oreo placement so much but jesus did the camera linger on the Duncan Donuts logo for a looooong time!

At least they have the "excuse" of being paid employees of the shows. The marks who unquestioningly allow themselves to absorb the product "message" have none, except maybe they just like commercials...I mean "messages."

I do seriously wonder. Do they get paid extra for the endorsements? (even if in character) It is outside the scope of their regular work. Plenty of actors endorse products in actual commercials and I assume get paid every time the commercial airs.

Perhaps it's part of the production and script?

IIRC, there are ads of Andy Griffith and Don Knotts in character as Andy Taylor and Barney Fife smoking cigarettes. These ads played within the air time of the episode proper but not as part of the *actual show*, like the Five-0 ad does.

I doubt Fred and Barney got paid; they genuinely loved smoking. wink

Love how the Winston sign glows benevolently above the Bedrock skyline at the end there.

Well they reached a new low! Sometimes television shows have special mini behind the scenes featurettes between commercial breaks. For an example Doctor Who on BBC America has "Inside Doctor Who".

Gotham had the same thing last night. Except the spot was really an excuse for the Penguin actor to pitch a car manufacturer! INFKY!

I know some of you people don't read whole threads, so here is that Hawaii Five-0 episode with the egregious product placement:

No way Jim....that has to be an ad featuring the actors...surely.

There's no way a writer would cram that much advertising BS into an episode of a TV show. Surely. Is there??

Sorry, bruddah (that's what they used to say on the real Hawaii Five-0). It's smack dab in the middle of de episode:

Thankfully, we live in a world where egregious product placement isn't just accepted, it's encouraged--by the viewer.

Deja Vu (2006)

Diet Pepsi can artfully positioned on desk while camera ostensibly lingers on something else, but the product is what stands out and not because I'm looking for it.

Icy Hot is seen and then the product name is spoken by one of the characters in an attempt at a joke.

Putrid movie, by the way. Cheers to Denzel Washington for fooling so many into thinking he's the shit, though.

Silver Linings Playbook- A two hour pep rally for the Eagles Football team franchise.

It is based on a book and the team is also referenced there so what would you have the filmmakers do, create a fake team?

Was MONEYBALL an ad for the Oakland A's? Was THE SOCIAL NETWORK a commercial for FACEBOOK?

Mickey (Jon Voight) come into the house and announces "I bought some speaker wire from Radio Shack" and then, of course, puts the shopping bag with the RS logo emblazoned on the counter.
same show: Chopper bikes and Mereceds benz cars

Showtime seems to be the worst offender!

Season two of this "guitly pleasure" brings us yet more epps!

worst offense: Donovan's wife goes into the bathroom to have a cigarette.
The only reason she does this is to sneak a blatant promo for a brand of cigs.
This is a major no-no in the USA where cig adverts are highly regulated (and banned from tele)
second worst: the son needs a ride and employs UBER
yuk!

Showtime's EPISODES also continues is shameful plugs for a cars : JAGUAR * ALFA ROMEO amongst others

I don't get the beef with this show? The series uses REAL brand names because the people in the show live in a place where brands matter [LA]. Of course Ray drives a Benz, of course his wife wears Jimmy Chos and Ray's suits are Zegna.

I don't get why using REAL brand names in the same way that everyone does in conversation is seen as egregious product placement. Don't get me wrong, I do hate it when the dialogue turns into a PITCH or a not so clever commercial but if someone says "Let's go to Outback" or "Get me a Grey Goose on the rocks" I don't see that as anything to suddenly get pulled out of the show/film.

I actually HATE when they do the opposite and create FAKE places like in the show REAPER where they have the BUILDER'S BENCH to be a Home Depot.

That's what they used to do. Regardless if "its in the book", it's still a two hour commercial for the team.

My question is on the more practical side. Does product placement in movies actually help sell products? Because if one lived in the movie world, 90% of people own a Mac. It hasn't in any way affected the sale of Mac computers in the real world. Not one bit that I can tell. Apple owns the world because of their mobile market. Mac computer's share of the market is still dismal.

Personally I believe these corporations are being played for fools, getting them to spend big money to have their product in a movie that actually nets them no benefit.

My question is on the more practical side. Does product placement in movies actually help sell products?

Sales of Reese's Pieces went through the roof after they were prominently featured in E.T., so yes, in the right movie, they can move products. See how Bollinger champagne has been "the official champagne of James Bond 007" since the late 80's.

So then if your perfect film world, you want EVERYTHING to be made up so that NO ONE and NOTHING could be misinterpreted as product placement?

Should they also make up FAKE cities and use made up cars too?

To Bruce, I get it, you don't like the show. I do. We can agree to disagree. I personally find that Subway add in Hawaii 5-0 to be pretty fucking awful but I don't exactly get thrown out of the movie SKYFALL because in the opening scene when see a laptop, it's a SONY VAIO.

Also Bruce, did you boycott ENTOURAGE, SEX IN THE CITY, and SILICON VALLEY all because they take places in REAL life where people drop names of brands, places, and products?

Did you not watch COCO BEFORE CHANEL, THE DEVIL'S WEARS PRADA, or AMERICAN GIGOLO all because these moves worked in clothing as a charecter trait of their protagonist?

Why are you calling me Bruce? Anyway the football thing isn't all that bad since it was part of the story. But where do you draw the line? There are and continues to be much much worse instances of egregious product placement. A Dog Named Winn Dixie, are you freaking kidding me? Be honest there's now a merging of fictional entertainment and advertising. A line has been crossed and it's not a good one.
