One of the beautiful benefits of a Radical Sabbatical from the creative/artistic enterprises the past twenty or so years is, when one Returns, there’s a wonderful array of new talent that’s infused the various industries with a titled talent impossible to ignore and right intriquing to envision observing let alone possibly collaborating with (as well as providing the pivotal inspiration to complete a play we aim to see him top-line after its Amurrican premiere). So when we first laid eyes on Colin Salmon in “Tomorrow Never Dies”, we were immediately impressed by his presence, his tangible intelligence and the subtle assurance he emanated that allowed him not to disappear or be overshadowed with the equally considerable screen charismas of his co-stars. As Charles Robinson, he fit in fabulously with the new Moneypenny as well as holding his own supporting stint vis-à-vis M & 007. Evidently, Mr. Salmon had been of more invaluable service behind-the-scenes as well since he was instrumental in playing the part of Bond whilst auditioning prospective actresses throughout his four-film Brosnan tenure … specifically so in “Die Another Day” (as the insightful commentaries on the DVD attest) when he helped Rosamund Pike on her screen test land the role of Miranda Frost. Mind yu, on Mr. Brosnan’s commentary track, he reflects about the possibility of his having to pass the Bond-ing Aston-Martin eventually – definitely not as quickly or in the manner that it happened, no doubt – and spontaneously offered up Mr. Salmon’s name high on his preferred list of recommendations. Alas, such a colorful choice will never take place this side of either the matrix or the Bond-Bizarro world combined but still … He’d’a had OUR vote without a second (let alone third) thot …
