Well I've had this for a couple days and gave it a few listens and it reminded me how much I really don't like this score. It's very synth oriented and not very Christmas sounding in my opinion. I admit I've never been a big Jarre fan and this probably ranks as one of my least favorite Christmas scores ever. Take a listen to Silvestri's Christmas Carol, then turn this on and you're in a huge disappointment. I always thought the movie was good, but the score was totally wrong for it and lacks the holiday spirit it was needing. This is all just my opinion, but I don't see myself revisiting this one very much this year...I'll make a quick little montage of my favorite parts, but it's not a lot unfortunately...
Maurice Jarre was a composer different of the others, never expect of him similar things the other composers, he had a very different way to compose his scores, I think the score has connection with the christmas seasons but is just a different way to show it.
I do not want to compare with A Christmas Carol, each one is interesting in your style, but here some guys don't understand the music of Jarre, I already read some guys here in this forum talking bad about Lawrence Of Arabia which is admittedly a masterpiece, so imagine about Prancer that is a more modest work.
If you already know you do not like the composer's why insist on buying and getting every time hitting the same key?
Each composer and work has his public and end of story.
I bought it trying to give the score a chance. Just because I'm not a 'fan" of the composer's work doesn't mean there aren't some scores where they hit it out of the park and come up with something great. I actually like the score to Lawrence of Arabia by Jarre, but IMHO Prancer was just a miss for me. To each his own...

Re: I'll bite - it's a gorgeous album & not overly Christmas y which I dont like either. Silvestris Carol IS over Christmas like & a crashing hyperactive bore, that I had forgotten before it was over....and I DO love Silvestri.
The Prancer synths arent overdone, more ambient in nature, with EWI in the lead role, carrying the melody lines. If you don't like that sound you won't like this.
Personally I cant recommend this album highly enough. Its a beautiful, well rounded & concise listening experience - no banging action cues, depressing sludgy brickwalled sound. Since Jarre is mostly hated for whatever reason around here, you'll mostly get that, so....watch the film, try the samples, take a chance. I played it 3 times in a row when I got it this week & know I won't tire of it ever.
GoblinScore: Well, when someone has been at this site for 9 1/2 years and has told us nothing about himself except that he's male, I get a little nervous taking his word about something I'm about to spend money on. But what you wrote above seems quite sensible to me, and I DO love Maurice Jarre and keep about 8 hours of his music in my Jarre favorites playlist, so I'm going to take your word for it and buy it. Unfortunately I went ahead and finalized that order, but will try to remember it the next time I place an order at Intrada (although yesterday's order was at SAE). Thanks!!!

See!!! THAT's why I kept trying to get some reaction from people who had listened to it (and were maybe NOT Jarre-haters!). But I DO appreciate the comments from those for whom it simply wasn't their cup of tea. Thanks, everyone!!!

As much as I appreciate a 'Christmassy' approach, the composer's low key scoring works just as beautifully here.

The irony is that most of the time I dislike Facebook. I only got on it because I had written this fellow who made this dazzling documentary about his life and I wanted to share some info with him and wanted him to know who was writing him. But then it was as if FB had accessed my address book and told all of the people on it that I was now on FB, and every time I turned around FB was sending me email to tell me that so and so was a friend of a friend or so and so has posted a new photo or so and so has revised their profile or … or … or …. I've felt 200 times more connected to some of the people here than most of them on FB (with the exception of an occasional pompous member who feels he knows more than everyone else). Frankly, I prefer connecting with people (1) in person, (2) by phone, (3) by email -- in that order -- with FB near the bottom! Thanks for writing.

Well, I just ordered it from SAE, but asked them to make sure I hadn't already ordered it, since some of my orders from them end up on backorder and after a time I forget that I've placed them. In this case, checking old email to make sure I hadn't already ordered "Prancer," I discovered, to my surprise, that I had already ordered "Marathon Man/Parallax View," which I was about to RE-order. Between Intrada and La-La-Land and Kritzerland and Amazon and other vendors, it's sometimes hard to remember if I've actually ordered something or just PLANNED to order it! Think I better write these orders down on a legal pad and keep it handy! Back to school!
