Number one film of the year and perhaps ever is Masaki Kobayashi's devastating three-volume The Human Condition.

My 5 favourite films of 1959, not including the obvious out-of-competition status for
Hitchcock's NORTH BY NORTHWEST and Hawks' RIO BRAVO are :

THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK
IMITATION OF LIFE
LE SIGNE DU LION
SOME LIKE IT HOT
THE WONDERFUL COUNTRY

(From 1949 to 1962 any Ozu's movie, with the exception of the unseen MUNEKATA KYÔDAI, would make my 5-titles lists. Because they are all like exquisite variations to each others, with the exception of OHAYÔ, I consider them as a one-and-single outstanding piece of achievement.)

Number one film of the year and perhaps ever is Masaki Kobayashi's devastating three-volume The Human Condition.

Would have entered my top-five list but third and last chapter is 1961.

One of my all-time favourite movies.
