I received mine yesterday, and while it looks and sounds pretty good, the black and white images didn't have the clarity I expected from Criterion, and I noticed something eerie in the facial flesh tones: a sort of (distracting) sparkle, kind of like when Edward takes Bella up beyond the clouds to show how his vampire skin glitters in the sunlight in "Twilight." It's nothing I've ever noticed before in the hundreds of Blu-rays I've bought. Incidentally, I much prefer the updated 5.1 audio, which really enhances Leonard Bernstein's great score. But about those glittering flesh tones….

Which version did you watch, Ron? There are three different presentations of the movie. Same cut, but different framing on those three versions. I preferred the 1.33:1 full frame version.
The extras on the program have a featurette about the different projection/matting issues on the film.

Well, I put the first disc back in and, instead of choosing to resume, went back to the menu and tried repeatedly to choose, under AUDIO, the 5.1, but it seemed to keep offering me either MONAURAL or COMMENTARY. After several attempts I at least got the widescreen version with monaural audio (from disc 1), and the images were just the same as yesterday, with the glittering faces and other glittering in some of the lighter tones, although not in white shirts. I went to disc 2 and chose the one you mentioned, but, again, had the glittering I wrote about above (don't know what I was doing wrong to NOT be able to get the 5.1 audio -- will have to try again next time). I have SO many Blu-rays, and this is the first time I've ever seen anything like this, and when I've played other Blu-rays (after the problem) it doesn't happen. Very odd. Thanks for trying.

I'm not too comfortable with Criterion offering three different aspect ratios to choose from when the intended ratio was 1.85. I dislike it when alternative and incorrect ratios are made available on DVDs/Blu-Rays. (Such as the dreaded "full screen version" for a 2.35 film.)
Ron, I haven't seen the Criterion Blu-Ray of "Waterfront," but I have seen their DVD - and I compared the picture quality with the DVD that came with the Kazan box set, and noticed nothing amiss.

RP: Damn! Just yesterday I loaned my secondary Blu-ray player to my neighbor, along with a handful of discs, trying to get him to upgrade, and no one I know nearby has the format. But good suggestion, and I'll do that as soon as I get my Samsung back. Thank you.

pp: Well, I'm actually glad to hear that. I may be getting some sort of interference, although I've never experienced such a problem before, and, as I've often noted, I have over 4,000 DVDs and nearly 200 Blu-rays, and it's nothing I've ever noticed before on any of them. Will look forward to getting my secondary Blu-ray player back so I can try "On The Waterfront" with it. And it might just go away on its own. Incidentally, I keep a large area open behind my wall of components so I can get back there to easily change wiring, and I must say that it's a jungle of wires from all the components and speakers and U-verse, HDMI, and optical cables and more, so maybe I am getting interference from some crossed wires. Thank you.

Update. My neighbor returned my secondary (Samsung) Blu-ray player and I immediately put on disc 1 of this set, and, as before, the lighter images, particularly with faces, had the same problems I detailed above. Maybe it's my TV, although I've had this 55-inch Samsung for a few years and have never encountered this with anything else, and I've watched several hundred DVDs and over a hundred Blu-rays with the same TV. Very odd. Obviously it's an isolated problem, since others who have "On The Waterfront" haven't encountered it.

pp: Probably a good suggestion about contacting Criterion. I have my Blu-ray players connected to the internet (with ethernet connections to my U-verse), so they get firmware updates as soon as they're available, so that shouldn't be a problem. I'll be happy when I can get to the bottom of this! Thanks.
