The Reign of Terror - Tortured by Robespierre

As much as I love Anthony Mann's work this is one I've never gotten around to. Looks like it's time to catch up!

My 5 favourite films of 1949, not including the obvious out-of-competition status for
    Vidor's THE FOUNTAINHEAD and
Cornelius' PASSPORT TO PIMLICO, are :

    GIVE US THIS DAY
    OCCUPE-TOI D'AMELIE
    THE PASSIONATE FRIENDS
    THIEVES' HIGHWAY
    WHISKY GALORE

(From 1949 to 1962 any Ozu's movie, with the exception of the unseen MUNEKATA KYÔDAI, would make my 5-titles lists. Because they are all like exquisite variations to each others, with the exception of OHAYÔ, I consider them as a one-and-single outstanding piece of achievement.)

This movie is a gem and you should wait for a proper restoration that would actually pay tribute to the outstanding (dark) work of John Alton.

One of my top-five favourite movies of Anthony Mann.

    OCCUPE-TOI D'AMELIE ! :

Best adaptation so far of a Feydeau's vaudeville play ! And by the way, keep in mind that vaudeville in french has not the same meaning it has in english ! wink
Directed by great Autant-Lara and performed by the delightful Danièle Darrieux. There's much talking but it's brilliant dialogue and it has also a wonderful dynamic and inventive narration that does not mix rhythm up with agitation.
