Is there an acceptable case made for this device (the latest model) that covers the screen with a hard shield, yet leaves the click wheel completely exposed, and is preferably rigid and clear? Or anything similar?

I have an iSkin Evo that does all those things, and it has proved pretty durable for the last year. The main chassis is metal, and the back is silicone, so it's good to grip, and it's a snug fit, so it does not bulk it up too much. Yet it leaves the charger slot and earphone hole open, each under a little flap.

Once it's on, it is not easy to get off, I have had to use a pen knife to carefully pry it all apart, but it is great protection and leaves the click wheel naked if you choose (I would recommend that). The only problem I have had is dog hair, somehow, inexplicably tends to get under the screen protector, between the iSkin window and the iPod screen, but I do tend to use my iPod mostly when I am walking my dog, so that may have something to do with it. Also, I did not select 'Pop Star Pink' as pictured at this link:

Oops, just noticed this link is for the 80gb version; but sniff around the iSkin website. It's worth it.

I have had the following case on my 160gb iPod since Feb. 2011 and the iPod looks brand new. This is a fabulous case that fits like a glove. The screen is covered but clearly viewed and the wheel is exposed.

Griffin Elan Form Hard-Shell Leather Case for 80/120/160 GB

I bought mine on Amazon and paid $25.00. I am sure you can still get it somewhere and I highly recommend.

No go on the iSkin website or Amazon. No go on the Griffin on Amazon. Apparently, there is no demand for iPod classic cases anymore.

On my previous iPod, I used an some sort of rubber case with a clear plastic screen cover. Never liked it, and when I took it off my iPod was all sticky/greasy underneath. My new one, which I've been using without incident for at least 4 years, I've never put in a case. It fits nicely into my earbud travel pouch thing so I store it in there when traveling, but when at home or in use it's just in my pocket or near me somewhere and has never suffered from the occasional fall.

Here you go, Jackal -- this is the one that I bought, same color, too:

I have been reading rumors for years that Apple was phasing out its iPod Classic, trying to get everyone to store all their portable music on their telephones. Steve Jobs denied this to the end of his life, but I guess the ancillary retailers have taken the rumors as fact. I love my old Classic.

Born,

I sent an email to your profile email with a current link to a mad low price for the Griffin Elan case. Check your spam. The subject is iPod Classic Case. The price is almost half what I paid. Good luck.

I just ordered the Griffin Elan from Amazon. Usually keep mine in a small hard cloth zippered case to protect it, but it's annoying to have to take it out to switch playlists or adjust the volume. Long had the 160GB Classic. Ran across the street to catch a bus a few months ago, and once the bus took off realized my iPod had popped out of my pocket, and by the time I raced back, some guys on bicycles had picked it up and run off with it. So I had to buy another. Only have 2GB of space available on it, so need to start weeding out music I never play -- who needs 4 different Mahler 4ths??? Have never cared for the earbuds and prefer compact over-the-ear headphones.

Does the iSkin EVO4 have feature a clear window over the iPod screen, or is it simply an open space?

I'm willing to use any case that is rigid/semi-rigid which you don't have to scratch or deface the stainless steel to get into the case, and which has a rigid clear window over the screen and an uncovered click wheel.

If the iSkin has a rigid window over the screen, its a lock.

It does. It's a clear, rigid little window, not a sticky film.

Did you get a case for your iPod? Just curious as to what you chose.

Received mine today, so it took only 4 or 5 days to arrive, and I chose the inexpensive Griffin Immerse 3-pack for only $5 (which included shipping), and can't understand why anyone has to trim it -- I can easily get all my Apple Classic inside and still move all the controls, including the wheel. Plus I have 2 more as spares. Looks like it'll be more protective than what I had been using.

Follow-Up: After using one the past week, today it was sometimes hard to move the wheel (through the plastic) to go through my list of 3126 albums, which is troubling.

Sorry to be dilatory, edwzoomom, but I'm forced to wait on some Christmas largess to get both the iPod and the case. It'll be a couple of weeks before I know how I'll protect the encapsulator of my musical heritage.

When I get the case, I'll let you know. Though I'll probably cruise a couple of high-end malls in Dallas to try and find an iPod Classic case before turning to an online source.

It won't be a Griffin Elan, though. That case looks as if you have to force the pod into the top of a woven-together case.

I'm looking for a silicone-back with hardshell front, or entirely hardshell case. Just as long as the screen is rigidly covered, though visible, and the click wheel is tightly bordered yet completely unobstructed, I'll be happy.
